THE REVIEW:

While many AFOL’s have grown up with LEGO KINGDOM and past incarnations of the popular LEGO medieval toys, I found myself wanting to give “LEGO CASTLE” a try!

While I have said I wanted to strictly focus on LEGO CITY, somehow my priorities have went astray during Black Friday and found myself purchasing the “LEGO CASTLE – FOREST AMBUSH” set.

But before we begin, let’s take a look at the LEGO minifigures included with this set.

Included are two King’s Knights (Silver and blue) and two Dragon soldiers (black and red) including a dog.

I love the various helmets as they are quite detailed all over.  There is also plenty of weapons that come with the minifigures, as the Knights have a spear and sword, while the Dragon soldiers have a mace and axe.

Each figure has printing on both sides and is very detailed, while the Dragon soldiers also have two types of facial express (front and back).  It would have been nice to see the Knight’s also have double printing on the heads but I’m quite content with their confident look.

As for the dog, it’s your usual tame brown LEGO dog.

The Knights have a wagon which dons their blue and gold flag, the King’s shield, while a chest is full of gold, goblets and other cool things that the Dragon soldiers definitely want in their possession.  While one is to guard, the other must pull, while the dog walks alongside with them.

It would have been nice to have one more Kings Knight as one can pull and you have two defenders.  Otherwise, one Knight pulling and only one armed, really…that’s one easy target.  Unless, their dog is trained at going after Dragon soldiers.

Meanwhile, the Dragon soldiers have all this weaponry including flick missles aimed at the King’s Knights.  As they hide behind a makeshift plant, with a swing with the axe, the cart is blocked and the Dragon soldiers have a clear shot to overtake the Kings Knights in battle.

So, they think?

As quick as the tree is cut down by a Dragon soldier, lil’ Kujo (which I somehow named the dog that way), goes after the soldier, giving one Knight the opportunity to fight and take the Dragon soldier down, while the dog sees its pray…but who will emerge victorious?

The Kings Knights + dog or the Dragon soldiers?

Suffice to say, despite the small size of this set, for the $8.00 I paid for it, with four minifigures, a dog and extra accessories plus extra parks, you are getting your money’s worth!  I really like the design of the minifigures, so much it entices me to purchase more of the LEGO CASTLE sets.

I like the outfits, the weaponry but also the imaginative accessories such as the chest/cart and the Dragon soldiers forest hideout.  I like how the tree falls down but also the hidden weaponry around the trees, while you get a lot of things to put inside the chest and extra parts that make this set worthwhile.

Overall, “LEGO CASTLE – Forest Ambush (70040)” is a fantastic, inexpensive set for under $12, especially if you can get it for under $8, that’s a steal!
