Coming off an award-winning final season of Samurai Jack, Adult Swim reunites with creator Genndy Tartakovsky on a new animated series. Primal features a caveman at the dawn of evolution. A dinosaur on the brink of extinction. Bonded by tragedy, this unlikely friendship becomes the only hope of survival in a violent, primordial world.
Russian-American animator Genndy Tartokovsky has been a Cartoon Network and Adult Swim ergular from working on animated series sucha s “Dexter’s Laboratory”, “Samurai Jack”, “Star Wars: Clone Wars”, “Sym-Bionic Titan” and most recently with “Primal”.
With the first season aired in two halves from 2019-2020, a second season is set to premiere sometime in 2021. But for now, for those who want to catch up on the series or those who have enjoyed “Primal” can now purchase it on Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
“Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal” revolves around a caveman, known as Spear. He goes out for fishing and comes in contact with a deadly Deinosuchus. While Spear survives, when he arrives back to his home area, he sees his mate and their children being devoured by horned tyrannosaurs.
Wanting to kill himself at first, he decides to get revenge for the death of his loved ones. When he encounters a hornless Tyrannosaurus (Fang), he sees her two offspring with her.
When he saves them, the offspring show their kindness towards Spear but then out of knowhere, a horned tyrannosaurus pack attacks them and while Spear and Fang kill two of them, the largest horned Tyrannosaurus devours Fang’s offspring.
While the two fight and kill the horned Tyrannosaurus, both Spear and Fang lost their offspring, leading to both to travel together and must learn to get along with each other.
The first season focuses on the relationship of Spear and Fang as they learn to travel together, work as a team than compete with each other for food.
While they confront many other dangerous monsters and beasts in the land.
The second season focuses more on a supernatural storyline as Spear and Fang must deal with dinosaurs with rabies, primitive human witches and coming across a female slave named Mira. Will a third person travel alongside with them?

“Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal – The Complete First Season” is presented in 1080p High Definition. Colors are vibrant and the animation features a colorful palette. I didn’t notice any artifacts or banding issues. Line art shows no jaggies and for the most part, looks crisp. “Primal” has a unique style and it works quite well with this series.
AUDIO & SUBTITLES:
“Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal – The Complete First Season” is presented in English DTS-HD Master Audio and English SDH subtitles. Music are crystal clear. Sound effects are well-utilized through the surround channels. It’s important to note that there is hardly any dialogue until near the end of the season but most of the dialogue is Spear screaming and Fang growling.

To be truthful, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first started watching “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal – The Complete First Season”.
An animated series with no dialogue but a lot of grunting and screaming or growling, you quickly learn that this action series about two exact opposites, through tragic circumstances, become comrades… a caveman and a Tyrannosaurus.
The first half focused on these two getting along as both travel together but have different needs. Spear wants to hunt for food, but Fang goes after everything including Spear’s kills.
For the most part, its how these two manage to work together in order to trust each other, to respect each other but also knowing that it’s them against what’s out there in the world.
And by the second half, you start to realize that this world that these two come across, comes with killer monkeys, killer witches and a person that can speak?
Needless to say, the way that these episodes are crafted and how the characters are able to tell a story through circumstances and actions is quite captivating. The art and animation is equally well-done!
And the series looks absolutely awesome in HD! Vibrant colors and the lossless soundtrack is quite immersive.
I enjoyed each episodes so far for the first season and I can’t wait for season two! That’s how captivated I was with this animated series. It was really addictive and quite awesome!
Overall, “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal – The Complete First Season” on Blu-ray is deserving of five stars! Highly recommended!
