Comedy superstar Adam Sandler is back – and funnier than ever- as The Zohan, the finest counter terrorist agent the Israeli army has.  That is, until he fakes his death and travels to Manhattan to live his dream…as a hairdresser.  Now this skilled fighting machine who used to clip bad guys is out to prove he can make the cut as a top stylist.  All goes silky smooth until his cover is blown when he’s recognized by a Palestinian cab driver (Rob Schneider).  Now the, Zohan must fight to live a peaceful new life in New York in this razor-sharp action-packed comedy from Adam Sandler, Robert Smigel, Judd Apatow and Dennis Dugan.

Is it possible for Adam Sandler to be even more over-the-top than his previous films and try to push the button?

“YOU DON’T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN” is a film that seems to be a mixture of the cool agent James Bond, the sexed-out foreigner “Borat” and a comedy that would try to spotlight on the political and cultural problems that exist between the Israeli’s and the Palestinians.

I know many critics were not too fond with the latest film by Adam Sandler and director Dennis Dugan.  The two worked great together in the 1996 film “Happy Gilmore” but for those familiar with Adam Sandler films, you just have to leave any seriousness and just see how over-the-top the Sandman will go to get some laughs.

Especially now, with these crazy economic times, sometimes you need a film that is not too serious and just over-the-top that will definitely make you laugh.

The film features Israeli counterterrorist agent known as Zohan “The Zohan” Dvir (played by Adam Sandler), a fighting machine that has the superspeed of the Flash, nearly invincible as Superman and literally a super warrior not afraid to take on the Palestinians.  But the Zohan has had enough of the fighting.

All he wants is to become a hairstylist, so after faking his own demise after battling his arch nemesis known as the Phantom, the Zohan leaves to America and does what he can to work his dream job.

But of course, he tries to keep his identity in the down low with a new hairstyle and a new name ala “Scrappy Coco”.  He even tells people he is half Australian and half Mt. Everest.  But he needs a job and he eventually is given some work at a salon owned by a Palestinian.

But aside from his super mad fighting skills, the Zohan is also a sex machine.  He overly well-endowed and doesn’t mind having sex with women (big and small, old and young).  I don’t even know how many times I’ve seen Adam Sandler’s ass throughout the film.

So, how to transcend from super agent to hairstylist?  How about serving his female hairstyle clients with more than just a haircut.

A definitely over-the-top comedy with several guest appearances from fellow Saturday Night Live comedians Chris Rock and Kevin Nealon, pop diva Mariah Carey, Dave Matthews, George Takei  and more!

But will he be able to keep his identity hidden from fellow Israeli’s or his enemies which include Rob Schneider as a Palestinian who was beaten and had his goat taken away from by the Zohan and now wants revenge.  And what happens when the Zohan finds out that he is not the only one who is in America but also his arch nemesis, the Phantom?

VIDEO:

The film is featured in 1:85:1 anamorphic widescreen and picture quality was mastered in High Definition.

AUDIO:

Audio is presented in English 5.1 (Dolby Digital) and French (Dolby Surround).  The film is strictly dialogue with a lot of 80s and modern music.  But there are some action screens where the audio does come quite strong through your speakers.  But mostly, the film is a dialogue and music driven film when it comes to audio.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The single disc and the 2-disc unrated extend version both come with commentary by Adam Sandler, Robert Smigel, Rob Schneider and Nick Swardson.

An interesting commentary with the guys giving their comedic thoughts on their film and asking each other who decided this joke and that joke.

Also, a second commentary by Director Dennis Dugan.  Also, deleted scenes and 10-behind-the-scenes featurettes which include:

  • Look Who Stopped By
  • Dugan: The Hands-On Director
  • The Stunts of Zohan
  • Dugan Espanol?
  • Zohan vs. Phantom
  • Shooting Baja for Tel Aviv
  • All American Redneck
  • From Guns to Scissors
  • The Robot
  • Laughing is Contagious

Featurettes that stayed in my mind was having to film the Meditteranean scenes in Tel Aviv and Baja but to hear from performers who were of Israeli, Palestinian and Arabian descent working together in the film and actually leaving the cultural disputes behind and learning about themselves and the people they had to work with.  That was quite interesting to watch.

A surprising featurette was “The Robot” which several scenes in the film featured a super-robot with human tendencies (he sneezes snot and has diarrhea problems).

The second disc in the unrated extended version comes with a digital copy of the film which include 5 behind-the-scenes featurettes such as “Zohan’s Doubles”, “News on 3: Missing Goat”, “News on 3: Who is the Zohan?”, “News on 3: It’s Very Good” and “Getting Stinky”.

Overall, “YOU DON’T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN” is a farcical comedy that literally enjoyed or hated it.  It’s not a serious film.  It’s a farcical film about a super agent that likes to show off his big package (and his naked behind) and looks at sex as a beautiful way to show respect for a woman (or women).

As for the DVD itself, it’s literally jam packed with special features and two comedies, so you get a lot.  Especially a lot of insight on the making of the film.

The film is definitely not meant to be taken seriously because there is ethnic stereotyping (ie. Israeli’s love hummis and willing to have hummis on everything including their candy and beverage), their love for bean bag involves practicing on Zohan’s friend’s pet cat and other areas that I can see people getting upset.

Also, it’s use of sex for gags, especially the Zohan and his ways of pleasuring women, may provide some gasps and definitely not an appropriate film to have the children nearby when playing.  There is no major nudity in the film, you do get butt shots but there is a lot of sexual innuendo. I mean.. a lot!

As for how I felt for the film?  I felt that there is an uneven pace as you have the first part featuring the Zohan trying to live out his hairstylist dreams in America and start to fall in love with his boss.  In fact, a lot of the fun parts of the film happened during the first half but suddenly, it starts to switch from comedy to action, and I found myself wanting to see more progression between Zohan and his beautiful boss (played by Emmanuelle Chriqui).

But alas, the film stays consistent in it’s wacky humor which works well at first but then it starts to get old as you get to the end of the film.

Nevertheless, this is a type of film where you leave your serious nature at the door.  You know that you will get a dose of humor that would either be very funny or ridiculously stupid, “YOU DON’T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN” has a bit of both.  But otherwise, whether a comedy film by Adam Sandler or even Will Ferrell, you know what to expect and you just sit back, eat your popcorn and enjoy!
