The sophomore EP “Purple” from Toronto-born Tristan Clopet features six upbeat tracks that feature a bit of rock, funk and most noticeably the singer’s smooth vocals. The 23-year old Clopet has achieved a large following on YouTube and looking on the comments, many people all over the world have fallen for the singer/songwriter/musician’s music.

Having checked out several of Tristan Clopet’s music videos especially clips of his live performances, their is no doubt that Clopet can sing and play the guitar.  It’s evident to any listener that he is a talented performer, so I was quite interested in hearing what kind of music Clopet would have on “Purple”.

Is he like another Jason Mraz, John Mayer or does Clopet stand out amongst the many young guitar-playing, singer/songwriters out there?  After listening to “Purple”, my answer is “yes!”.  Clopet is the real deal!

Clopet begins the EP with “Proximity Bomb”, a rock/funk track which is reminiscent of old school late ’80s Red Hot Chili Peppers with that singsong lyrical flow enforced by percussion, bass and electric guitar.

The second track “So Alive” showcases Clopet at his best.   Smooth vocals that channel into a wonderful chorus and showcasing his talent.  Definitely a magnificent track off the EP.  The third track “Superficiality is a Sin” is a track that I dig musically.  Loved the guitar playing for the track and overall a smooth track which I can tell would benefit more in a live setting.

The fourth track “Ethereal Evidence” sports a Duran Duran “Notorious” guitar riff and even a little “Killing in the Name” ala Rage Against the Machine.  While similar to “Proximity Bomb”, the track has that old school Red Hot Chili Peppers vibe but Clopet and band make it their own.  Overall, a pretty cool track.

The fifth track “Love and a Question” is definitely a solid and whimsical track that combines great vocals along with great music playing.   Very smooth and almost Mayer-like but Clopet does a fantastic job of singing this track.   Another fantastic track on the EP!

The final track on “Purple” is “Black Panther Party”, a pretty upbeat music driven track and another track that has that old school Red Hot Chili Peppers vibe.   Definitely solid bass and electric guitar playing and even dig the drums on this track.  Overall, another upbeat, rock track that I enjoyed on the EP!

Overall, “Purple” is an EP that showcases Tristan Clopet as a musician, songwriter but also as a vocalist.  I have to admit that before listening to this album, I was expecting a Jack Johnson/John Mayer-like sound but in a way, that would be quite boring and fortunately, Clopet makes his music his own and not following a certain style.  Granted, you can easily hear some influence from the Red Hot Chili Peppers in a few of Clopet’s songs but for the most part, he makes it his own.

If you are wondering why there is so much buzz about Tristan Clopet, definitely give “Purple” a try.    Featuring charismatic vocals, great music and overall an enjoyable, solid EP!  Definitely recommended!
