Find out in “The Super Hero Squad Show: The Infinity Gauntlet -  Season 2, Volume 4”! available on DVD from Shout Factory in August 2012!

With the popularity of Hasbro’s “Marvel Super Hero Squad” action figure line (featuring the popular Marvel superheroes in super-deformed style), an animated series was created as a comedic parody of the Marvel characters and various storylines that were popular in the comic book series.

Created for children, “The Super Hero Squad Show” debuted on the Cartoon Network in 2009 with the second season “The Infinity Gauntlet” airing on television in 2010-2011.

And now, the fourth volume of the second season will be available on DVD courtesy of Shout! Factory. The second season features special guest voice talents Ty Burrell (“Modern Family”), Jane Lynch (“Glee”), Michael Dorn (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”), James Marsters (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), Kevin Sorbo (“Hercules: The Legend Jouneys”) and Stan Lee.

In the second season of “The Super Hero Squad Show: The Infinite Gauntlet”, Thanos has taken the six infinity stones from Adam Warlock and now with this amazing power, can rule the world. As Dr. Doom and other villains including our heroes of the Super Hero Squad trying to beat Thanos to no avail., Thanos’s ego takes over and leaves him open to being outwitted by the Silver Surfer.

As the Silver Surfer is able to take away the Infinity stones/glove from Thanos, after slipping on the powerful glove, unfortunately the power transforms the Silver Surfer into the Dark Surfer and he becomes the villain.

And now, the Dark Surfer has caused chaos turning Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, Wolverine, Falcon and the Scarlet Witch into alternate dimensions and must take on new opponents of that world but now also turning them into toddlers.  Also, what happens when Mister Fantastic tries to help the Squad while Captain America takes on Baron Strucker and the evil Hydra, the Impossible Man showing up to cause more trouble and Captain Marvel takes on the Dark Surfer?

“The Super Hero Squad Show: The Infinity Gauntlet – Season 2, Volume 4” on DVD includes the following episodes:

  • EPISODE 47: Brouhaha at the World’s Bottom – As Baron Strucker and Hydra attack an outpost in the Save Land, Mister Fantastic and Ms. Marvel try to rescue the Squaddies.
  • EPISODE 48: Missing: Impossible! -The Impossible Man wants to hang out with the Squad.
  • EPISODE 49: Revenge of the Baby Sat! – Wolverine and the Hulk must take care of the Super Hero Squad who has turned into toddlers.
  • EPISODE 50: Soul Stone Picnic!– Captain Marvel vs. Dark Surfer.
  • EPISODE 51: When Strikes the Surfer!– The Dark Surfer intends to destroy the universe, meanwhile Dr. Doom has something up his sleeve.
  • EPISODE 52: The Final Battle! (‘Nuff Said!) – The Super Hero Squad takes on the Dark Surfer.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“The Super Hero Squad Show: The Infinity Gauntlet – Season 2, Volume 4” is a vibrant series in which the characters are presented in super-deformed format (shrunken down characters) and based on the popular Hasbro toy series. The character designs and the animation style is so unlike any other animated series in America that it’s not only refreshing but it’s also quite intriguing and fun.

The animation is well done and the series looks very good on DVD. This is one of those children’s animated series that even adults would wish it was on Blu-ray because it looks so good. The art backgrounds are wonderfully painted, characters are well-shaded and it’s just a colorful, vibrant animated series.

Audio is presented in Dolby Digital and there are closed-captions included.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“The Super Hero Squad Show: The Infinity Gauntlet -  Season 2, Volume 4” comes with the following special features:

  • Featuring “Super Heroes: What The..?!”: (1:23) A feature using stop motion via Marvel action figures.  Contains three “What The..?!” episodes:  It’s Coming, Secret (Pranh) Wars and Uncivil War.  NOTE: These special features may not be appropriate for children.

There is no denying that there is a charm to watching Marvel characters in super-deformed format.

Popular in Japan and are typically hilarious takes on characters, the creators of “The Super Hero Squad Show” really go all out in making a child-friendly animated series that even adults can watch and laugh at. Every morning, my son would watch “The Super Hero Squad Show” and noticed that his cousin is often playing the video game on the PC, so I can imagine the allure to this series. It’s unlike the other Marvel animated series which are action-packed but “The Super Hero Squad” tends to mix in action along with plenty of comedic humor.

As a long time Marvel fan, you can’t help but laugh at the situations that the characters are in.  From Wolverine and the Hulk having to babysit the Squad who have been turned to toddlers, Mister Fantastic and Ms. Marvel trying to save the Squad, while Captain America takes on Hydra.  Adam Warlock being stuck in a jail cell with Thanos and more!  And of course, to conclude this second season, finally seeing the Super Hero Squad taking on the Dark Surfer!

Also, for Marvel fans, it was great to see the guest appearances by Mister Fantastic, Hydra, Baron Strucker, Impossible Man, Impossible Woman, The Space Phantoms, Guardians of the Galaxy, Elders of the Universe and more!

And for this season, the thought of Silver Surfer as this dark, maniacal villain is rather interesting.

For the most part, the series is fun but there was no doubt the writers took a more accessible, simpler plot to end “The Infinity Gauntlet” episodes.  Not as heavy hitting for those who are familiar with the comic book storyline but I figured that with this series being targeted for younger viewers, the conclusion to the second season is appropriate, while some fans may find the writing, especially the season finale to be too simplistic.

While the animated series is for children, the special features are not.  Featuring three episodes of “What the..?!”, these special features utilize the Marvel Legends action figures in fun, stop motion short storylines as Wolverine wants to gain revenge on his fellow heroes for playing a joke on him.

There are several scenes that are not appropriate for children as it does contain comical violence (ie. Kitty Pryde tearing a fake heart out of an action figure) and an upset Wolverine screaming “Mother F…..”, Black Panther saying “What the F…”, Wolverine pulling a prank on Captain America and saying “Go F…yourself!”, etc.  Comic violence features Beast pulling a hero’s arms off or Kitty Pryde pulling a hero’s heart out and more.

So, if you plan on buying this DVD for your children, parental guidance is necessary for the special features!

Overall, “The Super Hero Squad Show” is an entertaining children’s animated series that children and also the young at heart will enjoy.   A lot of Marvel’s cool characters are put into hilarious situations and it’s definitely an interesting, alternate take on the Marvel Universe.  I grew up reading Marvel Comics and also reading “The Infinity Gauntlet” limited series, so it was quite intriguing to see how they utilized this storyline for “The Super Hero Squad”.

I was a bit surprised by the inclusion of the “What the..!” special features, which as an adult, I thought was fun to see included on this DVD but as a parent, I caution parents buying this DVD due to the special features.  There is a warning shown before the special features but parents should be warned that these special features contains comical violence and profanity on the outside of the package.

But as for “The Super Hero Squad Show: The Infinity Gauntlet – Season 2, Volume 4”, this is another fun volume that concludes the second season.  Fun, hilarious and crazy, a DVD that your children and also the young at heart will truly enjoy!
