From Ali Adler, Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg (the creators of the “Arrow” and “The Flash” TV series) comes the fifth and final sixth season of the action-adventure drama CW TV series “Supergirl” available on Blu-ray and DVD on March 8, 2022.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray, which I am reviewing in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.

The series stars Melissa Benoist (“Whiplash”, “The Longest Ride”, “Glee”), Chyler Leigh (“Grey’s Anatomy”, “Not Another Teen Movie”, “Brake”), David Harewood (“Blood Diamond”, “Homeland”, “The Brothers Grimsby”),  Katie McGrath (“Jurassic World”, “King Arthur”, “Merlin”), Jesse Rath (“Defiance”, “The Trotsky”), Nicola Maines (“Bit”, “Royal Paines”), Azie Tesfai (“Jane the Virgin”, “Silicon Valley”), Chris Wood (“Masters of the Universe”, “Containment”, “The Vampire Diaries”), Mehcad Brooks (“The Valley of Elah”, “Glory Road”, “Necessary Roughness”) and Calista Flockhart (“Ally McBeal”, “Brothers & Sisters”, “The Birdcage”).

The final sixth season of “Supergirl” can be called the season of the Superfriends, a season of friendships and relationships.

We have watched the series focused on Kara and her relationships with her friends and fighting evil, but now, we get to watch the power of friendship, as the Superfriends come together to save Kara but also join her on the battlefield to fight against their biggest threat yet.

What is “Supergirl” about?

Supergirl”/Kara Zor-El, the youngesy daughter of Zor-El and Alura, is a survivor from the Planet Krypton.

When she was 12-years-old, she was placed in an escape vehicle before the Planet Krypton exploded. Her mother gave her instructions to protect her infant cousin, Kal-El (who would be known as Clark Kent/Superman) and similar to her cousin, she would have special powers once she arrives in Earth, due to the sun.

But as Kal-El made it to Earth, Kara’s spacecraft was caught in the shockwave of Krypton’s explosion and was stuck in the Phantom Zone where time has stopped and 24-years had passed but yet Kara has not aged.

Kal-El, who was Superman found Kara’s spacecraft and saved her. And he places her in the company of her new adoptive parents, the Danvers family and her sister Alex Danvers. And was taught to hide her powers and not use them.

The series takes place a decade later and Kara Danvers (portrayed by Melissa Benoist) is employed as an journalist at the CatCo Worldwide Media, a rival of the Daily Planet (who is doing better thanks to their coverage of Superman) and throughout the years, we have watched the company go through new ownership but still trying to find ways to gain readership and viewership.

Through her adventures as Supergirl, she is always assisted by her older sister Alex, who worked as a doctor, scientist and field agent for DEO, but now she is part of Kara’s group of Superfriends, using her skills and knowledge to assist her sister.

But she receives help from her friends such as J’onn J’onzz (Martian Manhunter), Lena Luthor, Queri “Brainy” Dox, Nia Nal (Dreamer), Kelly Olsen and more.

But with the threat of Lex Luthor, Nyxly causing problems for the Superfriends, can they defeat their biggest threat yet?

VIDEO:

“Supergirl” is presented in 1080p High Definition (1:78:1 aspect ratio). The picture quality for this series is very good. With its high production value and many outdoor scenes, overall picture quality shows very good detail, especially with closeups.

I didn’t notice any major banding issues or artifacts.

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

“Supergirl” is presented in English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The series is crystal clear when it comes to dialogue and action sequences. From the various battles that Supergirl takes part in, to the sounds of her flying through air, there is good use of the surround channels. Overall, lossless audio is very good for this action/drama TV series.

Subtitles are in English SDH, French and Spanish.

“Supergirl – The Sixth and Final Season” comes with a Digital HD Code.

Here we are with the sixth and final season of “Supergirl”.

One of the original trinity of the “Arrowverse”, with “Arrow” ending its run in 2020, many fans wondered what kind of sendoff it would be for “Supergirl”, as it was announced that this sixth season would be its final.  Leaving “The Flash” and “Legends of Tomorrow” as the only original “Arrowverse” series that will be continuing on, alongside “Batwoman”, “Superman & Lois” and “Stargirl”.

Fortunately, Warner Bros. would give an appropriate send off for the series, as we saw the series evolved to be more than just the powerhouse Supergirl, but it became a family of Superfriends, but showcasing the friendships and relationships that this series has nurtured and grown each season.

For Kara Zor-El/Kara Danvers (portrayed by Melissa Benoist), we watched the character balance life as a journalist and a superhero, but as the series evolved, we got to see Supergirl and her relation to her friends, knowing that to defeat their enemies, she can’t do it alone.

If anything, I think this season, we see Kara at her most vulnerable, but also the other characters who were put into difficult situations which has its share of ramifications.  And unfortunately, there is a tragedy that happens to a character.

We watched as her older sister Alexandra Danvers (portrayed by Chyler Leigh) as a bioengineer, physician, scientist and field agent of the DEO to evolve and become a new hero to join the Superfriends but also seeing her relationship as the protective sister over her Kara (Supergirl) and the her romantic relationship with Kelly Olsen (portrayed by Azie Tesfai).  But these two are put in a dire situation.

We watched J’onn J’onzz aka Martian Manhunter (portrayed by David Harewood) go from an alien trying to understand the world he now lives in, to becoming a defender of justice but also the mature friend giving reasonable advice to all members of the Superfriends, but most importantly, Kara.

And of course, Lena Luthor (portrayed by Katie McGrath), who’s friendship with Kara have been strained.  But now both of these friends need each other, especially to defeat their biggest threat next.

But there is no doubt that with season six, writers gave fans what they had hoped for, more Brainiac 5 (Queri Dox, as portrayed by Jesse Rath) and more Nia Nal/Dreamer (portrayed by Nicole Maines), who no doubt gave a fun and hilarious scenes each time they were on camera.  But Nia also faces challenges by making a decision that will change her life and her friend’s lives.

Having watched this season since the beginning, I felt the series was finding its own footing.  Less dependence on the “Arrowverse” and one thing that the other CW photos have found is a way to utilize characters, not just like secondary characters to its primary hero, but to bring everyone together as a cohesive group.

While Season Six is the final season, the writers knew what gravitated to their viewers and that’s the personal relationships these characters have found with each other.  Each character finding their place alongside Supergirl and there are episodes which feature the Superfriends and less of Supergirl.  Fans were starting to have their favorites and also finding love from fans, especially the LGBTQ community.

But one must admit how this series is quite groundbreaking for a superhero series.  The series featured a female superhero as the protagonist.  A sister who not only was bright scientist, but also a field agent who kicked ass and is a lesbian engaged to an African-American woman.

You have actress Nicole Amber Maines, the transgender rights activist, being the first person to portray a transgender superhero on television.

While the show broke new ground, the season finale had fans ala Supercorp shippers on social media, their eyes glued to the season finale, hoping if close friends, Kara and Lena Luthor would hook up.

But while the series may not have been a ratings powerhouse it was a beloved series that managed to do things differently from its other “Arrowverse” counterparts and for those who watched the series from beginning to end, we saw these characters grow, their friendships grow and above all, these characters will be missed.

As a longtime fan of “Supergirl” (old “Action Comics” storyline), and this is going far back to the actual comic books, she was a fascinating character that some writers did not know how to to make her character work.  It was bad enough that when she returned to comic books in the late ’80s, she was a man-made lifeform created by Lex Luthor, which as a long time reader of “Supergirl”, was a bad idea.  Writer Peter David tried to right that wrong years later, to merge her with a human in 1996 and in 2001, rebooted her once again to be an amnesiac who would later die again.

The “Supergirl” TV series does much better than DC writers could hope to write, because the writers developed a strong character who has her own flaws, trying to balance her career and being a superhero.  But having her superhero friends and family fight alongside with her.  Strategize with her.  Finding ways to defeat an enemy and promoting the series as a team series.

If you notice with each cover of “Supergirl” Blu-ray and DVD releases, Kara was often featured as solo.  This time around, it’s the team.  And that is what fans love about “Supergirl”, the team, the characters…Superfriends.

I can only hope that if DC ever brings Supergirl back to the comic books, they find ways to make her as a good and cool as the character as she was in the TV series.

Overall, a wonderful sendoff for viewers who dedicated nearly seven years of their life to “Supergirl”.  If you have stuck with the series for this long, you already know that “Supergirl – The Sixth and Final Season” is definitely recommended!
