SDN48 – MIN・MIN・MIN (Theater Edition) (a J!-ENT World Groove CD Single Review)

The theater edition of “MIN・MIN・MIN” is the cheaper alternative to buying the Type-A and Type-B CD+DVD versions of the single.  And on its own, it’s a pretty cool single with four solid tracks of upbeat songs!  The songs definitely fit into the persona of SDN48 with more mature lyrics (with the exception of “Everyday, Kachuusha”).  But you really can’t go wrong with this single, it’s upbeat, addictive and the best of SDN48’s first three singles so far.

Back in 2008, AKB48 producer/creator Yasushi Akimoto wanted to create a more sexier idol group and one that would perform only on Saturday night at 10 p.m. for audiences over 18.

The group would be known as SDN48 (Saturday Night 48) which he would send a few AKB48 members to the new group and hold auditions.  Former Team K member Kayo Noro would become the team captain and would also feature Team K member Megumi Ohori.

And so far, the group has done well with their first two singles “Gagaga” and “Ai, Chuseyo” which debuted at #3 on the Oricon Charts.

And now SDN48 has released their new single “MIN・MIN・MIN” which also debuted at #3 on the Oricon Weekly Charts and is their largest selling single so far!

“MIN・MIN・MIN” was released in three different versions.  Type-A would feature the third track “Abazure” featuring Undergirls B and Type-B would feature an SDN48 version of the popular AKB48 song “Everyday, Kachuusha”.  And each of the two will come with DVD’s with different content.  The third version is the Theater Edition which comes with both “Abazure” and SDN48’s version of “Everyday, Katchuusha”.

The version that I will be reviewing is the Theater Edition of “MIN・MIN・MIN”.

The insert is a tri-fold which features photos of the group on one side and also production credits, while the opposite side features the lyrics for the four songs.

The first track “MIN・MIN・MIN” is an enjoyable upbeat pop song which features the top 12 SDN48 members .  The track title really has no meaning but I guess one can equate it to your heart beating faster when you try to do something).  But the song is synth and beat driven, the track is quite addictive and catchy and  is about a person who was preoccupied with another and ended up in a break-up.  And quickly that person realizes how much they neglected the other and regrets it.  And now the person regrets not spending time or paying attention to the person that was close to her.  And she tries to keep you from leaving and clings to that person’s back in hopes that he/she doesn’t end the relationship.

The second track “Onedari Champagne” (which translates to “Pink Champagne”) is an upbeat, idol dance track performed by Undergirls A and almost reminds me of older idol songs with the “Shu Shu Shu” sung at different parts of the song.  The song actually ties into the photo that is featured on the single, with the members in dresses that look like they are from a host club.  The song is pretty much about the women singing to the guy to not be stingy with their money, have some fun and that they want pink champagne.  And the song is pretty much trying to keep the customer busy by having a fun atmosphere and drinking a lot of pink champagne.

The third track is performed by Undergirls A and is titled “Abazure” (which translates to “Bitch”) and is another upbeat dance track, where as “Onedari Champagne” was cute and idol-like, this one is more contemporary pop.  And the lyrics to this song are quite fascinating.    The chorus is pretty much “I’m a bitch, not a whore.  I’m a bitch, I don’t need money, I just need someone to talk to” but the lyrics tells a story of a person who loves having her freedom and not being emotionally attached to a guy and takes part in one night stands.  Definitely, one of their more suggestive songs.

The fourth and final track on the single is SDN48’s version of the AKB48 song “Everyday, Kachuusha” (which translates to “Everyday, Headband).  The music is the same arrangement as the AKB48 song but of course, featuring SND48 members on vocals.  And the SDN48 version is pretty good!

The song is about going to a beach with a girl you like and while the two have been good friends for a long time, the other starts to recognize the girl, after she removes her headband, you see them in a new light as an adult. And since the day you met her, she has always wore a headband to class and you see that headband like a halo on an angel and never wanting that person to change.

Overall, the theater edition of “MIN・MIN・MIN” is the cheaper alternative to buying the Type-A and Type-B CD+DVD versions of the single.
