Cartoon Network will release the much anticipated complete seasons set for it hit animated comedy series Regular Show. Fans of all ages will love the Complete First and Second Seasons set available on Blu-ray (2-discs) and DVD (3-discs). This release will include all 40 episodes from seasons 1 and 2 plus over 2 hours of hilarious bonus content inspired by the creator. The Emmy award-wining hit comedy for Outstanding Animated Program is part of the popular Monday night line-up on Cartoon Network along with the hit show Adventure Time. In 2010, J.Q. Quintel (“The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack”, “Camp Lazlo!”) created “Regular Show”, an adult animated sitcom for the Cartoon Network. Based on characters developed during his years at the California Institute of Arts, Quintel pitched the “Regular Show” to Cartoon Network’s Cartoonstitute project and the show was green-lit.
Quintel recruited a few indie comic book artists as part of staff and “Regular show” became a reality on September 2010 and now is currently on its fifth season. The series have also done quite well in the ratings, a winner of an Emmy and has been nominated for an “Annie” award.
And now “Regular Show: The Complete First and Second Seasons” will be released on Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Cartoon Network/Warner Bros. in July 2013.
“Regular Show” is an animated series that revolves around two friends, a Blue Jay named Mordecai and a racoon named Rigby, who tend to get themselves into trouble quite often and work as groundskeepers at a park.
The characters of “The Regular Show” are:
- Mordecai – A 23-year-old, 6’3″ tall Blue Jay that works as a groundskeeper and is best friends with a racoons named Rigby. The moral character of the two, he always seems to go along with Rigby’s ideas and antics.
- Rigby – A 23-year-old raccoon who is best friends with Mordecai and works as a groundskeeper. He is immature and tends to get him and Mordecai into trouble quite often.
- Benson – A gumball machine and the manager of the park that Mordecai and Rigby work at. He is often angry at the two because of the trouble they create and has a hot-temper.
- Skips – A yeti groundskeeper who is immortal and must perform a ceremonial dance on his birthday, if he does not perform it, he will die. Often saving Mordecai and Rigby when they are in trouble.
- Pops Maellard – A man with a lollipop shaped head. He is also a parks manager along with Benson but does groundskeeper work. He is always happy and gives people lollipops. His father Mr. Maellard owns the park.
- Mitch “Muscle Man” Sorenstein – A groundskeeper who looks like an overweight Frankenstein. He is a prankster.
- Hi-Five Ghost – A good friend of Mitch and rarely talks.
- Margaret Smith – A red robin that works at the local coffee shop and knows that Mordecai likes her.
- Eileen – A mole who looks human and also works at the local coffee shop with Margaret and has a crush on Rigby.
- Mr. Maellard – Like Pops, he is also a lollipop man and often blames Benson for everything.

“Regular Show: The Complete First and Second Seasons” is presented in 1080p High Definition (presented in 16×9). Colors are vibrant, color palette is colorful and while the character designs may lack incredible detail and shading of other animated series, what makes “Regular Show” work so magnificently are its characters and the predicaments they get themselves into. But picture quality is very good.
During my viewing of the series, I did not see any artifacts, banding, even during scenes with a lot of red or orange. Line detail is very strong and for the most part, fans of the series should be happy with the overall presentation.

“Regular Show: The Complete First and Second Seasons” is presented in English Dolby TrueHD 2.0, Dolby Digital English, French and Spanish 5.1, subtitles are in English SDH and Spanish. Dialogue is crystal clear. Not an immersive soundtrack but the series sounds great! (Note: the back of the package lists the soundtrack to be English Dolby TrueHD 5.1, they are not).

It’s interesting to see how “Regular Show” has become the popular animated series in our household. My son can’t get enough of the series and I have to also say that with series creator J.G. Quintel coming from the same area where I grew up, it’s great to see people inspired by what Quintel accomplished.
The story of a guy from a small town attending the California Institute of the Arts and then learning to create animated short films which led him to an internship at Cartoon Network to work on “Star Wars: Clone Wars” and to later work on “Camp Lazlo”.
In 2008, he pitched “Regular Show” for Cartoon Network’s “Cartoonstitute Project” and now he and a crew of 35 people are working on their fourth season. Suffice to say, J.G. Quintel has become the Hanford, California’s celebrity (after Journey’s Steve Perry) and giving hope to the creatives of agriculture area – Kings County that dreams to have an animated series on television is possible.
So, with the Blu-ray release of “Regular Show: The Complete First and Second Seasons”, what I enjoyed about the series is its characters, the humor but also the series using popular ’80s songs for its soundtrack.
To have a series based on characters that are a raccoon, blue jay, yeti, a lollipop man and a gumball machine is so far out there! It’s hard to believe that there is a series like this but the writers do a great job of creating this fun atmosphere with crazy storylines and it works!
I know the series has been compared to “Ren & Stimpy” and even “Beavis & Butthead” because of the antics of both the characters of Mordecai and Rigby but where “Beavis & Butthead” aimed to be crude and controversial, while “Ren & Stimpy” played on certain themes that people can see on shows like “SpongeBob SquarePants”, “Regular Show” is different in the fact that you have two lazy park employees who love video games and get into trouble.
The antics on the series are fun and crazy for children, while for adults, who grew up in the ’80s, we can find humor in the music, the arcade competitions, video games and 8-bit graphics and such. So, it’s a series that will appeal for people of all ages.
And for this Blu-ray release, the fact that you get 40-episodes, each with its own audio commentary and many other special features is a major plus! Picture quality is very good, colors are vibrant, I saw no banding. Audio is primarily dialogue driven but it’s important to note that the episodes are in Dolby Digital 2.0 not in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 as mentioned on the package.
My ten-year-old absolutely loves this show, my wife and I have watched the series with him and for the most part, there are no antics that he has learned that I consider negative. Aside from saying “Ello Gov’nor” over and over, it’s a series that the whole family can watch and enjoy.
Overall, “Regular Show: The Complete First and Second Seasons” is a magnificent Blu-ray release for the fans. All 40-episodes from the first two seasons, audio commentary for all episodes, the unaired pilot and more! An awesome release that is highly recommended!
