The Pound Puppies are a team of fearless dogs whose sworn mission is to find homes for lonely puppies. Even though they look like regular dogs, these pro-active pooches match up pups with loving families fulfilling the mantra of a pup for every person and a person for every pup—all while they keep the humans at Shelter 17 clueless. Sometimes dogs are dogs’ best friend!

“Pound Puppies”, the popular toy franchise from Tonka (which is now owned by Hasbro) that entertained young boys and girls with an animated series and toys which lasted from 1986 through 1989.

Similar to Hasbro’s animated TV series marketed to children, such as “Transformers”, “My Little Pony” and “G.I. Joe”, many adults who grew up with the series, collected the toys and hoped for a new series for their children and the next generation of fans who are passionate for the new toyline.

In Oct. 2010, “Pound Puppies” was the latest Hasbro Studios animated series to appear on The Hub and is produced by Paul and Joe Productions.

While the original toyline featured puppies with droopy eyes and floppy ears and a series about a group of puppies looking for a new home, this incarnation of “Pound Puppies” features a similar storyline, but this time the group are dogs that have human-like intelligence and live in a dog pound Shelter 17.

The Pound Puppies and a few squirrels operate a secret underground facility beneath the dog pound and try to help puppies find homes.  Their motto is “A pup for every person, and a person for every pup” and they help the dogs from being detected by the dog pound’s human staff.

In each episode, the Pound Puppies try to help a different dog with their challenge.  And help to match that dog with a new owner.

The main character of the series is Lucky (voiced by Erin McCormack) who is the chief commander.  His group consists of a boxer named Cookie (voiced by Yvette Nicole Brown) and is Lucky’s second-in-command.  Niblet (voiced by John DiMaggio), who is a huge and clumsy sheepdog, Strudel (voiced by Alanna Ubach), a genius dachshund who creates inventions for the Pound Puppies and Squirt (voiced by Michael Rapaport), the streetsmart chihuahua.

The following episodes are included in this DVD:

  • (EPISODE 11) Homeward Bound – Squirt and Niblet accidentally enter a departing plane and now they must find a way back home.
  • (EPISODE 08) My Fair Rebound – Ms. McLeish is jealous of her wealthy friend and thus wants to enter Rebound in a dog show against her rival, upper class canine.
  • (EPISODE 09) Quintuplets – The Pound Puppies try to get quintuplets adopted.
  • (EPISODE 19) K-9 Kid – The Pound Puppies meet Pepper, a K9 dog.
  • (EPISODE 15) Zoltron – Zoltron gets separated from his family and needs the help of the Pound Puppies.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“Pound Puppies: Homeward Pound” is presented in 1:78:1 Anamorphic Widescreen and 2.0 Stereo. The series features a colorful palette with a lot of colors and character designs that will appeal to young children.  Picture quality is good and dialogue and music is crystal clear.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“Pound Puppies: Homeward Pound” comes with the following special features:

  • How to Draw Lucky – (4:35) Illustrator Mike West teaches how to draw Lucky.

Back in the ’80s, my sister was a big collector of “Pound Puppies” (and also “My Little Pony”) and my familiarity with the series is more of the commercials that aired on television at the time.

And as a parent who have seen Hasbro bring back a lot of these popular ’80s series (and toyline) for a new generation of children, for any parent who grew up with the toys or the original animated series, will no doubt enjoy this release, especially if they want to share it with their kids.

The series is accessible for both young boys and girls as there are male and female canine characters featured.  Also, the storyline leans more towards a savvy group of dogs who try to help other dogs find a home.

The series is rather upbeat and fun, where as its counterpart “My Little Pony” is a bit more dramatic, this animated series is more comedy and definitely geared towards young children.

The animated series is absolutely safe and there is a message to be learned with each episode.  The DVD features five fun episodes plus a “learn how to draw Lucky” special feature.

Overall, “Pound Puppies” is a fun animated series for children and if you are looking for a fun series featuring canine with human-like intelligence, definitely give this DVD, “Pound Puppies: Homeward Pound” a chance!
