In 2008, AKB48 creator/producer Yasushi Akimoto created a subunit from AKB48’s Team A first generation members Minami Takahashi, Haruna Kojima and Minami Minegishi known as No Sleeves (no3b) for CD release and Persona for digital release.

The idea of no3b came with Akimoto wanted to create a group that featured members without the AKB48 uniforms.  This time sporting outfits with no sleeves.  And thus, no3b was born.   As for Persona, the group revolves around the male characters that the three AKB48 members play in the drama series “Men-Dol”.

And to begin 2010, no3b has released their fourth CD single “Lie”, their highest ranking Oricon CD single so far.  The single is produced by Inoue Yoshimasa (producer of AKB48’s recent singles “River” and “Namida Surprise”) and a single that also features a remix version of their first digital single using their digital group name as Persona titled “3seconds”.

“Lie” was released as four single versions.  While the CD version are the same, the DVD’s are different.  Released was the regular edition (includes no DVD) and as for three limited edition versions, each cover features one of the members in the center.

The TakaMina version is TYPE-A and comes with a music video plus a “Making Clip – Dance Version), the NyanNyan (Haru Kojima) TYPE-B version which comes with the music video and the jacket shooting footage and the third TYPE-C version features Miichan (Minami Minegishi) and comes with the music video and “Making Clip – Close-up version).  First pressing releases come with an event ticket and a bonus poster.

The version that I am reviewing is the Limited Edition – Type-C version which features Minegishi in the center.   The CD insert features 8-pages and includes the lyrics and production notes with pictures of the three members individually.

The first track on the CD single is “Lie” and is smooth dance track with a little Spanish flair.  The song is about two people in a relationship and one person tests the other’s feelings to find out if the other truly loves them.  The other person tries to convey that they love the person and they long for that person… but the other thinks its a lie and doesn’t believe it.  Overall, a fun and catch track!

The second track is the remix version of “3Seconds by Persona and used for the drama series “Men-Dol”.  The song is an upbeat track which I enjoy for its acoustic guitar solo but as for the song itself, it’s about looking at a person for 3 seconds and instantly falling in love with them.

The remaining two tracks are the instrumental versions of the first two songs.

As for the DVD, the first DVD track features the three dancing in a factory or warehouse while they dance.  And first thing that came to mind after watching this video was that this is probably the shortest shorts I have seen TakaMina wear.  But interesting costume design to give each member their own distinctive look.  But the video features the three dancing and singing until three male dancers start to challenge them in a street dance.  And then the six start dancing together.  I probably could have enjoyed the video much more without the male dancers and the grease and dirt on the closeup of the faces of the girls faces.

The second video shows us the making of the closeup segments of the music video (ie. the scenes with grease and dirt on the faces of the members faces).

The third video clip is “Lie Karaoke” but not sure if this was titled incorrectly.  What it shows is the dance version of the music video and nothing to do with karaoke, nor does selecting a left or right channel allow for the removal of vocals.  But I’m actually glad that this third video is the actual dance version of the music video as there are no male dancers or close-up of greasy/dirty faces of the members.

It’s important to note that this is a region 2 DVD and will not play on a region 1 player (unless you have a non-region DVD player) but can be played on a MAC or PC using free video playing software such as VLC or Daum PotPlayer.

Overall, I really enjoyed this CD+DVD single release.  Songs that are full of energy and love how the three sing “Lie Lie Lie” in the song.  Loved the arrangement and it’s a catchy fourth single from no3b!

And the videos were pretty cool especially the extra video tracks!  Unfortunately, if you want to see the actual making of the music video, you’ll need to buy all three types of the limited edition releases.  But this is all part of idol marketing in Japan and trying to get the most sales from a single.

But if you are a no3b, TakaMina, NyanNyan or Miichan fan, “Lie” is a CD single worth recommending!
