School days, school days! Get ready for the first day of school with your preschool pals from Nickelodeon! This year, celebrate school with Dora, Diego, Blue’s Clues, the Wonder Pets, and Kai-lan all together on one DVD!

For many young children who grew up with watching Nickelodeon shows such as “Dora the Explorer”, “Go, Diego, Go!”, “Blue’s Clues”, “Wonder Pets!” and “Ni Hao, Kai-Lan”, eventually these young children will begin the next stage of their life attending pre-school or kindergarten.  And for some who have not went to pre-school or let alone have been away from their parents, the idea of going to school and away from home for hours away from family can be a scary situation.

So, Nickelodeon has put together a compilation DVD titled “The First Day of School” featuring episodes from Nickelodeon’s popular children shows which all revolve around the theme of attending school.

Included on this DVD are:

  • First Day of School – In this episode of “Dora the Explorer”, Dora takes Boots and Tico for their first day of school and Boots learns Spanish while Tico learns English.
  • Linda the Librarian – In this episode of “Go, Diego, Go!”, Linda the Llama has to bring her library books up to the new mountaintop library.  Diego helps Linda out!
  • Blue Takes You to School – Joe plays Blue’s Clues and ask for your help to figure out which part of school is Blue’s favorite.  Meanwhile, help Perlwinkle make new friends.
  • Off to School” and “Save the Pangaroo” – The Wonder Pets helps Baby Blowfish feel good for her first day in Fish Preschool and to help Pangaroo (a half-parrot/kangaroo).
  • Lulu Day – Kai-Lan and Lulu have a special play date.  But what happens when they want to do different things?  The two learn about compromise and sharing.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

The episodes featured in “The First Day of School” is presented in full screen and in Dolby Digital stereo. Animation features vibrant colors and dialogue is clear and understandable. Picture quality is dependent on the series as “Dora the Explorer”, “Go, Diego, Go!” and “Ni Hao, Kai-Lan” are animation-based, “Blue’s Clues” and “Wonder Pets!” tend to combine CG. But overall, this is for the children and the picture and audio quality should be satisfactory.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

There are no special features included on this DVD.

“The First Day of School” is a fun release for children and also parents who want to find DVD’s that can be educational for children. My young son literally grew up in his young toddler years watching many of Nickelodeon’s children’s series and through this series, it was very helpful in helping him develop skills on decision making and also learning a little Spanish.

In this DVD series, children are eased into the concept of school.  Granted, the first day of school is not easy for all children but this DVD does help in easing the children to the concept of school, the concept of learning, going to the library, the fun things that can be done at school and learning about sharing and more.

If there was one thing that I am a bit critical about this DVD release, I was hoping that there would be some DVD-Rom content, games or some sort of special feature content included on this DVD. From coloring pages, to fun facts or anything that children can take advantage of after they watch the episodes. But of course, that is me being picky.

For the most part, your young children should be entertained by this release. All episodes are safe for children and parents will also be happy to know that they can learn from each of these episodes.  Granted, this DVD is not going to relieve all pre-first day of school anxiety but every bit helps and in this case, this DVD may easily help reduce some of those jitters.

Overall, for any parent who has a child that is going to pre-school or kindergarten for the first time, “The First Day of School” is a wonderfully fun and entertaining way to introduce your children to the concept of school.
