Men at Work: The Complete First Season (a J!-ENT DVD Review)

“Men at Work: The Complete First Season” is a man show about working hard, playing hard and having a lot of fun.  It’s geared towards men and the theme relies on guys just wanting to have fun, hooking up with women and having sex.  It may not be for everyone but it is a series with potential and I look forward to season two!

Get your daily dose of menspiration in this laugh-out-loud comedy series created by writer and director Breckin Meyer (Road Trip, TV’s “Franklin & Bash”). Irreverent and outrageously funny, MEN AT WORK: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON follows the misadventures of Milo (Danny Masterson, TV’s “That ’70s Show”), Neal (Adam Busch, TV’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), Tyler (Michael Cassidy, Argo) and Gibbs (James Lesure, TV’s “Las Vegas”), four sex-obsessed employees at a Manhattan-based men’s magazine who have each other’s backs as they mate, date and relate to women.

From comedian Breckin Meyer comes the TBS TV Series “Men at Work” starring Danny Masterson (“That 70’s Show”, “Yes Man”), Michael Cassidy (“Argo”, “Zoom”), Adam Busch (“Leon: The Professional”, “American Dreamz”) and James Lesure (“Crimson Tide”, “The Ring Two”).

With the second season set to air in April 2013, the first season featuring ten half-hour episodes will be released on DVD in March 2013 courtesy of Sony Pictures Home entertainment.

EXTRAS:

“Men at Work: The Complete First Season” comes with a slipcover.

As a fan of “That 70’s Show”, I was looking forward to checking out Danny Masterson’s new show “Men at Work: The Complete First Season”.

The show is pretty much a comedy about a group of guys who work at the same magazine publisher and supporting each other, may it be their wingman, for work related situations or guys just hanging out and talking about sex and having fun.

For the first season, chemistry between the four guys are good, although some may feel the characters may be one-dimensional.  Tyler is the pretty boy and seems to care about his work and furniture, Gibbs is constantly thinking about women and sex, while Neal is discovering himself through his relationship with Amy and both are like beginners, a couple trying out different things.  While Milo, the main protagonist is pretty much the guy you feel sorry for and hope he rebounds.

But the big question is how does “Men at Work” evolve for season two.

We have seen shows like “The Big Bang Theory” slowly incorporate female characters (the girlfriends) which proved to be a success, while a comedy show with also a lead character that was dumped, “Happy Ending”, having the protagonist exploring the dating scene and other life and career ambitions.

But for the first season alone, it’s a fun guy show about the guys having fun, hanging out and some hoping to get laid.  A show that works well for an evening show on cable and thus the sexual humor and profanity takes the crazy experiences up a notch.  But I see the first season as character driven episodes introducing the characters and hopefully the writers go wild with season two.  Also another thing that I enjoyed about these episodes was too see former “That 70’s Show” cast members Laura Prepon and Wilmer Valderrama show up in season 1 and hope to see or series cameos in future episodes.

As for the DVD, the episodes look good on DVD and comes with outtakes and deleted scenes.

Overall, “Men at Work: The Complete First Season” is a man show about working hard, playing hard and having a lot of fun.  It’s geared towards men and the theme relies on guys just wanting to have fun, hooking up with women and having sex.  It may not be for everyone but it is a series with potential and I look forward to season two!
