Aladdin tells the story of the fallen Alma Tran. In the distant past, in another world, humanity struggled to survive an onslaught of monsters, but once united against them, human sorcerers became as bad as the enemies they once fought. Solomon himself struggled to lead humanity up out of the darkness it had created, but with every victory comes sacrifice.
With the 23rd volume of Shinobu Ohtaka’s hit manga “Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic”, the story shifts to the past as we see how Aladdin’s mother Falan and his father Solomon got together but the challenges they had faced as humans and animals are unable to coexist. But also the war against Solomon’s father, David is to begin.
What is “Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic”?
When it comes to opportunities of becoming a manga writer/artist (mangaka), Shinobu Ohtaka’s story.
She has written about her story of how she became a manga artist, as a person who was the person who would sit quietly in the corner of class and was not really great at anything and often playing a supporting role. But if there was one thing that she was confident in, it was drawing pictures.
Her first year in high school, she was submitting manga manuscripts because it was her dream to become a manga author. And like many writers, her submissions were denied and this continued through high school and college. And when she was about to call it quits, she was given the opportunity to do a one-shot and it led to the creation of the series “Sumomo Momomo” in 2004 which would eventually become 22 volume manga series and also a 22-episode anime series.
After completing “Sumomo Momomo”, Shinobu then created “Magi” which would be serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2009 and to this day, the series is till ongoing (currently, at 17 volumes) and an anime adaptation which was aired in Japan in Oct. 2012 – March 2013 and a new second season which has aired in Japan.
In volume 23 of “Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic”, the story introduces readers to the distant past. Aladdin’s story goes back to when his father Solomon was a leader and his mother Falan was just an up-and-coming sorcerer.
Solomon wants to create a peaceful world where human and beast can co-exist. But can they?
Also, Falan has loved Solomon for so long but will he ever look at her as an equal, rather than a younger sister?
Meanwhile, David has abandoned his base and is prepared to attack, as with Solomon and his people as the great war is to begin.
Since the beginning of “Magi”, there have been questions of the Djinn, how they came to be and their relationship to Aladdin, especially with the character of Ugo and who his parents may be.
With volume 23 of Shinobu Ohtaka’s “Magi: The Labyrinth”, those questions are answered.
The storyline features how grave things were back then among magoi users when a twisted magoi user known as David has brought fear to the land, but his son, Solomon has treated the people with kindness and wants to push for a peaceful co-existence between man and beast.
Meanwhile, a young sorceress named Falan, who has grown up with Solomon, wants to be his wife but she sees him as nothing more but as a child. Can she convince him that she is a a woman that can be his wife?
Featuring wonderful character designs and artwork by Shinobu Ohtaka, “Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic” vol. 23 introduces the past and who Aladdin’s parents were and how they met.
