Lucifer: The Sixth and Final Season (a J!-ENT DVD Review)

The final season can be described as a season of hope.  All loose ends being tied.  And a conclusion that was befitting for the characters.  The writers no doubt ensured that to the very end and as a fan of the series, I’m most appreciative of them for doing that.

The story of the original fallen angel concludes, with the charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), abandoning his kingdom for the gorgeous, shimmering insanity of Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping savvy LAPD detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German) take down criminals. In the sixth and final season of LUCIFER, we close the chapter on our crime-solving Devil. With Los Angeles no longer the battleground for his angelic siblings, Lucifer’s relationship with Chloe has never been stronger. Life is good. But if we know anything about this fallen angel, it’s that his past always finds a way of catching up to him!

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of this DVD, which I am reviewing in this blog post.

The opinions I share are my own.

Back in 1989, DC Comic’s mature imprint, Vertigo, featured the first appearance of Lucifer, featured in the fourth issue of “The Sandman” created by Neil Gaiman.

Lucifer would be about the Biblical fallen angel and devil of Christianity and his adventures on Earth, Heaven and the character abandoning Hell.

While the comic book series had a good run from 2000-2006, a TV series adaptation would be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television.

The first three seasons were featured on Fox, while Netflix picked up the series for three more seasons and with the sixth season airing in 2001, the sixth season would be the final and a way for the writers to give a proper goodbye for the characters.

And while the series was not part of the “Arrowverse” such as the CW Series “The Flash”, “Batwoman”, “Supergirl”, “Arrow” or “Legends of Tomorrow”, the character of Lucifer Morningstar would appear in The CW Arrowverse crossover event, “Crisis on Infinite Earths” establishing a connection with the character John Constantine.

The series would be about Lucifer Morningstar (portrayed by Tom Ellis) who was the Lord of Hell and becoming bored with life, he abandoned his throne in Hell for five years and becomes a civilian consultant for the Los Angeles Police Department and also running a high-end nightclub, Lux.

Lucifer would begin to have an interest and relationship with Detective Chloe Decker (portrayed by Lauren German) who is a single mother of Trixie, while her ex-husband and former LAPD homicide detective Dan Espinoza is trapped in Hell and hopes that Lucifer Morningstar can bring him to Heaven, which Lucifer can’t assist him with because it’s up to Dan to find out why he is riddled with guilt.

Meanwhile, Lucifer’s older brother Amenadiel (portrayed by D.B. Woodside), an angel who originally encouraged Lucifer to return back to Hell, is now living on Earth (trying to be a police officer) to raise his half-human/half-angel child, with Dr. Linda Martin (portrayed by Rachael Harris), a psychotherapist who is also helping Lucifer with his issues, while being a devil and living on Earth.

Assisting Lucifer is Mazikeen “Maze” (portrayed by Lesley-Ann Brandt), who is a heat torturer and demon who followed Lucifer from Hell to Los Angeles and works as a bounty hunter and has a relationship with Eve (portrayed by Inbar Lavi), the world’s first human, who has left Adam and Lucifer’s former lover and mother of Cain.

Meanwhile, at the LAPD, Lucifer receives help from Ella Lopez, a forensic scientist who suspects that Lucifer, Amenadiel and others are demons and angels.

With sixth and final season of “Lucifer”, the story takes place after Lucifer sacrificed his life to resurrect Chloe and his sacrifice shown to the other angels in Heaven that he is worthy of becoming the new “God”.

But complications are in store for Lucifer, when a young woman named Rory with red angel wings with blades appears out of nowhere and claims to be his daughter.  But she wants to kill him for not being in the life of her and her mother.

For Lucifer, he believes it to be untrue because he would be aware if he had a daughter which setups an investigation to find out who this girl is and who her mother is.

With the series entering its final season, the writers no doubt gave an endearing farewell, knowing that many fans grew up with the series and also when the series switched to Netflix (and also able to have a more mature theme), the series gained in popularity and viewership.

Each of the major characters play their part for this sixth and final season.

As the final season is pretty much about Lucifer trying to discover his life’s calling and everyone important to him.  It’s the characters that make it all work!

We get to see Chloe Decker grow as one with power and without spoiling much, seeing her relationship grow with Lucifer but also with others.  If anything, I feel that actress Lauren German was given a chance to shine as an actress, to show various sides of her, may it be her action/kick-butt side or her more emotional side which plays a big part in this series.

Dan Espinoza played a limited role at the beginning of the series, but once his character tries to search for his guilt, that’s when you get to see the character also shine.  Sometimes humorous, sometimes emotional, Dan’s role was expanded and actor Kevin Alejandro did great.

Now, one thing that was very interesting was how the writers could include the topic of racial discrimination and police corruption.  As Amenadiel pursues a career in the LAPD and him getting a better understanding through his police partner of the harsh realities in the city.  It’s a different side to Amenadiel, but a way to give him a better vision of life on Earth. Writers also have fun with Amenadiel this season, as he is the person who is interacting with “ghost” Dan, that no one can see.  So, people think Amenadiel is a bit weird as he is having discussions with someone (who is not there).

We also get to see Maze grow, as a partner involved in a relationship with Eve.  We always have seen her in kick-butt mode but we get to see her character grow to this point where she goes from head torturer of Lucifer to this person who is in love and jealous when Adam returns for Eve.

Ella Lopez also gets a boost this final season as she is a person who plays the jilted friend that knows something is up with her friends.  In a way, her role reminds me of the other DC Comics TV series “Supergirl”, as Lena Luthor felt jilted that she was the only person that didn’t know Kara Danvers was Supergirl and played out the whole season, fortunately writers didn’t make this Ella’s whole season.  If anything, her role is stronger this season as we get to see her growing closer to Detective Carol Corbett, but also with Lucifer and friends.  Ella plays a big role this season and actress Aimee Garcia did a wonderful job.

And the last person I will discuss, but I can’t say much without spoiling the season is the addition of “Rory”, played by Brianna Hildebrand.  An angel with red wings with blades that wants revenge on Lucifer, who says he is her father that abandoned her and her mother.

Rory became a character that I absolutely loved seeing in this series.  And it’s unfortunate that she appears in the final season but she plays a major role that leads to a finale that is most fitting.

The final season of “Lucifer” is my favorite or my favorite final seasons.  The writers really put a lot of attention in making sure each person’s storyline is given a proper attention and everyone is given a goodbye scene.

As I gave credit to every character, actor Tom Ellis gave the performance of his life in this final season of “Lucifer”.  The man can sing, dance, fight, do humor but we get to see him in a role of one who seemed lost, frustrated, confused with the appearance of a girl claiming to be his daughter, falling in love with Khloe but the devil seeking purpose in his life to be a better angel or the God.

The final season can be described as a season of hope.  All loose ends being tied.  And a conclusion that was befitting for the characters.  The writers no doubt ensured that to the very end and as a fan of the series, I’m most appreciative of them for doing that.

For those interested in purchasing the DVD version, it comes with a gag reel and deleted scenes.  Of course, for those wanting the best picture quality would want to opt for the Blu-ray release.

Overall, the final season can be described as a season of hope.  All loose ends being tied.  And a conclusion that was befitting for the characters.  The writers no doubt ensured that to the very end and as a fan of the series, I’m most appreciative of them for doing that.
