life in plastic: LEGO Monastery of Spinjitzu (#70670)

legoreviews

The LEGO Speed Champions Ferrari 488 GT3 “Scuderia Corsa” (#75886 ) set is a wonderful vehicle/minifigure set. While not saying the female racer is two-time champ, Christina Nielsen (who raced for Scuderia Corsa), I give LEGO a thumbs up for releasing a set with a female racer for the Ferrari 488 GT3. But also the engineers who were involved in the making of this car. I was impressed! Highly recommended!

THE REVIEW:

Back in 2011, LEGO introduced the “Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu” theme.

Originally planned to last through 2013 and the successor to LEGO’s Ninja theme which lasted from 1998-2000, the theme back then was ninja vs. samurai in feudal Japan.

With “Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu”, LEGO was able to have a series featuring six teenage ninjas: Kai, Jay, Cole, Zane, Nya and Lloyd and under the tutelage of their master, Sensei Wu, protect the land from the evil Serpentine, Stone Army, Nindroids and many more.

The LEGO series continues 8-years-later since it was introduced and had a TV series and also had a movie released back in 2017.

No doubt a popular theme for LEGO, one of the things that have captivated me is the traditional Japanese architecture in LEGO form and also the huge sets that were simply amazing to build and see.

From “THE LIGHTHOUSE SIEGE” (featuring a light house), the Ninjago movie “FINAL FLIGHT OF DESTINY’S BOUNTY” (featuring a ship), the Ninjago movie “TEMPLE OF THE ULTIMATE WEAPON”, the Ninjago movie “NINJAGO CITY” (A building) and “THE TEMPLE OF AIRJITZU” were the top 5 releases in my opinion.

And now there is a sixth, the “MONASTERY OF SPINJITZU”.  Literally, a training ground for our Ninjago warriors and is part of the NINJAGO LEGACY line as featured in season 1 of the animated series.

What we have is a set that takes the feudal Japanese architecture and brings a LEGO flavor and what a joy was this to build.  I love the fact that the entrance gate has a torii, a sakura tree, I love the red, white and black color scheme and for the most part, it’s an awesome looking set that does not cost over a hundred dollars like the other awesome Ninjago sets I mentioned.

The set comes with EIGHT minifigures: Wu, Jay, Nya, Zane, Cole, Lloyd, Kai and one antagonist, Wyplash.

You have a temple for Sensei Wu that looks so cool with awesome LEGO parts, with a few I’ve never seen before.  When built, you can’t help but realize how awesome the engineering was in terms of creating this set.  You have hidden areas for training such as a sword that pops out of the floor, a catapult, training section that spins, actually multiple areas that your ninjas can train and spin.

While there area  lot of parts, I do recommend working on a light surface because there are a lot of small black LEGO bricks and parts.  While the set was not difficult to build, due to the bigger parts, there are also a lot of smaller parts that can easily be lost, so definitely work on a lighter surface if possible.

For children, the “Monastery of Spinjitzu” may be a challenge to put together, but it would be a great project for parents and children to work together.  The interactivity of the monastery for ninja training is another big selling point and that fact that it comes with eight minifigures already is a major value as well.  Especially if you are looking for a set that features all Ninjago ninja characters and Master Wu!

Overall, this set based on price, enjoyability, build and look… it’s a 5 out of 5! Highly recommended for “LEGO Ninjago” fans!
