Hailed as one of today’s most gifted young comedians, Jo Koy shows you why in his very-own Comedy Central special, Don’t Make Him Angry. Brandishing his energetic physicality and wacky impersonations, Jo Koy explores America’s obsession with road rage, recalls some of the worst places he’s ever had to visit while touring, and shares some of his most intimate family moments. Whether you’re already a fan or you’re just looking for the next great comic, pick up this DVD. We promise: it’ll leave your ribs hurting long after the show ends.

Jo Koy (Joseph Glenn Herbert) is one of the comedians growing in popularity in America.  A Filipino American comedian who began doing stand up back in 1994, Jo has opened for Dave Chappelle, Mike Epps, Carlos Mencia and Snoop Dogg.  And through all the persistent work that he has done in the last 15 years, Koy becomes the first Asian American comedian to get the Comedy Central treatment with a new DVD titled “DONT’ MAKE HIM ANGRY”.

His first Comedy Central DVD titled “DON’T MAKE HIM ANGRY” includes the following chapters:

  1. INTRO
  2. ALABAMA
  3. FUCK FRANCE
  4. PHELPS
  5. ROAD RAGE
  6. MY MOM AND WII
  7. TING! TING!
  8. GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT
  9. BIRTH
  10. WOMEN MAKE LOVE
  11. GIFT FROM GOD

In this special performance, Koy talks about how he had to work all these small clubs before getting to perform in NYC.  One of the stops includes Alabama where he felt he was the only non-white in the building and then having to go overseas and having a difficult time in France.

But the performance starts to hit into high gear when Koy discusses Michael Phelps beating the French and how he became hooked on swimming because of Phelps as he imitates the gold medalist.  But where Koy starts to shine is when he starts building his comedy around his mother and speaking like his mother and having difficulty pronouncing the “F’s” as “P’s”.  And how his mother became hooked on the Nintendo Wii and became a shit talker.

And continuing the laughter with his son who likes to play with his “Ting! Ting!” and just never stops.  By the time the performance winds down, Koy then goes into a bit of uncomfortable territory as he talks about the love he has for the vagina and showing his appreciation for women to give birth, how woman make love and of course, the G-spot.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

The performance is well-lit and overall video quality is good.  As for editing, there are a good number of camera angles which include a camera on the side of the audience over looking the stage, a front camera spotlighting Jo Koy and editing gives your eyes time to focus on the talent without any sporadic or dizzying edits.

As for audio quality, audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and Dolby Digital Stereo.  I tested the DVD on my home theater 7.2 system and the laughter of the audience really comes out nice and clear.  Actually, Joe Koy’s delivery is quite clear coming from the front and center channels.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The following special features are included on the DVD:

  • COMEDY CENTRAL PRESENTS: JO KOY -  A 21-minute episode of “Comedy Central Presents” starring Jo Koy in NYC.  Similar jokes from his concert performances but of course different material.  Koy is hilarious and enjoyable but not as angry as compared to the DVD version where he does go off.  The same can be said on this edition from “Comedy Central Presents”.  I’m pretty happy that Comedy Central included this special on the special features.
  • APL.DE.AP PERFORMANCE – (2:53) A live performance by BLACK EYED PEAS rapper APL.DE.AP.
  • INTERVIEW WITH DONNIE “CRUMBS” COUNTS – (2:41) Interview by Jo Koy with B-Boy dancer Donnie “CRUMBS” COUNTS.
  • INTERVIEW WITH MOY RIVAS – (2:27) Interview by Jo Koy with B-Boy dancer Moy Rivas.
  • HORSE WITH MOY RIVAS – (1:33) Jo Koy playing HORSE against Moy Rivas.
  • INTERVIEW WITH LITTLE JO – (1:10) Jo Koy interviewing his son Jo on why he cut his bangs.
  • JO KOY DANCE MOVES – (:20) Jo Koy dancing like a robot and telling the videographer not to put it in the DVD.
  • JO KOY – ONE ON ONE – (21:29) A special feature featuring an interview with Jo Koy and interviewed on the following topics below:

– CHILDHOOD
– SCHOOL DAYS
– FIRST GIG
– WORST GIG
– FIRST TIME ON TV
– DIY
– DEF JAM

I have to say that I really enjoyed Jo Koy’s performance for “DON’T MAKE HOME ANGRY”, his comedy is definitely upfront and in your face as he goes into being in Alabama, not really enjoying being around the French, watching Michael Phelps in the Olympics but where Koy shines is when he gets into the comedy about his family.

As a Filipino American, just watching Koy talk about his mother and her mannerisms when she talks was just hilarious because as a Filipino American, I’ve had family members who had similar mannerisms as Koy’s mother.  But his discussion about how his mother enjoys playing Nintendo Wii, especially imitating his mother’s way of speaking, really started to get the crowd going.  Of course,  its when he starts talking about his son and his obsession of playing with his penis was when the crowd went nuts (this’ll make even more sense if you have a son).

Of course, Koy is a comedian that is not afraid to touch upon topics that will definitely get a reaction.  His blunt rant on “Fuck France” to his appreciation for women and their vagina definitely made the audience feel a bit squeamish.  But I felt the comedy routine had its ups and downs.  The final segment of the appreciation of the vagina just seem to fall flat and after coming off a comedic high with the jokes about his mother and his son’s “Ting! Ting!”, I was expecting a much better finish to his routine.

But overall, the DVD was pretty enjoyable.  Although, I’m sure some may wonder why he interviews B-boys for his special features.  But Koy’s comedy is about that bluntness, that anger and it defines his style of comedy and what makes his performances so unexpected.  He’s upfront, direct and he has fun doing it.

Also, I have to add that I thought it was pretty cool to see the Black Eyed Peas APL.DE.AP (also Filipino) and have the performance as part of the special features.

If anything, it’s really good to see Comedy Central give an Asian American comedian some exposure through this DVD.  They did a great job with Russell Peter’s “Red, White and Brown” release earlier this year and  it’s great to see Jo Koy get very good treatment for his DVD release as well.  So, hope to see other notable Filipino American comedians (hint: Rex Navarrete, Ron Josol and Edwin San Juan) get the special Comedy Central treatment as well someday.

“DON’T MAKE HIM ANGRY” was an enjoyable, hilarious DVD, good picture quality, good editing and also fun special features.  If there was one thing that I wish that Comedy Central did with more of their DVD releases is to have more DVD and CD combo releases.  They did it with the Russell Peters release and it would have been a great addition to listen to Jo Koy on a long commute, so hopefully we see more DVD/CD combos.

Otherwise, Jo Koy’s “DON’T MAKE HIM ANGRY” is a fun and enjoyable comedy DVD.  Definitely check it out!
