When a brilliant but trigger-happy detective (played by martial arts powerhouse Max Zhang) is outsmarted by a serial killer, he pays a high price for his momentary lapse in judgment. Robbed of both his fiancée and his job, he soon spirals out of control and goes back to what he knows best: fighting. Unbeknownst to him, a serendipitous reunion with an old rival (Brazilian mixed martial artist Anderson Silva) may be the key to unlocking the truth about his fiancee s disappearance and to apprehending the killer.

From Fruit Chan, director of “The Midnight After”, “Three Husbands”, “Made in Hong Kong” and “Durian Durian” comes his action film “The Invincible Dragon”.

Co-written with Kee-To Lam (known for “The Bride with White Hair”, “The Swordsman”, “Three Husbands”). the film stars Jin Zhang (“The Grandmaster”, “Pacific Rim: Uprising”, “Ip Man 3”) and former UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva.

And now the film is coming to Blu-ray courtesy of Well Go USA Entertainment.

The film begins with an introduction to when Kowloon was a young boy and how he saw something in the ocean and swam to meet a five headed dragon.  The dragon has since become part of him and now sports dragon tattoos on his chest.

We see Kowloon in a vat of water along with another man as gangsters threaten to kill him.  When the police arrive, the gangsters try to kill Kowloon but Kowloon shows his amazing martial arts skills and beats them, except their leader.

This leads to a chase and when Kowloon captures the gang leader who tried to kill him, instead of arresting the gangster, Kowloon shoots the gangster, badly injuring him.

Unfortunately, because he made the police look bad, Kowloon is sent to another area to work at another police station and his girlfriend, also a female police officer goes with him.

But at this new location, there is a serial killer targeting female police officers and numerous women have been killed.

Kowloon’s boss can’t allow this serial killer to get out of hand, so he is given one month to catch the killer.

While Kowloon plans a trap to catch the serial killer, they get distracted when they chase after the wrong target, leaving everyone in the police van a target for the serial killer.  As Kowloon’s girlfriend screams for help, once the police arrive, their officer is found dead and Hajime’s girlfriend is not there.

As Kowloon goes to chase after the serial killer, he tries to grab a bag which has blood coming out of it.  As he tries to catch the serial killer, he is shot.

For over a year, the serial killings have stopped and as for Kowloon, he is no longer a cop. Having given up and has spent his time searching for his girlfriend which he hopes that she’s alive.

When a female police officer in Macau is killed, Hong Kong police are now investigating.  But because they are in Macau, the Macau police could care less about working with Hong Kong police and with the Macau police not willing to share information, there is one person they hope that can help them… Kowloon.

But when they go to find Kowloon, they are shocked to find out that Kowloon is no longer the same man.

He fights in underground fighting tournaments but he has lost his edge.  He looks worse for wear and barely anyone can recognize him any longer.

When they tell him that the serial killer is back, at first Kowloon is not interested because all he wants is to find his girlfriend.  But he is eventually convinced to assist Hong Kong police.

I have mixed feelings after watching “Invincible Dragon”.

It’s a film that tries to be many things at one.  From it’s mystical use of dragons, a crime drama, a martial arts film, a comedy, and the problem is that this is a drama that is supposed to be a major police drama of trying to catch a serial killer.

And while it’s great to see Jin Zhang and former UFC fighter Anderson Silva fight it off, the build up of fighting between the two men gets exciting but then the pacing suddenly changes.

For me, that was disappointing.

Take a Bruce Lee film or even a Jet Li film as an example, the fight is the most important part.  The build up to the finale, but in the case of “Invincible Dragon”, was the way how the fight ended necessary?

And unfortunately, there are scenes where the acting was just not that great.

For the most part, despite the films many flaws, as a popcorn action film “Invincible Dragon” is entertaining and the dramatic portions and martial arts action will keep you interested.  Considering there are two antagonists in the film, there are fight scenes that are no doubt cool to watch.

So, if you are wanting to watch a martial arts popcorn action film that will keep you busy for a little over two hours, then definitely give “Invincible Dragon” a try!
