What is “Haven”?

In 2010, a one hour special loosely based on Stephen King’s novel “The Colorado Kid” titled “Haven” aired on the SyFy channel which would eventually lead to 13-episode series created by Jim Dunn and Sam Ernst.

And now in 2013, the SyFy series will be airing the fourth season of”Haven” on September 13th, while the third season will be released on DVD courtesy of Entertainment One.

“Haven” is a series that revolves around FBI Special Agent Audrey Parker (portrayed by Emily Rose, “ER”, “Jericho” and voice of Elena Fisher in the “Uncharted” video games) who travels to Haven, Maine working on a case.  But once she arrives, problems hit Haven as “The Troubles”, a plague of supernatural afflictions that occurred in the city once before, has now returned.  But it appears that Audrey’s past may be connected to Haven.

Audrey is helped by Haven PD officer Nathan Wuornos (portrayed by Lucas Bryant, “The Vow”, “Faux Baby”) and a local smuggler, Duke Crocker (portrayed by Eric Balfour, “Skyline”, “Hell Ride”, “What Women Want”), who has the power to stop the Troubles but using the power makes him a pay a hefty price.

Journalists Vince and Dave Teagues suspect that Audrey Parker may be the Colorado Kid, a case from 1983.  And as mysterious cases happen in Haven, Audrey believes that her past has a connection to Haven and she may be linked to the mysteries of the town.

In the second season finale, Audrey was brutally kidnapped, meanwhile Nathan has been warned to not have a relationship with Audrey and Nathan finds out that Duke’s destiny is to kill the Troubled people.

In season three, while Audrey is kidnapped, she is asked by the Colorado Kid and they find a message to be careful for the Hunter.  Meanwhile, more strange events happen in Haven, Audrey receives information about the Colorado Kid’s real identity.  What will she find out?

Also, what happens when Audrey learns information about a 27-year phenomenon that would affect her life and the lives of those living in Haven?

And who is stealing the skin and body parts of people in Haven?

The main characters of “Haven” are:

  • Audrey Parker – The main protagonist.  She believed she was an FBI agent who quite the bureau to deal with The Troubles.  But she has an unexplained past connection to Haven.  She has feelings for Nathan but also has feelings for Duke.
  • Nathan Wuornos – A member of Haven PD who is helping Audrey deal with the Troubles.  The Troubles have removed his sense of touch.  He does not trust Duke and often thinks the worst of him.
  • Duke Crocker – Haven’s smuggler who is always in trouble.  He is also a friend of Audrey who helps her out quite often (and even saved her life many times), despite Nathan not wanting him around her.  He has the power to stop the Troubles but by using this power, it comes with a price.  He is also attracted to Audrey.
  • Dwight Hendrickson – Helps the group clean up the effects of the Troubles and has a connection to the Guard.  He is Troubled (attracts bullets).
  • Vince Teagues – The artist and editor of Haven Herald which he runs with his brother Dave.
  • Dave Teagues – The photographer and editor of the Haven Herald which he runs with his brother Vince.
  • Tommy Bowen – A Boston detective who came to Haven looking for the killer of his partner.  Due to trouble in Boston, he chooses to become a police officer in Haven.  He is skeptical of the Troubles.
  • Claire Callahan – A psychiatrist who works with Troubled people and observing Audrey.
  • Jordan McKee – A waitress and the Gun & Rose Cafe working for the Guard.  She wears gloves because her touch can cause intense pain.  She has feelings for Nathan.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“Haven: The Complete Third Season” is presented in Widescreen (1:78:1). For the most part, picture quality for “Haven” is very good for DVD but as expected for a DVD release, you can see a bit of compression but nothing that would hurt your viewing of the film and for the most part, for most viewers, this is a non-issue for a DVD release.

“Haven” is presented in English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound with subtitles in English SDH. As a drama series, audio is primarily a dialogue-driven track with some use of scenery ambiance for surround channels. For the most part, audio is very appropriate for this style of series and dialogue is clear and understandable.

It’s important to emphasize that if you want the best picture quality and audio, “Haven: The Complete Third Season” is also available on Blu-ray.

EXTRAS:

Included is a 16-page comic book “Haven: After the Storm” which features a storyline of what happened right after the season three finale to Nathan and Dwight.

The third season of “Haven” definitely was an improvement over the second season in terms of storyline and how many trippy and unusual situations happening in the small town of Haven.

Dogs turning to humans, organ sucking  human, time travel and plenty of twists and turns along the way, making the series quite fascinating but also exciting!

But what I enjoyed about this season was the addition to the cast.  Great to see WWE’s Edge have a more prominent role and Bree Williamson was a welcomed addition as Claire Callahan.  The additional characters for this first half of the season brought a more upbeat feeling to the series, especially with the darker elements featured this season.    But the biggest revelation was Audrey’s connection to Haven and the 27-year cycle and to see this love triangle between Audrey, Nathan and Duke starting to become much more interesting.

And I best stop there because I don’t want to spoil season three.

While the opening was OK (it’s one thing to have strange occurrences, but to throw in aliens/UFO abductions, as an opening episode, it was OK.  The abduction of Audrey was done well but I’m enjoying the direction of where this series is head with the additional characters and this recurring storyline around Audrey.  With each revelation, there are even more questions that linger and I can only hope with season four, they keep the creativity of the series going!

As for the acting, I felt that the cast had good chemistry and were more comfortable in their role.  Emily Rose, Eric Balfour and Lucas Bryant did a wonderful job.  But it’s the production design and makeup that help make the series feel bigger and better.

As for the DVD, picture and audio quality is good but for those wanting better quality in HD, will want to opt for the Blu-ray release.  As for special features, you get numerous audio commentary, lengthy featurettes such as the “Haven” documentary and the New York Comic Con panel, cast interviews, the “Escape to Haven” webisodes and more!
