“Overfly” is the second single from Haruna Luna and the ending theme for the anime series “Sword Art Online”.  Featuring three solid tracks and well-written lyrics that make you think, definitely an improvement over the first single.  Recommended!

Anime fan and gothic lolita fashion-loving Haruna Luna (note: Her official name used by the label is Luna Haruna) is back with her second CD single “Overfly”.

The song is featured as the second ending theme to “Sword Art Online” and recently debuted at #7, a pretty solid showing since her debut single “Sora wa Takaku Kaze wa Utau” (which was used for anime series “Fate/Zero”).

A big anime and music fan, by the time she entered junior high, she became obsessed with gothic lolita manga characters and Western clothes. By the third year of junior high, Haruna Luna was auditioning for the Internet radio program of “Renta Magica” and won the opportunity to perform the opening theme.

And from that point on, her life would immediately change. Haruna Luna would become an imoto-kei amateur model for “Kera” fashion magazine and modeling for “Marui” but with anime as her passion, she would become popular for competing and becoming a finalist for the fourth All-Japan Anime Song Grand Prix.

With this new found popularity, she was signed to SME Records.

The single I am reviewing is a digital version supplied to us by her record label.   So, I can’t comment on the CD insert, but there are two versions available, a normal version and a version which comes with a CD + Blu-ray.

The single begins with “Overfly”, an upbeat track with a good blend of rock melodies and beautiful vocals.  The song is about one making a wish about being someone you really like and a feeling of unstoppable emotions that one feels everyday.  Wondering if it’s too late, she reaches her hand higher and higher and embracing the emotions in her heart.  Despite holding one person’s hand for a brief moment, before letting go…memories are left in her heart and she feels connected to that person forever.

The second track is titled “Inori” (which translates to “prayer”), a beautiful ballad.  About how one person is grateful to meet a person in this world, to fall in love with that person who became the reason to live and that no matter how much that you love that person so much that it hurts, you can only pray and hope that no matter how you can’t reach that person, someday that person’s dream will come true.

The third track is titled “Mahou no Shiro. Shinjitsu no Shomotsu.” (which translates to “Castle of Magic.  Book of Truth”) and is an upbeat pop/rock track featuring synth and electric guitars.  The song seems like a song from “Harry Potter”, but it’s about a magical book that asks the person “Are you prepared to know all?”.  The person holds that magical book in their hands, in the castle within the deep forest.  And as the person looks into the book to find out the reason of their disappearance, the reality was the perosn was dead and the words read “In order to save me, you sacrificed your soul” and one remembering all that has happened and one long tear that fell right after.

The final fourth track is the instrumental version of “Overfly”.

Overall, this is a wonderful second CD single for Haruna Luna.  Featuring three solid tracks, it’ll be interesting to see where her development as an artist will go.  Right now, her two singles received the anime tie-in, but for her next single, it will be interesting to see if she will continually be promoted alongside an anime series or release different styles of music.  I will say that I enjoyed the songs on this single compared to the first and loved the lyrics for all three tracks.  Especially for “Inori” and “Mahou no Shiro. Shinjitsu no Shomotsu.”.
