“Fanboy & Chum Chum” fans…have you been waiting for more episodes on DVD this summer?

Well, the wild and wacky duo are back in a new DVD titled “Fanboy & Chum Chum: Brain Freeze” which revolve around episodes featuring the duo and friends (or enemies) at the Frosty Mart!

So, for those not familiar with the series… What is “Fanboy and Chum Chum”?

In 2009, a new CG animated series was unveiled on Nickelodeon titled “Fanboy and Chum Chum” created by Eric Robles and produced by Frederator Studios.

The animated series is based on a short from Frederator’s Random! Cartoons called “Fanboy ” and premiered in November 6, 2009 and drew in 5.8 million viewers.

Each episode of “Fanboy and Chum Chum” features two mini-episodes which revolve around two hardcore fans of sci-fi and fantasy who live in the Fanlair, a water tower in the town of Galaxy Hills. With a wild imagination, both Fanboy and Chum Chum wear their underwear outside of their costumes and go on various adventures.

The main characters of “Fanboy & Chum Chum” are:

  • Fanboy – A hardcore fan of comic books, sci-fi and action figures. Fanboy sports the green unitard and a purple cowl. He has an active imagination and loves to have fun with his best friend Chum Chum.
  • Chum Chum – Fanboy’s best friend and his sidekick. Full of energy and enthusiasm, Chum Chum sports a black eye mask and gloves, as well as an orange and yellow uniform.
  • Kyle – The insecure classmate of Fanboy who is a wizard. He despises the two because they are not intelligent but in truth, he really wants to be their friend. Known on the show for his big teeth and braces.
  • Boogregard “Boog” Shlizetti – A short-tempered bully who is the antagonist of the show who is obsessed with the video game Chimp Chomp. He works at the Frosty Mart.
  • Leonard “Lenny” Flynn-Boyle– The junior manager at Frosty Mart.  He is often stressed out when Fanboy and Chum Chum come to the store.

The episodes featured on the “Fanboy & Chum Chum: Brain Freeze” DVD are:

  • Brain Freeze – Fanboy and Chum Chum drink too much Frosty Freeze and its side effect has left the duo wondering what they did with their underwear.
  • Berry Sick – From Episode 5: Fanboy and Chum Chum’s try to help Berry, the ice monster but end up wanting to lick him.
  • Refill Madness – From Episode 14: Lenny and Boog plan to steal Fanboy and Chum Chum’s collectible cup (which gives them free, unlimited drinks).
  • The Frosty Bus – From Episode 15: The boys want to buy a Frosy Freeze Freeze from the Frost Mart’s bus but Boog won’t let them have any.
  • Jingle Fever – From Episode 22: Lenny tris to stop Fanboy and Chum Chum from winning a million Frosty Bucks jingle contest.
  • Back from the Future – From Episode 29: Lenny goes back in time to stop Fanboy & Chum Chum from having their first Frosty Freezy Freeze.
  • Norse-ing Around – From Episode 10: Fanboy and Chum Chum meet a viking named Thorvald, who they must help bring back to Valhala.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“Fanboy & Chum Chum: Brain Freeze” is presented in full screen, Dolby Digital – English Stereo.

I have to say that “Fanboy & Chum Chum” is one of the coolest animated shows on television right now. It’s one thing to have crazy and unique character designs but to have these characters animated with so much detail for a TV series, you just don’t see that (partly because it’s expensive).

But for the case of “Fanboy & Chum Chum”, I like the detail in the characters and special effects. You can see the detail in the eyes, Kyle’s hair, even the backgrounds such as walls show off cracks and wear. This series is definitely one of the better looking CG animated series on TV right now.

As for the series, it’s presented in Dolby Digital Stereo and audio is clear and understandable.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“Fanboy & Chum Chum: Brain Freeze” comes with the following special features:

  • Brain Freeze: Original Animatics – (11:13) Featuring the animatic/sketches and the final cut together.  Get to know how the series was created.

“Fanboy & Chum Chum: Brain Freeze” was definitely a more humorous and crazy DVD over its last release which I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted my son to watch this show because it had some situations that seemed more appropriate for older children.

But with this latest DVD release, I found the episodes to be much more accessible and entertaining.  And because the theme is situated around the Frosty Mart and the fact that it is summer time, children can relate with our wacky duo of wanting a cold drink, especially going crazy when it comes to the Frosty Freeze machine.

All seven episodes are quite fun and while the last DVD featured the duo’s frienemy Kyle, with “Brain Freeze”, the episodes focus more on Lenny and Boog and how irritated they get when Fanboy and Chum Chum come to the store and we get to see how far the two would go in trying to make sure they stop coming to the store.

Needless to say, there are a lot of crazy antics, hilarious moments and for the most part, the DVD is quite entertaining for children and even adults.

My son has been clamoring over “Fanboy & Chum Chum” for a year now and I had no idea what he was talking about? But watching this series with him, I can definitely see the allure of the series for children, especially young boys.

The fact that you have kids pretending to be superheroes, wearing their underwear outside of their pants and having an active imagination. Of course, for Fanboy and Chum Chum, they take their imagination to the highest level with everyday life becoming an adventure for them.

I have to say that this series is vibrant but the characters are definitely one of the weirdest characters I have seen in animated children’s series and because these characters behave like they do in normal life, is actually quite unusual. But I suppose that is the charm of the series, despite their antics and how they carry themselves, the viewer doesn’t question it. They don’t question why Chum Chum, a much younger boy is in the same class of Fanboy. If anything, a series not to overly think and analyze, you just watch and enjoy.

For parents who are wondering if this series is safe for their young children, for one, if you want a series for younger children that deals with adventures and wild imagination, then for younger children I recommend “The Backyardigans” because “Fanboy & Chum Chum” is not an educational series. Also, these young children are often goofing off, hanging out at the Frosty Mart and doing whatever on their own while wearing their underwear outside of their clothing. Unlike “The Backyardigans” which is definitely for children, you can tell the difference that these kids are acting out their adventures via their imagination and know it’s not real. In the case of “Fanboy & Chum Chum”, these two characters don’t have a realistic lifestyle afterward. This is how they are. They are odd individuals.

As for the DVD, “Brain Freeze” features the animatic for the episode “Brain Freeze” which was cool.  Typically, Nickelodeon tends to skimp on special features but so far, they have provided them for “Fanboy and Chum Chum”.

“Fanboy & Chum Chum” is definitely a animated series that looks good when it comes to the CG quality for a TV series, it also is quite unusual but I can see the fanboy theme of the series to be quite subjective to the viewer. Some will find it hilarious, others may find it too unusual for their tastes.

This time around, I found the series much more amusing and fun.  And for my son, he absolutely loved it.

Overall, if you are a fan of the “Fanboy & Chum Chum” series, then definitely check this DVD out.
