Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray, which I am reviewing in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.

DC’s “Legends of Tomorrow” has no doubt evolved in its first seasons.

When I have to describe the series to others, I tend to call it America’s “Dr. Who”, whereas Sara Lance (White Canary) is the leader of a group of individuals who time travel along with her.  Taking on aliens and demons and each season, viewers get something new (with its changing cast).

With the last season finale of “DC’ s  Legends of Tomorrow”, Sara Lance and friends go out to a bar and she says on camera that she plans to propose to her girlfriend, Ava Sharpe.  But right at the end while everyone is drunk and headed home, she is beamed aboard a UFO and is kidnapped without her fellow Legends knowing what has happened.

And here we are with season six, and as for this season of “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”, the characters are as follows:

  • Sara Lance/White Canary (portrayed by Caity Lotz) – A former League of Assassins and the leader of the Legends and captain of the Waverider.
  • Mick Rory/Heatwave – An arsonist and career criminal who uses a heat gun to burn anything.
  • Nate Heywood/Steel – A historian from Star City and the grandson of Commander Steel who can also transformer himself to steel-form.
  • Zari Tomaz – A computer hacker from the year 2042 who has areokinetic powers thanks to her mysterious amulet.  Due to what happened in season 4, the future changed and Zari was replaced by her brother Behrad, while the new future produces socialite Zari Tarazi, sister of Behrad.  While the original Zari lives within a totem that both siblings possess.
  • Ava Sharpe – The Director of the Time Bureau and is in a romantic relationship with Sara Lance. Later revealed to be a clone #12 from the year 2213.
  • John Constantine – An English magician, occult detective and con man turned supernatural detective.
  • Astra Logue – Daughter of Alex Logue and the late Natalie Logue, a childhood friend of John Constantine.
  • Behrad Tarzi – Zari’s younger brother who was a vigilante with a magical amulet who was killed by Argus in 2042.  He replaced the original Zari when the timeline changed after season 4.
  • Esperanza “Spooner” Cruz (portrayed by Lisseth Chavez) – A young woman who has been hardened emotionally after her mother was kidnapped by aliens.
  • Gary Green – A former agent of the Time Bureau and the ex-lover of John Constantine who answers directly to director Ava Sharpe.
  • Gideon – The artificial intelligence of the Waverider.

The writers of “DC Legend’s of Tomorrow” found an interesting way to keep the storyline fresh for season six but also showcasing more storylines that center around character development.

With this latest season, I liked it a lot because each character has something going on and the development of these characters were quite wonderful for this season. I noticed a lot of new writers involved and they brought some fresh energy to the series.

With that being said, there was also a few reveals on social media and news articles of certain characters who would not be returning as series regulars.  Which I’ll touch upon during my review.

First, Sara Lance (portrayed by Caity Lotz) was shown happy and preparing to marry Ava.  But was beamed and kidnapped on a UFO and we learn in episode 1 that she is being held prisoner in a UFO by aliens and it was all orchestrated by Bishop (portrayed by Raffi Barsoumian), who is the person responsible for creating the Ava clones.  But she’s not alone, we have a major reveal in terms of the character Gary Green (portrayed by Adam Tsekhman).

Needless to say, there is no doubt that Sara Lance is a big part of the show but with her being separated from the group, we have a storyline focusing on her, while the other storylines focus on the other cast members.

We get to see a lot of Ava Sharpe (portrayed by Jes Macallan), we get to see her go through so many emotions because the woman she loves is gone.  But you get to see many more Ava’s this season!

Season vet, Dominic Purcell made a lot of noise when he tweeted that he quit the show but then revealed that he will come back periodically.  Purcell would later write, that he was leaving the series on a full time basis,” but that he would come back “periodically with a handshake deal with my boss Phil Klemmer.”

Purcell wrote, “I have and always have had a tremendous relationship with the Bosses and the studio @warnerbrostv…My wording was aggressive in tone because sometimes I get frustrated and annoyed [sic] it’s been a long long heavy year locked up in #Vancouver for 9 months without going home. Who doesn’t and who hasn’t lashed out. Im f***in human. So for god sake chill on”.

Needless to say, when Purcell wrote this, it saddened me because not only was his character, Mick Rory, the show’s resident bad ass, he was also the show’s comic relief.  But similar to a “Dr. Who” series, where the doctor always has a different assistant each season, aside from Sara Lance, the show has seen many of its original cast members leave (and return from time to time) and new talent being brought in.

The hard thing is when you get tied to these characters for so long, it’s tough because “DC Legend’s of Tomorrow” cast is like a family that works well together.  Great chemistry.  But yet knowing, part of its success, compared to other series, is the fact that they bring new characters to keep the show fresh and entertaining.

As for Purcell’s character Mick Rory, Mick has a key role and I don’t want to spoil it but let’s say, that we see Mick in his most fatherly role yet!

Probably the most interesting character that I found was Tala Ashe’s role as Zari Tomaz and Zari Tarazi.  As the original Zari disappeared after the timeline changes at the end of season four, Zari Tarazi became a socialite who has a relationship with John Constantine.  Meanwhile, Steel is still sad because he sees Zari with Constantine, and knowing the Zari he loved is stuck within the totem.

The sixth season explores the relationship between Zari and Constantine and we get to see Tala Ashe really showcase her acting and singing skills this season.

Another sad news that was announced during the season was that John Constantine (portrayed by Matt Ryan) would be leaving the show.  Constantine is a warlock and this season, we see him at his most desperate.  And he plays a pivotal role this season.  As for actor Matt Ryan, while characters leaving the show typically means the actor is leaving the show as well, this is not the case, as Matt Ryan will be back on “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” season seven, but as the eccentric scientist from the early 20th century named Dr. Gwyn Davies.

I’m so happy to get to see more of Astra Logue (portrayed by Olivia Swann).  She came out a bit strong in season five, but now we get to see another side to Astra this time around, not just her connection to John Constantine but her trying to be a team player, and not be so much of a bad ass.

Because this season introduces a new bad ass, and that’s Esperanza “Spooner” Cruz (portrayed by Lisseth Chavez).  A person who was abducted by aliens and is distrust of society and has been devising tech to fight against the aliens.  Somehow, she can communicate and her alien’s thoughts as well!

With that being said, I’m sure there are those who miss the DC Universe connection with superheroes and supervillains in Legends but 2021 is a season where a lot of the DC series are separating from that “Arrowverse”, without the crossover shows and such, but we do get something written in dialogue in reference to characters such as Barry Allen’s name mentioned.

But a lot of the DC series are focused on their world and their characters considering the “Arrow” is no more and “Supergirl” has ended.

While the seventh series has begun airing, as a long time viewer of this series,  “Legends of Tomorrow” has changed quite a bit since its first season and the season has established itself as a series with a revolving door of main characters who come and go.  I use the “Dr. Who” reference because of the time travel, the rotating door of characters but also the action and humor.  But where Dr. Who focuses on its small cast, “DC Legends of Tomorrow”, has always been an ensemble cast and this season, writers found a way to make stories with each character involved.

And this season is one of my favorite seasons of “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” yet!   A little bit of time travel, occult, mythology and a series which manages to balance its action and humor. Recommended!
