DC’™s Legends of Tomorrow follows a group of misfit heroes as they fight, talk, and sing their way through protecting the timeline from aberrations, anomalies, and anything else that threatens to mess with history. After saving the world via the power of song and themed entertainment in last season’s finale, the Legends are major celebrities. Some struggle with the transition from lovable losers to A-list stars, while others start letting fame go to their heads. When a documentary crew decides to film the Legends in action, distracting them from their original mission, Astra Logue frees history’s most notorious villains from Hell in a bid for power. It’s up to the Legends to forgo fame and stop these reanimated souls (who they quickly dub “Encoresâ€) from wreaking havoc on the timeline, whether it’s Rasputin popping out of his coffin and trying to become an immortal tsar or Marie Antoinette (and her head) turning the French Revolution into a deadly, non-stop party.
DC’s “Legends of Tomorrow” has no doubt evolved in all four seasons.
The series began with Time Master Rip Hunter traveling back to 2016 to assemble a group of superheroes and supervillains to stop Vandal Savage and then taking on Damien Darhk.
For season three, we saw Rip Hunter creating the Time Bureau to replace the Time Masters’ Council and disbanding the Legends. But bringing them back together to help the bureau and protect the human history and going after Rio’s old enemy, Mallus, a demon who can manipulate time and space.
While the Legends eventually defeat Mallus, Constantine warned Sara that darkness is coming as Mallus was not the only demon released.
For season four of “Legends of Tomorrow” as the group must now fix their problem by traveling to various time periods in order to go after the demons and work with John Constantine to send the demons back to Hell and introduced a few new characters joining the group.
And here we are with season five, and as for this season of “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”, the characters are as follows:
- Sara Lance/White Canary – A former League of Assassins and the leader of the Legends and captain of the Waverider.
- Ray Palmer/Atom – (portrayed by Brandon Routh) A scientist, inventor and businessman and former CEO of Palmer Technologies who has a power-suit that allows him to change his size.
- Mick Rory/Heatwave – An arsonist and career criminal who uses a heat gun to burn anything.
- Nate Heywood/Steel – A historian from Star City and the grandson of Commander Steel who can also transformer himself to steel-form.
- Zari Tomaz – A computer hacker from the year 2042 who has areokinetic powers thanks to her mysterious amulet.
- Charlie – A shapeshifter who is a magical fugitive who is captured and helps the Legends.
- Ava Sharpe – The Director of the Time Bureau and is in a romantic relationship with Sara Lance. Later revealed to be a clone #12 from the year 2213.
- John Constantine – An English magician, occult detective and con man turned supernatural detective.
- Astra Logue – Daughter of Alex Logue and the late Natalie Logue, a childhood friend of John Constantine.
- Gary Green – A former agent of the Time Bureau and the ex-lover of John Constantine who answers directly to director Ava Sharpe.
- Mona Wu – A young woman who is obsessed with fantasy novels who went from delivering food to the Time Bureau to working for the Time Bureau.
- Gideon – The artificial intelligence of the Waverider.
- Nora Darhk – The daughter of the late Damien Darhk and Ruve Adams. Now a prisoner of the Time Bureau.

As the first episode of the season kicks off with the final episode of the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” DCU Arrowverse crossover, while the crossover has no doubt affected the worlds and impact on “Arrow”, “Flash”, “Supergirl” and “Black Lightning”, the question is how would it affect “Legends of Tomorrow” considering the group tends to travel to different timelines and different worlds.
But also how last season’s season finale led to Zari Tomaz disappearing being replaced by her brother Behrad Tarazi, who was a member of the Legends (and not her), and leading to search for Zari Tomaz (this gets a little confusing, so you’ll need to watch the episodes), as you will get two Zari’s (as this season introduces us to Zari Tarazi).
With season five, the crew are sent on more adventures through time, but also new changes with new characters to join the team and characters who will depart.
Now becoming main characters as part of group, such as Ava Sharpe, who was a member of the Time Bureau, now travels alongside the Legends. As well as Astra Logue, who now becomes a member of the Legends.
Announced prior to the season premiere was that series regular, Dr. Ray Palmer and recurring character, Nora Darhk would be leaving the show. But what other shocking goodbyes are in store for the season finale?
With adventures that would lead to confronting Bugsy Siegel , Marie Antoinette, Genghis Khan and William Shakespeare. But the primary storyline revolves around the “Loom of Fate” which has been scattered across the multiverse to give everyone free will.
So, with last season about capturing demons and this season is about finding the Loom of Fates, it’ll be interesting to see what will happen with season six.
While I’m happy to see John Constantine take a big part as a main character, the comedy of season five featuring Gary and Mona, has been shortened, as the two are primarily recurring characters but we do get to see both of them more towards the final three episodes.
With that being said, I’m sure there are those who miss the DC Universe connection with superheroes and supervillains in Legends and season five, the “Crisis of Infinite Earths” manages to find a way to integrate the characters to the Arrowverse more than ever. Which was great to see!
In fact, it was no doubt a wonderful crossover series that showed a lot of potential especially for Earth-Prime. But at the same time, with the novel coronavirus spread, unfortunately we have seen shortened seasons and also delay’s for upcoming seasons.
CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz announced that it has affected production and that there will not be a crossover slated for 2020 but possibly for the first or second quarter of 2021 and that the crossover will be confined to just two episodes slated to air on a Sunday night.
Many of the Arrowverse series are slated to return in 2021, while “Supergirl” and “Legends of Tomorrow” have been held until “midseason”, so we won’t see it return until spring 2021.
While “The Legends of Tomorrow” has changed quite a bit since its first season and the season has established itself as a series with a revolving door of main characters who come and go. It’s rather sad to see the certain characters who will will no longer return for season six, but at the same time, building upon something different and something new for season six.
One thing that remains consistent is how the writers manages to fit in a storyline for each character. Sara and Astra’s relationship, Ray and Nora, John Constantine and Astrid, Zari and Nate/Zari and John, Mick and Lita, etc. I’m glad that writers figured out how to incorporate more Mick this season, because with the way season four went, I wasn’t sure if writers didn’t know how to integrate the character into the show anymore.
But I will say that some of the departures that took place in season five, kind of bummed me out. But one thing that this series has taught me, with good writing and character development, the new characters may prove to be the fresh air that prevents things from getting stale. And “Legends of Tomorrow” is a series that rarely gets boring. So, I look forward to seeing what writers have planned for season six.
Overall, DC’s “Legends of Tomorrow” has become more of an ensemble adventure series. A little bit of time travel, occult, mythology and a series which manages to balance action and humor.
The fifth season features action, humor, more focus on character relationships but also delightful and entertaining series, no matter if characters are taking on zombies or whatever comes their way.
A fun, entertaining, humorous and action-packed season five! For those who have stuck with the series for this long will no doubt enjoy “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – The Complete Fifth Season”.
