Assassination Classroom: 365 Days’ Time (a J!-ENT Anime on Blu-ray Disc Review)

If you enjoyed the animated series of “Assassination Classroom”, while the animated film is a rehash of what one have watched before, there are enough newer scenes to keep fans happy and entertained.  While the film can be watched without knowing much of the series, I still do recommend watching the anime series or read the manga.  But overall, a solid animated film worth watching!

In Assassination Classroom the Movie 365 Days’ Time, the killer class is back in session—sort of. Relive every moment that made you laugh, cry, and kept you on the edge through the eyes of the top two students: Nagisa and Karma!

It’s been some time since Nagisa and Karma were a part of the assassination classroom. Like the rest of Class 3-E, they’ve grown and followed their own paths. But no matter how much time has passed, they’ll still remember their time with Koro Sensei and the lessons he taught them. Walking around their old classroom, the two former students reminisce about the time they spent in Class 3-E and the crazy events that went down. From the minute Koro Sensei first stepped into the classroom down to their final moments—this is a look back at the adventures of assassins in training!

In 2012, mangaka Yusei Matsui created the manga series “Assassination Classroom” (Ansatsu Kyoshitsu).

Matsui, who was known for the manga series “Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro” and also was a former assistant of mangaka, Yoshio Sawai, would eventually create one of the best selling manga series in the past few years.

Serialized in “Weekly Shonen Jump”, a total of 12 volumes have been collected into Tankobon format and the first volume has had over one million copies printed and was on the list for best-selling manga in 2013. Came second in Media Factory’s “Book of the Year” and won the #1 position for “2014 Kono Manga ga Sugoi!” voted by male readers for Takarajimasha.

The manga series would end with volume 21 and a 48-episode animated series would air in Japan, two live action-films, a gag anime series and an animated film titled “Ansatsu Kyōshitsu: 365-Nichi no Jikan” (Assassination Classroom: 365 Day’s Time).

And now the animated film was released in the U.S. courtesy of Funimation.

The animated film is set several years after the conclusion of the series.  Several years older, Nagisa Shiota and Karma Akabane return to the school where Class 3-E studied and both remembering Koro-sensei.

The film features a compilation of the major scenes from the animated series from when they met Koro-sensei up to their final moment with him and what transpired over the year and what he taught them.

What is “Assassination Classroom” about?

A powerful alien creature that destroyed 70% of the moon, making it a crescent moon forever. The alien has said that within a year, he will destroy the Earth but he does give mankind a chance to prevent it.

Having special speed and quick reflexes, with a number of tentacles like an octopus, the alien known as Koro-sensei, becomes a teacher for the lowly class 3-E at the prestigious Kunugigaoka Junior High School.

Government worker Tadaomi Karasuma tells the entire class 3-E what problems they are facing and how Koro-sensei will destroy the Earth. But the deal the alien made with the government and military is that if he is assassinated before the end of the year, he will spare Earth. So, Tadaomi Karasuma announces that the focus of class 3-E is to kill their homeroom teacher.

And Koro-sensei is hoping the students can do it… But can they?

EXTRAS

“Assassination Classroom: 365 Days’ Time” comes with a Blu-ray slipcover, the DVD, Blu-ray and Funimation Digital HD.

For “Assassination Classroom” fans, we have read or watched how the students within Class 3-E grown under Koro-sensei for a year.

Growing as friends, grow as assassins, even seeing their own respect for their alien teacher. And each time they have tried to assassinate Koro-sensei, they would lose, thanks to Koro-sensei’s super speed.  But part of what makes Koro-sensei so quick and powerful is the use of his tentacles. And through failure, the class have grown adept in their ways of assassination and he would let them know what they would have to work on to become better assassins but also better people.

Through the school year, they had gone on missions together, had to work things out with one another and work as a team.

One of Koro-sensei’s best students was Nagisa Shiota, he may seem weak and also feminine, but he is one of Koro-sensei’s top students and what will happen when Nagisa and Mr. Takaoka finally square off against each other once again.

One of the strongest students and quite deadly is Karma Akabane.  Quite rebellious and not good around people, he would become Nagisa’s good friend and rival.

After the final events which were featured on the anime and manga series, many have wondered what happened to Nagisa and Karma now that they are adults?

For the animated film “Assassination Classroom: 365 Days’ Time”, both former students of Class 3-E visit their old school and both men remember the past, what they learned from Koro-sensei but also how these two opposite people became good friends back then.

As they remember the past, the animated film takes us to many of the major moments in the series from how they first Koro-sensei to the final day with him.

Unlike compilation films with barely any new footage, I enjoyed “Assassination Classroom: 365 Days’ Time” for the fact that it provided some closure and also answers what happened to Nagisa and Karma years later?  The new footage was great for the fact that we see these two now older, different from their teenage years but it’s from what they learned from Koro-sensei and being part of a class that went through so much within their year of training.

For the most part, anyone can watch this animated film without watching the entire series.  Granted, one will miss out on awesome stories not featured in the animated film but people will get the gist of what transpired through the key scenes focused on and are included in the film.

As for the Blu-ray, the animated film looks magnificent in HD.   Colors are vibrant and characters are well-shaded, backgrounds feature better background details and as one can expect, the animated film looks much better compared to its TV series counterpart.

The Blu-ray comes with a video commentary with English dub ADR director Apphia Yu with Sonny Strait (voice of Koro-sensei) and Austin Tindle (voice of Karma), but unfortunately the two men go off on so many tangents that they barely discuss the animated film and are talking about food and a history of their career. Special features also include promo videos and trailers.

Overall, if you enjoyed the animated series of “Assassination Classroom”, while the animated film is a rehash of what one have watched before, there are enough newer scenes to keep fans happy and entertained.  While the film can be watched without knowing much of the series, I still do recommend watching the anime series or read the manga.  But overall, a solid animated film worth watching!
