From Aleksandr Boguslavskiy, the director of “Beyond the Edge” comes a Russian steampunk adventure starring Tinatin Dalakishvili, Gleb Bochkov, Rinal Mukhametov, Artyom Tkachenko and Ravshana Kurkova.

And now the film will be released on Blu-ray courtesy of Well Go USA.

The film begins with a young Abigail with her father (portrayed by Eddie Marsan), whom she is very close with.  When an epidemic hits their town, her father was taken away from the family when she was six years old.

Abigail (portrayed by Tinantin Dalakshivilli) has always held out hope that her father was still alive.

But when Abigail starts to investigate, she learns that there is something mysterious going on in the city and that the epidemic may not have happened at all and that her father has been leaving clues for her, in order to find him if anything happens.

But what is the truth about this mysterious illness that the government and agents are trying to eliminate?  And what is the truth about Abigail and her existence?

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“Abigail” is presented in 1080p 16:9 widescreen. The film looks very good in HD. Skintones look natural, picture quality had no signs of any blemishes.  A lot of shadowing and use of lighting and smoke, but for the most part, the film looks good in HD.

As for the lossless soundtrack, the film is presented in English DTS-HD MA 5.1 and dialogue and music come in crystal clear through the front channels, while crowd ambiance and action sequences, along with sci-fi elements can be heard in the surround channels.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“Abigail” comes with a trailer.

For those who love steampunk films, may enjoy this Russian steampunk action film “Abigail”.

The concept of the film is no doubt amusing.  A film about a city held hostage by its mysterious epidemic and agents tracking down those who test positive of infection are rounded up.

But in truth, the mysterious epidemic may have been a facade to keep the truth of what the city was once and the infected are but most importantly, the protagonist of the film being a person who is not a rebel, but something much more.

Without spoiling the film, I will say that the world of where “Abigail” takes place is amusing, the visual effects are really nicely done but the human relationships and drama seemed a bit forced.  If anything, thanks to the acting of Eddie Marsan, he helped carry this film and make it more interesting.

As mentioned, this is a Russian steampunk action film and it’s not in Russian, but in English and acting was OK.  If anything, I found myself immersed in the world filmmaker Aleksandr Bogslavskiy and staff were able to create.

But in someway, it seemed like a B movie with better visual effects.  I probably would have enjoyed it even more if it was presented in Russian vs. English, because then, the actors would probably feel a bit more relaxed in acting in their native language than English dialogue that seemed a bit off.

For the most part, “Abigail” is a popcorn steampunk action film!  Enjoy it for what it is, but don’t come to the film having high expectations.
