Nearly two decades of inactivity, the ’80s alternative rock band Unicorn reunites for their first single in 16-years titled “WAO!”. An awesome single for today’s generation with that Unicorn style!

In Japan, the band Unicorn will always be respected for their style of alternative rock music in the ’80s but where the band could have gone further in activity, the band would surprise people by its breakup during the band’s peak and singer, songwriter and musician turned producer, Tamio Okuda would go on to focus on solo and producer activities in the ’90s (his most successful was producing the music for female music duo Puffy).
With Okuda known as being one of the top musicians in Japan (voted #25 in HMV’s “Japan’s Top 100 Musician’s), many have hoped for a reunion and sure enough, Unicorn was reunited in 2009 and released their first single in 16 years titled “WAO!”.
“WAO!” would feature a churning electric guitar track with Okuda going crazy with the vocals, singing and screaming and giving Unicorn fans a single with a style that they remembered from the band. Definitely an awesome track with the electric guitar playing through the background and definitely an impressive return from the band.
The single was also released as a CD+DVD and the DVD portion features a 26-minute documentary titled “MOVIE 11 (Band Yaroze! Album Chanvre ga Dekiru Made Part 1)”. In the documentary, the band are interviewed about their return as a band and recording music together again.
As for the CD insert, included are the lyrics to “WAO!”, production credits and also information on the Unicorn live tour.
Overall, “WAO!” is a longtime coming. Many fans have wished and waited for Unicorn to reunite and for me, I thought it would have happened in the late ’90s not in 2009 but considering 16-years have passed since the group called it quits, “WAO!” is a single that still shows us that Okuda and the band members still have what it takes to rock and bring that style of music they were known for in ’80′s, for today’s generation of music fans. Definitely worth checking out!
