UKAWANIMATION! is the moniker used by multi-talented Naohiro Ukawa, a Japanese graphic designer (as a professor at Kyoto University of Art) , video artist , VJ and contemporary house artist.
Popular in Japan for his artistic drive and how he combines it with music, Naohiro Ukawa released his first CD single through the avex trax label titled “Wakusei no Portrait 5 Oku Man Gaso”, which he dedicates to camera and also features a collaboration with musician, singer and DJ Takyuu Ishino and actor Kenichi Hagiwara.
Suffice to say, this is experimentalism to the max. Many soundbytes, samples, harmonica and infused with contemporary house. It’s rather chaotic but in a good way and he manages to pull this single off.
The coupling track “空白のおまえを飲み込んでしまうまで” (which translates to Megapixel Portrait of a planet 500 million) is dedicated once again to the camera and features dreamy vocals by DEDE MOUSE. In some ways, the synth arrangement and drumbeats are rather whimsical and you also get a sense of retro J-Pop as well.
CD insert features artwork and an insert with the lyrics on both sides.
Overall, a pretty cool CD single from UKAWANIMATION!, very creative and experimental. Although, just a first single, I definitely want to see how his music evolves in his near future work and I look forward to hearing more from UKAWANIMATION! (Naohiro Ukawa ).
