  2. Making of FUTURE FOLDER

It’s been a little over a decade when I first heard of TRICERATOPS with their first CD single release of “Raspberry” back in 1997.

Always thought that they had a catchy group name and a name that gave the band that extra visibilty in conjunction with their melodic rock n’ roll/blues style of music

The band consists of Wada Sho on vocals and guitar, Hayashi Koji on bass and Yoshifumi Yoshida on drums and the trio got their name because of the three horns of a triceratops.

But the group has had several video releases and a best album release but for a CD single, the group hasn’t released a CD single since “Bokura no Ippo” back in Sept. 2006.

With their latest CD single “FUTURE FOLDER” (their 25th), TRICERATOPS makes their return and moves to Avex’s tearbridge records to continue their style of rock n’ roll.

Their latest song “FUTURE FOLDER” features a tinge of sharp melodic hooks, their latest CD single is homogenized modern rock. Not too hard, melodic and enjoyable.

The surprising track was the coupling song “THE SECOND STAR TO THE RIGHT / YOU CAN FLY! YOU CAN FLY! YOU CAN FLY!”.

The song written by Sammy Cahn and music by Sammy Fain was a song created back in 1951 for the Walt Disney animation “Peter Pan” and TRICERATOPS version has a Beatle meets Cheap Trick vibe style with the group harmonizing and singing the songs in English.

For “THE SECOND STAR TO THE RIGHT”, the group sings together, harmonizing with a guitar playing in the background. But after 90 seconds into the song, a transition is made to “YOU CAN FLY! YOU CAN FLY! YOU CAN FLY!” which then becomes more upbeat, rock n’ roll in a Weezer-style of way.

A very cool cover of the two classic Disney tracks.

As for the DVD, the DVD features the music video of “FUTURE FOLDER” featuring the guys performing with each other and some vector-style imagery/illustrations are featured.

But the best part of the DVD is the “Making of FUTURE FOLDER” which features the guys at the studio planning and experimenting with the actual track. Then focusing on the shooting of the music video and ending it with video live concert footage of the band and the crowd at various live performances.

The CD insert is a standard bi-fold with lyrics and production credits and a mini-flyer that includes a promotion for “TRICERATOPS SUMMER TOUR ’08 MADE IN LOVE”.

It’s great to see TRICERATOPS back again watching the clips from their live performances and their music video on the DVD, the trio still has the same energy that they had back in the late 90′s.

Their latest CD single “FUTURE FOLDER” is definitely a TRICERATOPS style of track and the Disney covers were a bit surprising to find on the CD single but overall, their 25th CD single is energetic and fun to listen to.

Another solid CD single from the band and I look forward to their next upcoming CD single.
