Hiroki Maekawa is a singer from Avex who grew up listening to CHAGE and ASKA and Fumiya Fujii. He is also the son of Kiyoshi Maekawa, lead vocalist of Hiroshi Uchiyamada and Cool Five and following his father’s footsteps in music and television.

Hiroki tried out for an a-motion 2005 audition and won. By 2006, he released his first single “Maple”. A musician that can play the guitar and piano, Hiroki Maekawa has released a total of four singles which include his latest single “8mm video”.

The single and first track is titled “8mm video” which is a ballad and features Hiroki Maekawa playing the piano and showcasing his vocals and slowly brings his band into the track. For the most part, the ballad is really well done and it’s a pretty cool mid-tempo rock ballad.

His coupling track “守るべき人” (which translates to “protecting people”) is another piano-driven mid-tempo track and is more centered on the acoustic guitar and piano. Another cool mid-tempo track which showcases Maekawa’s vocals.

The third track features an acoustic version of “8mm video” and features Maekawa playing the piano and the acoustic guitar. The final two tracks feature the instrumental versions of both vocal tracks.

The CD insert features lyrics for the two tracks and production credits.

Overall, Maekawa’s fourth single is quite mellow but it’s pretty good. Showcasing more of his vocals and piano and acoustic guitar playing but overall a solid single. If you are discovering Hiroki Maekawa’s music for the first time, “”8mm video” is worth a try!
