For Spanish rock artist/songwriter/musician Jairo Zavala (Vacazul, 3000 Hombres, Amparanoia and Los Coronas, Calexico), having been a songwriter and musician for so long, it was time for Zavala to take on his first solo project known as DePedro and a self-titled album.  Joined by members of the Arizona-based rock band Calexico, the album features a more personal style as we get a mixture of Latin, border fusion, folk, African music, reggae and blues and lyrics that are worldly in nature but also taking a look at our own self.

For the most part, the album evokes a feeling of celebration. Zavala is able to bring his awesome guitar playing and well-thought out lyrics to the album.  When you hear the acoustic guitar play and then hear the brass horns come in and play, it’s all about good times. You hear this liveliness through tracks such as the mariachi-like “Como el viento”, the very enjoyable “La memoria” and more prominent on a track like the upbeat Comanche. And you do get the cool and suave tracks with “¿Qué puedo hacer por ti?” and “Te sigo soñando”.

Not all the tracks on “Depedro” are sung in Spanish, tracks such as very cool rock track “Two parts in one” and “Tomorrow” are sung in English courtesy of Calexico’s Joey Burns are equally solid tracks.

As a listener to world music, I may not understand the lyrics for the majority of the songs on the album but for the most part, I feel the music on this album.  The vocals are equally well-done and features a unique balance with the music.

Overall, a solid solo album from Jairo Zavala!  Definitely worth checking out!
