With Janne Da Arc on hiatus, lead vocalist yasu has started up a band known as Acid Black Cherry and with the hard hitting CD single “SPELL MAGIC”.

The latest side project also brings considerable talent as Yasu teams up with SUGIZO (guitarist of LUNA SEA), SHUSE (bassist of La Chryma Christi), YUKI (Aucifer), Chisato (PENICILLIN) and oh, are the results truly freakin’ awesome!

Unlike Janne Da Arc’s music, “SPELL MAGIC” features blasts of heavy guitar with pretty awesome razor sharp melodic hooks. I was very impressed by the music as it was the type of visual kei that you can just imagine being one hell of an awesome performance if done live. It happens to be a very catchy song that I can’t stop listening to.

The c/w track “Shinin On Kimi ga Hoshii” is a ballad from back in 1985. A beautiful ballad that yasu has done for years with Janne Da Arc but this one has a very whimsical and beautiful feel to it. With a jazz club lounge feel with the musical focus being on the piano, bass, acoustic guitar and drums, yasu’s vocals compliments the music very well. It simply felt like a Go Hiromi song but done by yasu, which in itself very interesting and a total different vibe than the main track.

As far as the DVD is concerned, the music video for “SPELL MAGIC” is awesome. The video features auditions at AVEX and a nerdy band (yes, the band members dress like nerds) comes in to perform but shocking the people reviewing the band as Acid Black Cherry rocked the house.

The OFF SHOT features the making of the song and yasu in the studio and the making of the music video.

All in all, a worthwhile CD single to pick up and I’m really impressed if yasu continues in this direction for Acid Black Cherry because I’m hooked.
