CHATMONCHY is a three-member all female rock band which consists of lead vocalist/guitarist Eriko Hashimoto, Akiko Fukuoka (Bass and backup vocals) and Kumiko Takahashi (drums and backup vocals) who hail from Shikoku, Japan.
The group which started back as early as 2000, received their big break when Supercar producer Junji Ishiwatari produced their first album “chatmonchy has come”. But it wasn’t until 2007, when the bad had their first anime-related tie-in with the anime series “BLEACH” and their song “Daidai” was used for the ending theme. Although previous singles have charted on the Oricon charts, the band would receive worldwide recognition for that single and not long after, their third major label album “seimeiryoku” debuted at #2 on the Oricon Album Charts.
Their ninth CD single “Somaruyo” was released in November 2008 and features a slow jam, emotional rock ballad. Overall, a pretty solid mellow track featuring strong bass from Akiko Fukuoka which gives the song a retro type of feel. A pretty cool track!
For those who are hoping there is a rockin’ track on the single need not worry as the second track “Aiseteta” and the third track “RPG” are pretty cool. A mellow rock song that picks up during it’s chorus with the two members harmonizing and pretty cool guitar playing by Eriko Hashimoto.
The final track “RPG” features a bass and drum-driven track and squeaky guitar playing. I dig the chorus when the ladies start singing “RPG” and also the musical transitions throughout the song. Overall, a fun track on the single.
As for the CD insert, the insert is a tri-fold with lyrics and production credits.
Overall, CHATMONCHY fans will find “Somaruyo” to be a fun single. Although not so hardcore in execution and actually a kind of mellow feel compared to their past songs, the single does feature three solid tracks. If you’re a CHATMONCHY fan, you can’t go wrong with this single. I definitely enjoyed it!
