Terraformars (a J!-ENT Anime on Blu-ray Disc Review)

February 11, 2018 by · Leave a Comment

“Terraformars” is an anime series that will no doubt entertaining anime fans who are looking for a lot of action (but also a lot of violence).  This is a series that spares no expense of offing key characters and a series that showcases the survival of the Annex 1 team on Mars as they take on thousands of evolved cockroaches intent on killing them.  While it does not incorporate everything that the manga series featured, it’s still a solid, action anime series worth watching!

In the deep silence of space, the planet Mars hisses with death. On Earth, a mysterious virus is devastating the human race. To find a cure and give humanity a fighting chance of survival, a multinational team of genetically modified citizens must race to the Red Planet and uncover its secrets. What awaits is the bloody aftermath of a colonization attempt gone horribly wrong–hordes of hyper-evolved cockroaches known as “Terraformars” roam keen to kill. Earth’s chosen stand ready for combat and ready to change the course of human history. The question is which species can unite for victory.

In 2011, writer Yu Sasuga and artist Kenichi Tachibana would create “Terra Formars”, a manga series that would become a major hit in Japan.

First serialized in Shueisha’s “Weekly Young Jump”, “Terra Formars” was ranked #1 in the 2013 “Kono Manga ga Sugoi!” top 20 Manga for Male Readers survey and an anime series produced by LIDEN FILMS would be air on Japanese TV in 2015.

And now the series will be released on Blu-ray/DVD courtesy of Viz Media.

With Earth looking to colonize Mars which is undergoing its final stages of Terraforming and now becoming a green planet, a group of 15 men and women have been sent to Mars to check on the Terraformation of the planet.

Meanwhile, on Earth, the planet is falling into ruin due to environmental destruction and energy shortages, so Mars has been the focus by scientists.

Scientists have used moss and a black organism to darken the surface of the planet and causing it to absorb more sunlight, increase temperatures and melting the carbon dioxide.

The black organism used by scientists were cockroaches.

As the 15 men and women of BUGS 2 arrive on the planet on their mission to evaluate the planet but also to find out what happened to the first crew (BUGS 1) that landed on the planet.

The team discover that the Terraforming has succeeded but to their shock, the cockroaches have mutated with human bodies.

And now the humans have become the hunted.

Because the cockroaches exhibit all abilities of a cockroach, it was learned that scientists embedded human DNA in them and their mutation has made them beings that would not just survive in Mars but also exhibiting human characteristics and a hatred towards humanity (as humanity has had a hatred towards cockroaches).

But humanity also has found a way for humans to counteract the cockroaches by using injections of insects on humans that will briefly give them insect powers. But is it enough for the humans to survive in Mars as they are now considered the pests for the planet in which the humanoid cockroaches are the primary species?

The anime series is set 20-years later and Shokichi Komachi is now the new head of U-NASA. As one of the few survivors to escape from Mars and survive the cockroach onslaught, the Earth he has returned to is not just facing an overpopulation problem but also a widespread virus that came from Mars.

The bad news that the only way to stop it is to confirm the existence of the virus and determine its type and bring it back to Earth in hopes to create a vaccine.

But will Shokichi find a new group of people willing to sacrifice their lives for humanity by going to Mars and prepare for the onslaught of cockroach/humans that have infested the planet and want nothing more than to kill the humans?

As the Terraformars have invaded the spacecraft of Annex 1, it becomes a battle of survival as the recruits must prepare for a crash landing on Mars, but to find out that not only have Earth’s recruits have evolved, so have the Terraformars!

On Mars, the officers come across different types of Terraformars that somehow have other insect abilities. Did they evolve that way or is someone responsible for the insects becoming bipedal humanoid.

VIDEO:

“Terraformars” is presented in 1080p High Definition (16×9). Featuring character designs that respect Tachibana’s original manga artwork, overall picture quality is well-done and colors are vibrant.  I didn’t notice any artifacts or banding issues with this series on Blu-ray.

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

“Terraformars” is presented in Japanese and English Dolby TrueHD 2.0. Crystal clear dialogue and music through the front channels.  Both soundtracks are well-acted.

Subtitles are in English.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“Terraformars” comes with interviews with the English dub talent (Erica Lindbeck, Chris Niosi, Patrick Seitz and Viz Media’s Terraformars Team), clean opening and ending and an art gallery.

EXTRAS:

“Terraformars” comes with both the Blu-ray and DVD of the series.

In America, there have been a number of sci-fi films that have featured humanity taking on various alien species on Mars.

But what makes Yu Sasuga and Ken-Ichi Tachibana’s “Terraformars” so fascinating and also exciting is the science of Terra Formation and how scientists were able to create something that may lead to their own demise.

It’s interesting because of all species to bring on Mars, any human would know that cockroaches are the most resilient insect. Not only are they quick but they are very hard to kill.

Stepping on them doesn’t always fully kill them, throwing them away in a toilet in water also doesn’t kill them as they try to escape. So, for anyone familiar with the resilient cockroach can possibly think if a cockroach evolved to something much larger than a human being, not only would it be powerful but also hard to kill.

And despite humans ability to strategize, without having the same power to fight back, humans on Mars are literally defenseless. And to fight back, the use of insect injections from powerful insects in the planet may be what is needed to fight against these human cockroaches.

This first half features Shokichi recruit a ragtag bunch of people willing to sacrifice themselves in hopes for a payday but also in hopes for a vaccine to help eliminate the virus from Mars that have been killing people all over the globe.  But will these new recruits encounter the same tragic experience that Shokichi had once endured?

And once the humans return to Mars, unfortunately things don’t happen all that well as it all seems doom and gloom from the start as the Terraformars have invaded the spacecraft of Annex 1 and when the crew does reach Mars, they realize that the enemies they have fought, also have gain intelligence and a new brand of fighting back. Which does not sound good for humanity, at all!

It’s a very exciting and action-packed anime series for sure.  But having read Yu Sasuga and Kenichi Tachibana’s manga series prior to watching the anime, there are differences.

For one, the manga began with the first 15 men and women of BUGS 2 to arrive on the planet on their mission to evaluate the planet but also to find out what happened to the first crew (BUGS 1) that landed on the planet.  The team discover that the Terraforming has succeeded but to their shock, the cockroaches have mutated with human bodies.

In the anime series, it immediately begins with the introduction to Akari Hizamaru trying to save his childhood friend Yuriko and then by episode 2, featuring the Annex 1 heading to Mars.

The manga series put a lot of thought into its introduction, a glimmer of what will transpire on Earth and then the introduction to the characters and Annex 1 heading to Mars.  The manga also went into a lot of details trying to describe the insect or mammal/animal they were tested with.

The anime series focuses on Akari and Michelle K. Davis, with other episodes giving certain characters their own introduction.  While still action-packed and exciting, the anime series does miss out on a lot of the character building storylines and that’s unfortunate.

The animation is respectful to the manga series and one thing I like about the anime series is seeing the color differentiation with the characters.  The manga series could get a bit confusing as certain characters look the same (and it doesn’t help that so many characters are introduced), so the animation does have that as an advantage.  Picture quality is good with slight softness but LIDEN FILMS did a good job.   The lossless soundtrack in Japanese and English stereo and the voice acting for both soundtracks are well-acted.

As for special features, the Blu-ray comes with interviews, clean opening and ending and an art gallery.

Overall, “Terraformars” is an anime series that will no doubt entertaining anime fans who are looking for a lot of action (but also a lot of violence).  This is a series that spares no expense of offing key characters and a series that showcases the survival of the Annex 1 team on Mars as they take on thousands of evolved cockroaches intent on killing them.  While it does not incorporate everything that the manga series featured, it’s still a solid, action anime series worth watching!

Terra Formars Vol. 20 (Story by Yu Sasuga, Art by Ken-Ichi Tachibana) (a J!-ENT Manga Review)

I enjoyed this latest volume, I’m hoping Sasuga can maintain consistency, as inconsistency has hurt the manga series.  But as vol. 20 brings upon the war between humanity and the Terra Formars, I can’t wait to read vol. 21!

The members of Ichi Security and the SPACIALS continue their deadly fight on the artificial island in an attempt to rescue the human hostages of the Terraformars. But the human traitors’ incredible technology closes in on Akari and Michelle as they make their escape. In the confusion, Hongo launches a suicidal attack that brings him face-to-face with a mysterious warrior who knows a terrible secret about the coming apocalyptic battle for Earth!

The Terra Formars have been waiting for the moment to invade Earth and now the invasion has begun and their target is Japan.

The beginning of the human vs. Terra Formars war begins in vol. 20!

And the mission is to take down the Invoker.

What is “Terra Formars”?

In 2011, writer Yu Sasuga and artist Kenichi Tachibana would create “Terra Formars”, a manga series that would become a major hit in Japan.

First serialized in Shueisha’s “Weekly Young Jump” and an OVA and anime series slated later this year, “Terra Formars” was ranked #1 in the 2013 “Kono Manga ga Sugoi!” top 20 Manga for Male Readers survey.

With nine tankobon volumes published in Japan, “Terra Formars” vol. 1 will be released in the United States in July 2014 courtesy of Viz Media (on the Viz Signature imprint).

The team discover that the Terraforming has succeeded but to their shock, the cockroaches have mutated with human bodies.

As the Japanese members, Shokichi Komachi and his childhood friend Nanao Akita try to make contact with one of the beings, the humanoid cockroach snaps Nanao’s neck.

In volume 20, as America steps into aid Japan to rescue humans in the China Sea, America entering China Sea is seen as an act of war.  But when China is to give a press conference to the world, instead of human, it’s a Terra Formar.  And with the press conference being shown all over the world, the Terra Formas decide to invade Earth.

Which leads to a battle on Earth between the humans and the Terra Formars.

Just when you think the story has strayed off course, fortunately Yu Sasuga was able to bring “Terra Formars” back to what made the manga awesome in the beginning.

The manga series has always been a story about human survival against the Terra Formars.  And because of what humans have done in trying to create a weapon, suffice to say, experimentation and corruption has led to an invasive species now on Earth and are threatening invasion.

And what Sasuga was able to create is a really smart story of how the invasion takes place and delving into Japanese politics about what happens if a Prime Minister goes down and how it eventually leads to the temporary downfall of the entire cabinet.

And in this case, the perfect opportunity for the Terra Formars to strike when Japan is unable to respond.

Also, the way the story is written about the threat between a pending war between America and China (as China were the antagonists) and using the threat of invasion to show unity between all countries to fight a common threat.

And now it leads to this all-out, action-packed war that is featured throughout the pages of vol. 20.  The artwork by Ken-Ichi Tachibana is fabulous but if anything, Yu Sasuga manages to bring things back to its roots, building upon it and making it a more interesting story.

So, as I enjoyed this latest volume, I’m hoping Sasuga can maintain consistency, as inconsistency has hurt the manga series.  But as vol. 20 brings upon the war between humanity and the Terra Formars, I can’t wait to read vol. 21!

The Terra Formars are on Earth and they are experimenting on humans and now the humans are going to fight back by infiltrating their facility somewhere in the East China Sea.

Recruited by the government is Joichi Hongo, Akari Hazamaru, Kyo Hyuga and Kanako Sanjo, their goal, to find, seize and capture the long time Terra Formar who has been on Earth for at least 20 years, known as the Invoker but to also free the missing Japanese who have been taken.

All this and more in vol. 19 of “Terra Formars”!

But is it enough for the humans to survive in Mars as they are now considered the pests for the planet in which the humanoid cockroaches are the primary species?

In volume 18, Akari Hizamaru and others are working for Ichi Security Co., Ltd. Their primary duty, to eradicate the Terraformars on Earth. The technology is able to read bit frames from the brains of the Terraformars who were killed but it is grave importance to find their hideout.

When Akari visits a sewer area in Sumida Ward, what will he discover?

As the story now focuses on familiar faces, a group consisting of Joichi Hongo, Akari Hazamaru, Kyo Hyuga and Kanako Sanjo formed by the Japanese government to free the Japanese being held against their will and are being experimented by a Terra Formar known as the Invoker.

And just when things are looking bad for the Japanese team, out of nowhere comes some extra help from the Americans, featuring Michelle K. Davis, the commander of Team 4 of the American Space Force called the Spacials.

And after feeling a bit down on the last few volumes as it really deviated from the story that we have been enjoying all this time, seeing the teams fighting against all odds on Mars, with issue #19, Japan and USA, specifically Akari and Michelle are back together again and what an exciting volume this turned out to be!

Not only do we get to see familiar faces from the Japan side but also the US side and to see once again, China and another group/individuals as the primary antagonists.

It does get a bit chaotic with this final issue and with so many people back together, some may get confused with all these characters showing up.  But hopefully we see how these character dynamics play out for issue 20.

The artwork by Ken-Ichi Tachibana is magnificent. Characters are well-detailed, artwork is just pleasing and the action is well-featured. And of course, the writing and research done by Yu Sasuga has really made “Terraformars” an exciting series.  Granted, when the series abruptly changed from Mars to Earth, that was probably the series major downpoint as getting readers to go fastforward was not an easy task and rightfully upset many fans of the series.  But with this issue, you see a glimpse of promise now that characters from that second Mars mission who survived from both Japan and USA are together again!

What are the true plans of the Terraformars on Earth? And how will the Invoker and China respond to Team Japan and USA’s infiltration of the facility?  Find out in an action-packed Vol. 19 of “Terra Formars”!

Terra Formars Vol. 18 (Story by Yu Sasuga, Art by Ken-Ichi Tachibana) (a J!-ENT Manga Review)

July 22, 2017 by · Leave a Comment

“Terraformars” is an exciting, violent but addictive series that I am always looking forward to! But I admit that I was a little disappointed about this new direction that writer Yu Sasuga has taken the series  and characters for vol. 18 and not giving a storyline to wrap up the Mars expedition. The abrupt change was not what I was expecting, so for the most part, we have a new storyline and for anyone wanting to jump in, can do so with this volume.

The struggle continues in secret, deep beneath the streets of Tokyo. Akari, now working for a private security firm, looks for dangerous new ways to seek out and destroy the Terraformars before the world is overwhelmed by the alien cockroaches from Mars!

The story has immediately shift later in the future as the crew of the Annex Mission have returned to Earth and many have gone on with their lives but to find out that Terraformars are now on the planet, killing humans but secretly living in spaces…multiplying at a rapid rate and now have an army.

But while there have been many deaths, the question is what are these Terraformars up to and will their army strike?

All this and more in vol. 18 of “Terra Formars”!

When Akari visits a sewer area in Sumida Ward, what will he discover?

I have to admit that I was shocked and surprised by the fastforwarding of the storyline to Earth.  Having followed the series and seeing everyone trying to survive the onslaught on Mars, immediately the story is fastforwarded to the Annex crew having already escaped from Mars and successfully making it to back to Earth.

It does leave me feeling a bit disappointed because Yu Sasuga did not choose to finish the Mars storyline and decides to immediately skip the storyline during a time which many readers have invested money and time reading to crew having reached Earth.

There are short tidbits of what happened to a few of the crew who have made it back but I felt this took the continuity out of whack and in essence, you get a new storyline, a few returning characters, some new characters and a setting on Earth and with the same enemy.

The storyline focuses on Akari Shimizu who is now working for Ichi Security Co., Ltd. and his job along with his partners are to eradicate the Terraformars on Earth.

The company pinpoints an image taken from a brain scan of one of the diseased Terraformars leading to the sewers in Sumida and thinking that homeless humans are being killed and slaughtered by the Terraformars, he is shocked to discover that it’s the other way around.

Akari sees an old acquaintance named Saito who has been killing Terraformars (which he calls Subterraneans) and they are selling parts of these Terraformars for a price.  But as Akari offers his old friend money because the government would need these bodies, Saito is not so welcoming and a fight ensues between the two.

Meanwhile, we start to learn more about the plans of the Terraformars and what their goal of the army is.  How high their intelligence is and their abilities to graft parts to wild animals such as bears.

And we are introduced to new characters who will be the primary focus of this new arc as humans vs. Terraformars continue but this time…on Earth.

The artwork by Ken-Ichi Tachibana is magnificent. Characters are well-detailed, artwork is just pleasing and the action is well-featured. And of course, the writing and research done by Yu Sasuga has really made “Terraformars” a fascinating and captivating series.

But humanity also has found a way for humans to counteract the cockroaches by using injections of insects on humans that will briefly give them insect powers. But is it enough for the humans to survive in Mars as they are now considered the pests for the planet in which the humanoid cockroaches are the primary species?

In volume 17, we start to learn more about the countries that conspired to sabotage the mission.  But there a few theories that the Earthlings in Mars are wondering about.  Who created the pyramids and why is the A.E. virus inside of it?

Meanwhile, two humans with special abilities have shown up and are now wanting the body of Joseph G. Newton?  Why do they want his body?  Meanwhile, we find out what happened to the crew that came with Joseph G. Newton on Mars.

Just when you thought that there were enough complicated factors in “Terra Formars”, volume 17 gives us more answers, but poses more questions in regards to the countries or country that may be involved in the true sabotage of the Annex before it approached Mars.

The volume also showcases the past of Liu Yiwu and a storyline of two mysterious humans that have appeared on Mars, demanding the body of Joseph G. Newton or else they will kill everyone.

The artwork by Ken-Ichi Tachibana is magnificent. Characters are well-detailed, artwork is just pleasing and the action is well-featured. And of course, the writing and research done by Yu Sasuga has really made “Terraformars” a fascinating and captivating series.

Overall, “Terraformars” is an exciting, violent but addictive series that I am always looking forward to! As humanity depends on the survivors on Mars, how will Earth’s only survivors of the mission survive another day on Mars without medicine and advanced weaponry? But with the advancement of the Terraformars, who have now unleashed a terrifying onslaught on the humans.  Who was responsible for letting the Terraformars sabotage the annex?  Who are the two mysterious beings that appeared on Mars?  Find out what happens in Vol. 17 of “Terra Formars”!

Mankind’s final nightmare has become reality—the Terraformars have reached Earth! While the world’s governments scramble to deal with the situation, humanity’s best hope, the members of the Annex 1 expedition, are still trapped on Mars. Getting back to Earth is now not just humanity’s only hope for survival, it’s a race against time!

Back in “Terra Formars” vol. 1, we got a glimpse of the Terra Formars having reached Planet Earth, but since then, we have not seen any mention of how this came to be?  That is until this latest volume 14 of “Terra Formars” as a war on Earth between humankind and the Terra Formars has become a reality.

Meanwhile, back on Mars, the crew under Kuzuryu have captured Akari and Michelle and their plan now is to destroy everyone surviving member of UNASA on Mars.

Why does Kuzuryu want Akari and Michelle so badly?

As the Japanese members, Shokichi Komachi and his childhood friend Nanao Akita try to make contact with one of the beings, the humanoid cockroach snaps Nanao’s neck.

In volume 2 of “Terra Formars”, the manga is set 20-years later and Shokichi Komachi is now the new head of U-NASA.

In volume 4, the officers come across different types of Terraformars that somehow have other insect abilities. Did they evolve that way or is someone responsible for the insects becoming bipedal humanoid.

And in volume 5, learning that these Terraformars have managed to evolve possible with other insects that were kept behind on Bugs 2. And now, Adolf Reinhad of Germany and his crew must survive in their fight against them.

In volume 6, the onslaught by the Terraformars continues and as the Division 1 has no extra serum to continue fighting or heal themselves, can the team of Lt. Davis and Alex save Division 1 in time?

Meanwhile, it appears there is a traitor amongst U-NASA and that the Terraformars are much more developed than expected.

In volume 7, it is revealed who the traitors who sabotaged the U-NASA mission and why they did it. As Divisions 1 and 2 finally regroup and plan their next strategy, back on Earth, we see how nations are politically corrupt and are working in their own personal best interests and their thoughts of even rescuing the divisions on Mars.

Low on medicine, low on weaponry, will the surviving divisions have any chance of survival on Mars?

In volume 8, the Chinese have revealed that they were never on anyone’s side and are in control of the lab and annex. And with the Chinese feeling they can eliminate all other teams sent by various countries, the Russians are the first to arrive and take them on.

Who will win in this fierce battle? And what about the Terra Formars?

In volume 9, the Chinese are in pursuit of the USA and Japan teams, while Russia who are incapacitated are behind. Meanwhile, the Rome team are also being ambushed.

In order to create a diversion, both Michelle K. Davis and Akari Hizamaru must fight with all their might to take on two powerful Terra Formars they have faced yet…a ground beetle and a bullet ant in humanoid version.

In volume 10, members of the USA and Japan team have been captured and Bao of the Chinese group plans to bring them back to their HQ. As the group is good as dead, may it be due to the swarming Terraformars that await them or being experimented on, the top ranked crew member, Joseph G. Newton manages to arrive in time. But can one man save the captured?

In volume 11 as Keiji and Division 1 try to infiltrate the HQ occupied by the Chinese delegation. But the Chinese are waiting for them and preparing to kill them off. As Division 1 makes their goal to send a signal back home, Keiji must become the diversion to fight the Chinese delegation.

Meanwhile, Terra Formars are also planning to do their own sneak attack upon the station.

In volume 12, all hell has broken loose as the USA/Japan team were confronted not only my the Chinese delegation but unbeknownst to all of them is that a huge swarm of Terra Formars have been unleashed on the station.

Meanwhile, major sacrifices have taken place and a few main characters do not make it alive.

In volume 13, the USA and Japan team not only have to fend off the huge swarm of Terra Formars but also a Chinese delegation send to kill all teams and have the Chinese team escape the planet.

But what the Chinese team were not expecting is the reawakening of Akari Hizamaru’s ability, but even more surprising is the return of Germany’s Adolf Reinhard and Eva Frost, who were long thought were dead. How is this possible?

In volume 14, Earth is now under the attack of powerful Terra Formars and Kuzuryu has captured Akari and Michelle.  But what does Kuzuryu want with these two?

Just when you thought that there were enough complicated factors in “Terra Formars”, volume 14 has now shown us that Earth is now in war with the Terra Formars!

You would think that a mass population of humans, the aliens don’t have much of a chance, but somehow these aliens are much too powerful than humankind had ever thought.

Meanwhile, the storyline of Kuzuryu capturing Akari and Michelle continues.  But unbeknown to both, someone will come to their aid.

Not just on Mars but now on Earth.

It’s a chaotic battle of survival on Planet Earth and on Planet Mars.  Find out what happens in Vol. 14 of “Terra Formars”. Recommended!

Shocking!  It’s definitely one word to describe the absolute pandomonium that takes place in this latest volume of “Terraformars”.

As the US/Japan team sent out a major distress signal back to Earth, a Chinese delegation was sent to Mars to assist the traitorous Chinese crew and to eliminate all the other divisions.

But the Terra Formars reveal how advanced they have become and now everyone must try to survive the onslaught.

Unfortunately, not everyone will survive, including key characters.

With this action-packed volume, Yu Sasuga no doubt put a lot of surprising twists as the unexpected eventually takes place as the humans must try to survive the advanced Terra Formars who have shown that they have learned advanced technology.

But with the onslaught, a few ended up losing their lives in battle.   And I’ll leave it at that as mentioning anymore can spoil the storyline.

With key characters being killed in this volume, needless to say, this volume of “Terraformars” is shocking and all-out awesome!  A good balance of an exciting plot and action, those who have followed the series since vol. 1, should be quite content with this latest graphic novel release.

The artwork by Ken-Ichi Tachibana is magnificent. Characters are well-detailed, artwork is just pleasing and the action is well-featured. And of course, the writing and research done by Yu Sasuga has really made “Terraformars” a fascinating and captivating series.

Overall, “Terraformars” is an exciting, violent but addictive series that I am looking forward to!
