Susan Boyle – I Dreamed a Dream (a J!-ENT World Groove Album Review)

December 9, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

A solid album showcasing Susan Boyle’s vocals.  An album consisting primarily of cover songs but an arrangement that compliments Boyle’s vocals.  Overall, a safe but yet fantastic debut!

ARTIST: Susan Boyle

ALBUM: I Dreamed a Dream (Digital Version)

LABEL: Syco Music/Columbia Records

DURATION: 43:00

RELEASE DATE: November 23, 2009

  1. Wild Horses
  2. I Dreamed a Dream
  3. Cry Me a River
  4. How Great Thou Art
  5. You’ll See
  6. Daytime Believer
  7. Up to the Mountain
  8. Amazing Grace
  9. Who I was Born to Be
  10. Proud
  11. The End of the World
  12. Silent Night

Susan Boyle, a singer who came from a village in the UK and came on the first episode of this year’s “Britain’s Got Talent” to a crowd of disbelievers.  Many saw this 47-year-old woman come on stage and tell Simon Cowell that she wants to become a professional singer and said that she has never been given a chance and would like be like Elaine Page.  Of course, the crowd looked at Boyle with their eyes rolling up thinking that she would go nowhere.  But once she started singing “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserables”, that is when the crowd, Simon Cowell and the judges were just amazed by her beautiful voice.

After the performance, the video of her performance went viral online and even featured on various news sites around the world attracting millions of people worldwide and introducing people to this talent and reminding people that you can’t judge a book by its cover and in this case, Susan Boyle proved the naysayers wrong.

And now here she is with her first album “I Dreamed a Dream” and again, she has proved the naysayer’s wrong as vocalist has debuted #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts beating out new album releases from Rihanna and Adam Lambert.  Boyle has since sold over a million records.

I’ve listed to Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream” several times already and I’m really impressed by her vocals.  The arrangements chosen for several of the tracks compliment her vocals which most of the tracks comprise of piano and strings.  With some songs such as her wonderful rendition of “Cry Me a River” featuring a great touch of jazz, her “Les Miserables” cover of “I Dreamed a Dream” is just as fantastic as her performance on television, to the organ version of “Amazing Grace”, the acoustic guitar driven cover of the Skeeter Davis song “The End of the World”, a piano driven version of the Monkee’s “Daydream Believer”,  to the choir-backed “Who I Was Born to Be” and ending with a Christmas song with “Silent Night”.

But this is literally a solid album with each track sung very well.   Most of the songs featured on the album are covers but there is one original track “Who I Was Born to Be” which is wonderfully sung.  Seriously, this whole album showcases Boyle’s vocals and I do believe that working with cover songs worked well for the release of this album.  Sure, it’s playing a bit safe but at the same time, it reminds us once again that Boyle has been blessed with a remarkable voice.

BUY THIS ALBUM:

Back in the 80′s, aside from the Jackson’s, I grew up listening to another R&B group known as DeBarge.  A big fan of the DeBarge family, I was buying albums from El, Bunny and Chico DeBarge and had hoped for a family reunion but unfortunately, many of the talents from the family got caught up into major trouble and thus negating a possible reunion for now.

But I have to admit that I had all smiles when I heard actually from a DJ in Tokyo plugging a track from Kristinia DeBarge for the song “Goodbye”.  Hearing the song, I immediately was hooked but with that famous last name, made me more excited to hear, a DeBarge family member is back in the music scene.

Kristinia is the daughter of James DeBarge (yes, the one that was married to pop diva Janet Jackson for a very short time) and made her debut to America at the age of 13 for “American Idol” spin-off “American Juniors” in 2003.  Not long after, she started working with popular producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and eventually joined his record label Soda Pop Records (a sub-label of Island Def Jam Records).

The artist has since released two singles (one which is a double A-sided single) with “Goodbye”, “Sabotage” and the Varsity Fanclub cover of “Future Love”.  And in August and September, the artist will be opening for Britney Spears on tour.

For the most part, I have listened to this album since it was first released.  It’s well-produced, well-sung, addictive and most of all, Kristinia has smooth and beautiful vocals in combination with cool beats and a upbeat pop groove.

The first track “Somebody” features a collaboration with Mel & Mus (who produced the track and does the music) and for the most part, a catchy dance track.  The second track “Future Love”, a cover of the boy band – Varsity Fanclub’s popular track features a more pop with a slight more upbeat tempo than the original.  This track is her second single (along with “Sabotage”, as a double-A sided single).

The third track features the ballad “Speak Up” feature a collaboration with producer Ryan Tedder (who also provides the music).  An awesome track showcasing Kristinia’s vocals.  Well done!

The fourth track “Goodbye” is a Babyface track.  Overall, an upbeat, addictive track utilizing the classic 1969 Steam track “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye”.  A wonderful debut single for Kristinia.

The fifth track “Sabotage” is Kristinia’s second double-A sided single (along with “Future Love”) and features a track produced by The Jam (Mike Mani and Jordan Omley).  An upbeat pop track.

One of my favorite tracks on the album is “Died In Your Eyes” (the sixth track) produced by the Jam.  The chorus instantly hooks you with Kristinia’s beautiful vocals.

The seventhtrack “Powerless” produced by RADIO and The JAM.  Featuring a Rihanna-ish style of track.  But overall, a well-produced, upbeat track.  The eighth track “Cried Me a River” features a Babyface & Preach produced upbeat ballad.  Another catchy track.  The ninth track “Doesn’t Everybody Want to Fall in Love” features a Babyface & Preach produced track.  Another irresistible pop track.

The tenth track “It’s Gotta Be Love” features a Babyface produced track.  A commercial, smooth R&B track.  In a way, a combination of modern R&B and almost 90′s old school style of music, but overall a solid track.

The final track on the album is “Disconnect” featuring a Babyface produced track.  A ballad featuring a mid-tempo track with a deep beat.

As for the CD insert, the insert features photos of Kristinia and production credits and thank you’s.  Unfortunately, no lyrics for the songs.

Kristinia DeBarge’s album debut with “Exposed” is exceptionally solid.  Having created that music relationship with a talented producer such as Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and also executive producers which include Edmonds, Jeff Burroughs and Antonio “L.A.” Reid was a good move for the young artist.

Having been developed as a music artist since 2003, her beautiful vocals combined with a solid production definitely led to an exciting, addictive and really enjoyable album.  I don’t think there was one track that I didn’t like.    So, overall, in one sense, I’m so happy to see a DeBarge back into music scene but also know that she has a good team behind her and solid production for her music.

“Exposed” is definitely recommended!

“The second CD single from moumoon features a theme for the Nintendo DS Bandai/Namco game ’99 no Namida’ and an English track.  Overall, an awesome and solid CD single by the rock duo!  This band has just become my 2008 Hot Band Pick of the Summer!”

  2. FULL MOON LIVE

In June 2008, moumoon (mou=Soft in French and Moon in English), which consists of lead vocalist YUKA and Masaki Kousuke (guitars, keyboards, piano, programming and chorus) released their second CD single “Tiny Star”.

The duo who has been capturing listeners with their music via the indie scene since 2004 and in 2006 released the lovely single “FLOWERS/pride” and their first mini album “Flowers” made the switch to avex trax in 2007 with their first major label release “Do you remember?” in December.

Their second CD single “Tiny Star” features a mid-tempo rock ballad that really reminded me of music by SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER.  YUKA has beautiful, sweet vocals and I was very impressed with her vocals.  I was immediately won over by the unique balance with her vocals and the acoustic guitar and as it transitions to a rock ballad.  Well done!

The song is also the CM song and used as a theme for the Nintendo DS Bandai/Namco game “99 no Namida” (99 tears).

The second track Kokoro no Shizuku” (Quiet Heart) is similar to “Tiny Star” which the song features sweet vocals and an acoustic guitar, rock ballad.  Again, I was drawn in to the dreamy vocals by YUKA for this second track and another well done song on this CD single.

The third track “Do you remember?” is an English version of their first CD single hit.  I have to admit that I was very pleased with the overall track because it had an Avril Lavigne style to it.  And I was very please by her vocals.  As the first two tracks had a sweet, dreamy style of vocals.  YUKA’s vocals sounds very Avril in the English version of the track and it’s done very well.  English was pronounced well and overall a solid track.

The fourth track “Sunrise” is a bonus track that is an upbeat rock track featuring a beautiful strings arrangement and again, another solid song on this CD single.  Very well done!

The fifth and sixth tracks are the instrumentals of the first two songs.

The DVD portion features the music video of “Tiny Star” which is tied into the commercial for the Nintendo DS tearjerker “99 no Namida” (not sure if you can call it a game or a tear-inducing simulator).

But the music video features the a woman who is moving out of her apartment (or dorm) and remembers the good times she shared with her friends and discovers a photo of her and her friends together and starts tearing.  The same woman and scenes are featured in the commercial, while the moumoon portions feature the two going through the room and performing.

The second track of the CD single features live performance clips of the duo and an interview portion.

The CD insert booklet features the lyrics and production credits.  Also, a flyer promoting the “99 no Namida” video game and the duo’s website.

I have to admit that I was very surprised by this CD single and to discover a group where I really loved the music and the vocals.

It almost struck me, in a positive way, of how I felt when I first discovered My Little Lover.

Moumoon’s music features dreamy vocals, cool music and well-written lyrics and overall “Tiny Star” is just a solid CD single featuring three awesome songs that I just fell in love with.

And what is more amazing with the DVD portion featuring the live performances, showcases vocalist YUKA performing live and pretty much what you hear on CD is what you hear during a live performance.  Her vocals are the real deal and I was very impressed by her English as well.

Masaki Kousuke also definitely gets credit for setting up the atmosphere of the music.  The overall ambience is lush and beautiful and that’s created by his imagination of the arrangement and great balance between the acoustic guitars, bass and drums.

After listening to their beautiful music, I’m now wanting more!

Overall this is a solid CD single that I highly recommend purchasing!

THEE OUT MODS “Rock-n-Roll Pirates” Review

ALBUM TRACK LISTING:

  1. Treasure Island
  2. Umaku Ikanaize

  4. Sakura
  5. Iikagenni Shiyagare!!
  6. GERO
  7. Fuck This Shit
  8. MY WAY
  9. GLORY
  10. Rokudenashi
  11. It’s your life

Get me up!!

One of the hottest new sounds, THEE OUT MODS are bringing a major ruckus on today’s punk music scene.  The new album “Rock-n-Roll Pirates” is 100% pure energy.  I started listening to the opening track “Treasure Island” on my iPod and could not help myself from wanting to stand up and dance.  The opening guitar riffs were playfully melodic with steadily beating foot on the bass pedal.  Suddenly I hear a powerful voice open forth, “Come on!” as it lead me into an exhilarating voyage.

THEE OUT MODS is composed of three hard-edged members.  Frontline vocal and guitarist SANA has a rough and powerful voice.  She can be strong yet add a flavorful twist by expressing dramatic changes in the vocals.  YOSHIKI on bass exhibits versatility and playfulness on the guitar riffs.  On drums, KENNY manifests an explosive range of ability as well as strong attitude in his playing.

“Rock-n-Roll Pirates” has many interesting titles.  “Umaku Ikanaize” is an awesome song as it exhibits THEE OUT MODS explosive attitude in its music as well as the lyrics.  SANA’s voice is deep, energetic as it gives this song a sexy vigor appeal to it.  “Iikagenni Shiyagare!!” is lightning fast with the bass line running through an awesome bliss.  “GERO”, one of my personal favorite songs is a fun song with very dynamic edges in the percussive end.  “Rokudenashi” is one of the more mellow songs, but through the versatility of the band, it still packs a punch.  The album closes with one of my favorite songs so far, the very creative and exciting “It’s you’re life”.

With so many fun songs, THEE OUT MODS puts together an awesome compilation that would be enjoyable by many audiences.  Judging by these wonderful songs, I am pretty sure they will definitely rock during their live performances.  They have an awesome style that is sexy and rough, which goes along with their music.  If you are into the rock or punk scene, definitely check out “Rock-n-Roll Pirates”!

Ishida Yuko – Changes (a J!-ENT World Groove CD Single Review)

August 29, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

“Gravure model turned music artist, Ishida Yuko (formerly known as Juan), returns with her second CD single ‘Changes’ and tries to prove that she’s not just your average model with a record contract and that she has what it takes to become an pop star.”

GROUP: Ishida Yuko

CD SINGLE: Changes

DVD:  Region 2, 4:3, Duration: 8 minutes

  1. Changes (Music Video)
  2. Changes (Making of Music Video)

It’s really interesting to see the business expansion of rhythm zone and with bringing jazz music to the once known as an urban R&B label.  But after promoting gravure model turned music artist Takasugi Satomi as one of their primary female solo artist (along with sexy diva, Koda Kumi and singer/songwriter Sakazume Misako) for the label, the label has brought in another gravure model, Ishida Yuko.

Personally, I’m used to seeing Ishida Yuko more as a lingerie model and even doing a google search on her name alone, you are greeted with a number of photos with her hardly with any clothes on.

So, after her first CD single “Missin’ U” in March, Ishida is back with her second CD single “Changes”.

The pop/rock song written, arranged and music by SUPALOVE duo Maeyamada Kenichi and Fujisawa Yoshiaki features a song about life changes after a breakup and self-reflection of making a change and getting out of a rut and being happy.

The song is catchy as it features an acoustic guitar intro with a strong beat and gradually features a pop/rock feel with it’s electric guitars clanging in the background with a bass drum beat.

The coupling song “darling” is a very cool R&B track produced by Yamaki Ryuichiro (known for his work with DOUBLE).  A smooth, freeflowin’ R&B track that actually goes well with her vocals.

The vocals of Ishida Yuko for both tracks is actually done quite well for the song but before I fully praise her, I would like to see more of her performance live.

As for the DVD, the DVD features Ishida Yuko sitting in a tiled room or laying in a black leather couch while singing the song.  The music video takes advantage of featuring her sexiness that she’s known for and putting her in outfits which showcases her in sexy poses and overall a sexy video.  The second track is a making of the music video and also footage from her photo shoot.

The CD insert booklet features lyrics for the two tracks, production credits and photos of Ishida in a black background.  Included is a flyer for Rhythm Zone artist releases for the month of July 2008.

I was very pleased with this CD single.  The music, her vocals and in balance with her sexiness worked very well.

Of course, Koda Kumi will be known as the frontrunner for her sexiness for the Rhythm Zone label, while Takasugi Satomi has taken a different approach by going with a pure, girl-next-door image and her music and music videos tend to showcase her as such, with Ishida Yuko, you expect sexy.

For a model that is seen in her bra and panties in many advertisements for various lingerie, you would expect nothing but sexy from this artist and on her music video, from the variety of poses and leg shots, sexy is what is being featured.  With more of a smooth R&B style than an in-your-face Koda Kumi style, she definitely fits into the Rhythm Zone musical and image style.

“Changes” is a solid CD single with two very well done songs.  Good producer collaborations with good music and Ishida does a good job vocally.

So, with two CD singles under her belt, my eyes are opened to her and her music but I still want to see more.  So, we’ll how the third CD single comes out, how well she performs live and continue to see if this model is indeed the real deal.

AAA – BEYOND~カラダノカナタ (A J!-ENT World Groove CD Single Review)

August 29, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

“AAA returns with their 18th CD single that features a departure from their upbeat pop/dance roots for ‘BEYOND~Karada no Kanata’ which I found enjoyable after repeated listening.”

GROUP: AAA

  1. BEYOND~カラダノカナタ – Music Video-

It’s been awhile since I reviewed an AAA CD single.  As an early listener of their music and reviewing their DVD’s, the group eventually grown on me and last year, proclaimed the group as my favorite pop group.

So, when their CD single “Mirage” (17th CD single, rel. Jan 2008) became their first #1 hit on the Oricon Charts, I couldn’t help but be happy.

In May 2008, AAA released their 18th CD single “BEYOND~カラダノカナタ” (BEYOND~Karada no Kanata), featuring a song that featured a different musical style from previous CD singles.

This time the vocals seem to feature more of the leader Urata Naoya which is an interesting decision since Nishijima Takahiro is typically used for the male lead for a lot of their main CD single releases.

But when this CD single started to grow on me is when I started listening to it during my summer commutes.  At first listen, I felt it was different but during repeated listening of the CD single, I think that the fact the music had that underlying deep groove, the percussion and electric guitars combined with the typical AAA fun, enjoyable track courtesy of Uno Misaki and group especially hearing the chorus of “Burn your blood, felsh and bon, turn your wheel of fortune now” and just finding that portion quite fun, especially to figure out if that was indeed what they were saying.

As for even though Urata for me is not a great vocalist but everyone has their part vocally in the song and  somehow I found myself listening to the CD single over and over and really enjoying it.

But it is a departure from their dance music that people enjoy and I can understand if listeners and fans may feel let down by “BEYOND ~Karada no Kanata” for being different but from Shimatani Hitomi to Suzuki Ami to LISA and other avex artists who have gone the experimental route of tackling on variety of musical genres, I’m a bit more open to change.

As for the coupling song, “One Night Animal”, we have a dance track arranged my Wall Five, Mase Masao and Watanabe Atsuhiro.  It’s actually a catchy pop track that you would expect from AAA.  Interesting arrangement as it has an 90′s J-Pop feel but at the same time employs vocalizer and a hint of digital sounds and electric guitar.  All in all, a fun track.

The remaining two tracks are the instrumental versions of the first two tracks.

As for the music video, I’m not sure if the song was used for any pre-Olympics programming but the music video features the group running in a track and jumping CG hurdles.  It’s a bit corny but somehow I enjoyed it since I’m used to their comraderie and if anything, I found myself focusing on the various clothing styles by each member.

The CD insert features a standard bi-fold with the lyrics and photo of the group on the other side.  Included is a promotional for the “Choice is Yours” mini-album released on June 18th ( featuring the male members of the group) and on the other side promoting the group’s AAA 3rd Anniversary Live 080922-080923.

Also, a note that there are three versions of this CD single.  This CD+DVD version, a CD extra version which features a video of “AAA Gokuhi Club 2″ and a CD version that has an extra track (Mirage 83key remix).

I actually enjoyed this CD single after repeated listening and during my long hours of traveling, found myself listening to the main track over and over again.

One thing I enjoy about AAA is the group’s camaraderie.  Their music, their DVD’s and overall, when you see them together, it’s just fun to watch and music that I find enjoyable overall.

The music of “BEYOND~Karada no Kanata” was an obvious departure from their pop/dance sound that I’m sure is not going to win fans who enjoy that but already, I’ve reviewed many CD singles and albums in this past year alone that features artists trying different genres and changing things up a bit.

Even the main cover of this CD+DVD single was interesting to see Ito Chiaki instead of Uno Misaki along with Nishizawa on the main cover.  Definitely the label changing things up a little for this CD single.

But overall, I did enjoy the CD single and although not as enjoyable as “MIRAGE”, I still enjoyed it nonetheless.

Acid Black Cherry – Aishite Nai (a J!-ENT World Groove CD Single Review)

August 18, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

“The third CD single from Acid Black Cherry (the solo project of Janne Da Arc lead vocalist Yasu), ‘Aishite Nai’ this time is a slower pace song compared to the last two CD singles. Plus another cover of a chart topping classic!”

BAND: Acid Black Cherry

CD SINGLE: Aishite Nai

LABEL: motorod

CATALOG #: AVCD-32091/B

DURATION: 9:14

RELEASE DATE: November 28, 2007

OFFICIAL WEBSITE

  1. 愛してない
  2. 異邦人

DVD: Region 2, 4:3, Duration: 14:54 minutes

  1. 愛してない – Music Clip
  2. OFF-SHOT

After reviewing Acid Black Cherry’s “Fuyu no Maboroshi” (the fourth CD single) and watching the music video, I realized their is somewhat of a storyline in the music videos featuring lead vocalist Yasu and his band members in otaku like outfits which culminated up to the dramatic ending of “Fuyu no Maboroshi”.

I noticed I missed reviewing “Aishite Nai”, so I listened to the third CD single which was more or less a ballad or un-ballad due to the title which translates to “not in love”.

But the CD single is more or less a slower-paced song compared to Acid Black Cherry’s previous releases which were very rock oriented with the thrashing guitars.

AKIHIDE (of BREAKERZ) is still heard prominently with his churning guitars in the background, as with SHUSE’s bass-playing. But nevertheless a song sung passionately by Yasu.

As for the coupling song “Ihoujin” (foreigner), following Yasu’s cover selections as in previous CD single, this time he goes to a no. 1 chart topping song from 1979 originally by Kume Sayuri and a song that has been covered a total of 13 times and in 2003 was most notable for the version by B’z guitarist Matsumoto Tak and ZARD.

The Acid Black Cherry version is pop oriented but a beautiful string arrangement in the background. All instruments were by Janne Da Arc keyboardist kiyo.

There are only these two tracks, no instrumentals included.

The DVD features the music video and off-shot.

The music video does not feature the otaku group as shown on the previous videos but features Yasu singing in the rain. You learn through the off-shot, which is literally the behind-the-scenes of the music video and recording of the song that cold water was pouring all over Yasu and after the shooting of the music video, Yasu screaming of how cold he was feeling.

But all in all, the off-shot was surprisingly lengthy at over 10-minutes. So, it was great to have that included.

As for the CD insert, standard tri-fold with lyrics and production credits on one side, pictures of Yasu on the other and a flyer promoting Acid Black Cherry’s fourth CD single and previous CD singles.

Overall, “Aishite Nai” is the slower-paced single of the first four CD singles but the music is very cool and as usual, Yasu’s vocals are well done.

Of course, I recommend the CD+DVD version pretty much for inclusion of the off-shot video which features a lot of footage if you are a big fan of Yasu or Acid Black Cherry in general.

But a solid CD single nevertheless! Check it out!
