LADY GAGA DOMINATES THE 2010 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS WITH EIGHT MOONMAN AWARDS INCLUDING COVETED “VIDEO OF THE YEAR”

September 13, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Kanye West and Taylor Swift Return to the VMA Stage

Lady Gaga, outdoing even herself with her adventurous couture, dominated the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, adding eight to her collection of Moonmen with awards including “Video Of The Year,” “Best Dance Video,” “Best Pop Video” and “Best Female Video.”  Eminem, who opened this year’s Awards with a triumphant performance, walked away with two statues for “Best Male Video” and “Best Hip Hop Video.”  VMA newcomers 30 Seconds To Mars and Florence + The Machine took home their first wins for “Best Rock Video” and “Best Art Direction,” respectively.  Justin Bieber was voted “Best New Artist.”

A year after Taylor Swift’s first VMA win was interrupted by Kanye West, the two returned to musically play out last year’s drama, once again on the VMA stage. For an exclusive live performance, Taylor sang “Innocence,” an emotional song she wrote about how she felt after last year’s incident.  Later in the evening and this year as an official performer, Kanye debuted “Runaway” (featuring Pusha T from Clipse), a personal statement on the turbulence of the last year.

MTV aired the 2010 Video Music Awards live on Sunday, September 12 from Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, having transformed the venue into a 1950’s sculptural nod to modernism.  The VMA’s kicked off with an epic performance by Eminem backed by an orchestra to present a medley of his comeback anthem “Not Afraid” into a fiery version of “Love The Way You Lie” with surprise guest Rihanna.  Host Chelsea Handler brought her edgy comedic flair to the Awards, making a dramatic entrance that riffed on Lady Gaga’s extravagant fashion sense, flying onto the stage wearing a suburban house on her head, complete with a single car garage, and ending her monologue by releasing a dove from her dress.  Backstage before taking the stage, Chelsea was shown receiving “encouragement” from well wishers Li’l John, Flo Rida and a score-settling Lindsay Lohan.

Kim Kardashian introduced Justin Bieber, who made his VMA debut performance with an outdoor set of “Baby” into “Somebody to Love” to throngs of adoring fans – including Kim herself who, waving a restraining order, professed she’d nonetheless wait for the young heartthrob in his dressing room.

In another show highlight, the one-and-only Cher presented Lady Gaga with her “Video of the Year” Award, donning the same outfit (yes, she still fit into it) that she barely wore more than 20 years ago in her own memorable video “If I Could Turn Back Time.”

With an intro by Ke$sha and Trey Songz, Usher’s electric entrance and pounding energy brought down the house with a medley of “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” into “OMG!,” showing off his dance moves against an other-worldly combination of visual effects.

The physicality of Usher’s set contrasted with VMA newcomer Florence + The Machine’s ethereal, breakout performance of “Dog Days Are Over,” featuring a large-scale dance number with scores of dancers and percussionists to create a flowing dream-like sequence.

Representing the rock side of the house, Linkin Park extended the VMA stage to include the first-ever performance at the landmark Griffith Observatory, where they performed their powerful single “The Catalyst” against the stunning backdrop of a spectacular Los Angeles sunset.

Hip-hop artist Drake was joined on onstage by Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beatz for a performance of his hit single “Fancy,” set against a supper club backdrop. Shortly following Drake’s performance, Chelsea stumbled upon the cast of “Jersey Shore” in, what else, a hot tub.  Teasing the cast about how dirty the water is, she finally agreed to jump in fully clothed, only to emerge wet and pregnant.

Additional performances included a medley by “dream team” Bruno Mars, B.o.B and Paramore, marking the first time ever that B.o.B. and Hayley Williams of Paramore sang their hit single “Airplanes” together.

Joining this year’s VMA house artist deadmau5 to perform their current hit singles was Travie McCoy, Jason Derulo and Robyn.  The night was filled with a long list of musical artists and stars including: Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Justin Timberlake, MTV Tr3s Artist of the Year Romeo from Aventura, Sofia Vergara, Jared Leto, Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, cast members from “Glee” and “True Blood,” Ne-Yo, Ellen DeGeneres, the cast of the upcoming film “Jackass 3-D,” Penn Badgley, Selena Gomez, Emma Stone and Ashley Greene.

Kanye West apologizes to Taylor Swift and writes song for her, writes heartfelt message

It must have been a deep morning for Kanye West. With the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards coming up, Kany West has once again apologized to Taylor Swift on her Twitter account and has also wrote a song for her.

West tweeted about Taylor:

I wrote a song for Taylor Swift that’s so beautiful and I want her to have it. If she won’t take it then I’ll perform it for her.

She had nothing to do with my issues with award shows. She had no idea what hit her. She’s justa lil girl with dreams like the rest of us.

She deserves the apology more than anyone. Thank you Biz Stone and Evan Williams for creating a platform where we can communicate directly

We’re both artist and the media and managers are trying to get between us. Everyone wants to capitalize off this is some way

West tweeted many messages in regards to his current mindset, about Swift, about his life, about the economy and having to let go employees and more. Here is an excerpt of what West tweeted on Saturday morning:

Man I love Twitter… I’ve always been at the mercy of the press but no more… The media tried to demonize me

They wanted yall to believe I was a monster in real life so you guys wouldn’t listen or buy my music anymore

I feel like they were waiting for the opportunity to go in all the way on me and when it came they beat me to a pulp

Even now a lot of articles start there first 2 paragraphs about how much of an asshole I am

How deep is the scar… I bled hard.. cancelled tour with the number one pop star in the world … closed the doors of my clothing office

Had to let employees go… for the first time I felt the impact of my brash actions … I felt the recession from an ownership side

People booed when I would go to concerts and the performer mentioned my name.

Remember in Anchor Man when Ron Burgandy cursed on air and the entire city turned on him? But this wasn’t a joke. This was & is my real life

There are people who don’t dislike me… they absolutely hate me!

I was chilling with this white girl having a conversation and she cut me off and said… Hold up… I thought you didn’t like us?!

That’s when you realize perception is reality. I’ve been straying from this subject on twitter but I have to give it to you guys raw now.

I have a mission in life to bring truth and beauty through my music and the visuals that anchor around it

The media has successfully diminished the “receptive” audience of (3rd person)… KANYE WEST

It is distasteful to cut people off as a general rule. What’s the point of dressing tastefully if I’m going to act the complete opposite?

Yes I was that guy. A 32 year old child.

When I woke up from the crazy nightmare I looked in the mirror and said GROW UP KANYE … I take the responsibility for my actions

I am not a bad person. Even in that moment I was only trying to do good but people don’t always need my help.

Beyonce didn’t need that. MTV didn’t need that and Taylor and her family friends and fans definitely didn’t want or need that.

These aren’t regular tweets… this is stream of consciousness … I want you guys to know and feel where my head is at…

Why was it made into such a race issue. Taylor loves rap music… I love country music.

I’ve hurt, I’ve bled, I’ve learned. I only want to do good. I am passionate I am human I am real. I wish I could meet every hater

I wish I could talk to every hater face to face and change there a opinion of me one conversation at a time.

I wish they all knew how much I really cared about music and pop culture and art and peoples feelings.

I wish they could accept that I’ve grown and only want to do good for the world. I want to help as many people as I can.

I want to help starting with the music and ending with the smile.

I want to win there hearts back so I can continue to bring my take on culture to the masses with a clean opinion.

It starts with this…

I’m sorry Taylor.

Taylor Swift, the young Country vocalist/songwriter who has been topping the charts and a performer recognized for her talents and her album “Fearless” was announced in July 2009 as the top selling album of the first half of the year with close to 4 million copies sold in the United States and internationally, over 10 million.  Needless to say, Taylor Swift has had such a fantastic year even despite the MTV VMA debacle via Kanye West.  If anything, I hoped the debacle introduced people to Taylor Swift’s magnificent music as she is able to capture genuine feelings and experiences through her songwriting and communicates the song through her beautiful vocals.

But these type of experiences of love and breakups have been an instrumental part of Swift’s life because she manages to take these good and bad experiences and like a painter who can grab the attention of the viewer through creativity, the same can be said about Taylor Swift’s music.

Needless to say, with the popularity of “Fearless”, a new Platinum Edition of the album was released featuring six new songs.  For those who purchase the physical CD, the album features 50 new photographs from her “Fearless Tour 2009″, a new collector’s cover, all of her music videos from her hit singles and new video footage of the starlet.

I’ve listened to this album a good number of times already and I have to admit that I’m quite impressed by her ability to craft these lyrics and literally grab the listener because each track is almost told in a storytelling fashion.

In fact, there is not one song I didn’t like. The theme of “Fearless” for the most part is about love and where Pink’s “Funhouse” is a good example of an album that features emotions after a bitter breakup and thus her album is quite dark, Swift’s “Fearless” is an album with tracks of those emotions that one would have when they are in love whether it’s a teenage crush, in a relationship or after a breakup.

Swift’s hit song “Love Story” is just an awesome track that showcases her songwriting skills but songs such as “Hey Stephen” is one of those songs that feature that storytelling style. In this song, Swift writes about a boy named Stephen that she has a crush on but other girls also like him. And it’s almost like reading a page from Swift’s diary about innocent feelings towards a person she likes.

Then there’s a track like “Fifteen” in which she writes about starting the first day as a freshman in high school and getting in a relationship with someone at the young age at 15.

Or a song like “The Way I Loved You” which is another well-written song (which she co-wrote with John Rich) about the pain of love and loving someone but a love that is over and looking back at the relationship.

Then you have her musical side in which she performs the acoustic guitar driven track “Breathe” with another popular and talented young artist Colbie Caillat.

And then there is the track “Forever & Always” which Swift wrote about her then boyfriend Joe Jonas (Jonas Brothers) and with their somewhat breakup that has been featured recently in the media, it will be interesting to see what kind of song Swift will pen for that.

As for the new songs on the Platinum Edition, we are treated to a positive acoustic-guitar driven track with “Jump Then Fall” and followed with another acoustic guitar track which is a slower-paced track but is quite beautiful love song.  Included is a piano version of “Forever & Always” and is followed up with three new upbeat tracks “Come In With the Rain”, “SuperStar” and “The Other Side of the Door”.

“Fearless” is just a fantastic album! Taylor Swift, she definitely stands out among the many young music artists out there and also, for the Country music genre, the ability to crossover and become a Country/Pop star in America.

Although we have seen someone like Carrie Underwood, Faith Evans and Shania Twain to do this, for someone as young as Taylor Swift to really come out so strong and able to attract listeners who typically may not have listened to Country music. Also, Swift is just not the average artist with good looks and a great voice, she’s also a talented songwriter and musician. Definitely a true talent and you can only wonder how this young woman will develop over the years.

The songwriting skills and the creativity behind the lyrics and her ability to take those lyrics and sing them sweetly and convincingly in a storytelling fashion is what I have enjoyed about “Fearless”. Beautifully written lyrics, songs that feature catchy melodies, elegant vocals and just overall, well-done!

For Taylor Swift fans who have been waiting for newer material, we may have not received a brand new album just yet but it’s great to know that her label cares about the fans to release a new version of “Fearless” via a Platinum Edition featured with six new songs, music videos, photos and definitely a great collector’s edition for Taylor Swift fans.  Otherwise, digital listeners get six new tracks in addition to the wonderful songs on the album.

Overall, “Fearless” was an awesome album released in 2008 and with this new 2009 release of “Fearless: Platinum Edition”, the album continues to be… fantastic!
