The devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan has affected millions of people. No one knows how much damage was caused, nor is Japan even close to tallying how many people are missing, injured or dead as rescue efforts are continuing.
When the earthquake hit, during the first few hours, J!-ENT was monitoring our J_ENTJAPAN Twitter site and reading posts from various followers and also following the posts of various music celebrity twitter accounts and noticing how stars such as Ayumi Hamasaki, TM Revolution, MICRO of Home Made Kazoku, Hikaru Utada, Issei Ishida, model Natsuki Katou, GACKT and MIYAVI were using their celebrity status on their Twitter accounts to direct people to emergency services and also some providing information in English for the international followers who may be living in Japan.
Here are the initial tweets that took place right after the earthquake occurred. Some tweets were done several hours later and while most were in Japanese, some stars addressed their international fans in English. Here are a few of those celebrity tweets:
- Ayumi Hamasaki - Among the most active tweets came from Ayumi Hamasaki who began trying to help people by posting emergency re-tweet information on her Twitter account. Hamasaki posted, “Before nature, we are powerless human beings. I hope and will retreat desperately spreading information. Do not despair, have to courage to stand up and have hope in our hearts. It depends on us!” For her English fans, Ayumi tweeted, “Thank you guys to keep praying for Japan!!!! We all gonna be strong. We can feel your heart. It will really be helpful to us. Thanks again for all prayers.”
- Takanori Nishikawa (TM Revolution) was also among the more active tweeters of the day as he did all he can to help people via Twitter, especially those who were non-Japanese fans living in Japan. TMR told his fans that he was OK but used a lot of his efforts to retweet information and important emergency information for those following him on Twitter.
- Home Made Kazoku’s MICRO also followed TMR’s lead by using his Twitter account to help those who are following him on Twitter.

Many people exposed at this point.”

For nearly 16 or 17 years, I have followed the Japanese female pop quartet SPEED. A group which consists of main vocalists Eriko Imai, Hiroko Shimabukuro and supporting vocalists/background dancers Takako Uehara and Hitoe Arakaki.
Purchasing singles, albums and videos when I was a college student and raiding Kinokuniya stores for any new release and then in Japan as I searched all over Tokyo and Yokohama for releases that I never owned and recording every performance from their earlier years on “The Yorumo Hit Parade” and seeing them grow up and mature before they called it quits in 2000 and to see them reunite once again in 2008.
Their latest, 18th single “Yubiwa” (指環, which translates to “Ring”) features two songs produced by nishi-ken and JIN. The first track “Yubiwa” is a beautiful pop ballad from the group. SPEED has had solid ballad singles in the past with “White Love” and “ALIVE” and for those who enjoyed those ballads will find “Yubiwa” to be another beautiful song.
Unlike the previous two tracks which they released back in the ’90s when they were teenagers, this time around, the ballad showcases the member’s maturity as women and you’re not going to hear Hiro’s high-pitched voice, instead you will get a more lower vocals which leads into the uplifting chorus.
And like previous SPEED singles, there has to be an upbeat track and in this case, the coupling song “Tracks” features a more synth-pop dance track arranged by nishi-ken. And it’s another coupling that probably could have functioned easily as a single release. It’s well-done and definitely like the musical arrangement with the beats and the overall energy of the track.
The remaining two tracks are the instrumental versions of “Yubiwa” and “Tracks”.
The CD insert comes with the lyrics and production credits to the two songs and comes with mini-inserts promoting SPEED’s upcoming live concert DVD to be released in November and a Vision Factory insert promoting the group’s website.
Also, released simultaneously with this single is a CD+DVD version which includes the music video for “Yubiwa” plus two other tracks.
Overall, another solid CD single from SPEED and showing us that they can continue to produce awesome music. Definitely worth checking out!

SPEED – SPEEDLAND The Premium Best Re Tracks (a J!-ENT World Groove Album Review)
August 13, 2009 by Dennis Amith · Leave a Comment

“Nearly 15 years later after I discovered SPEED, I’ve seen these young teenagers mature to women. ‘SPEEDLAND’ represents that maturity as the quartet revisits all their classic hits and re-record them. Although I prefer the original hit tracks to the re-recordings, as a fan of SPEED, it’s great to see the women reunite and hear their current reinterpretation of their hit songs.”

My first introduction to SPEED was back in 1995. The girls were brought onto a karaoke variety show titled “Yoru mo Hit Parade” and it was around the time that Okinawa talent Namie Amuro and MAX (formerly known as the Super Monkeys) were dominating the charts together during the mid-90′s. And SPEED was the latest unveiling of the group and eventually they scored a major hit with their first single “Body & Soul” in 1996. I can remember how amazed everyone was that this group of young teenagers, especially a 12-year-old named Hiroko would surprise Japan by their vocals and their choreography.
I can remember seeing the music video and immediately purchasing the CD single from Japan and from that point on, I was purchasing every CD single and VHS tape released of the group. Needless to say, I was a big fan.
Ten years ago, I can remember seeing on the big video screen in Shibuya, the music video of “ALL MY TRUE LOVE”, going through Yokohama to find their film “ANDROMEDIA” at a lock Blockbuster and then remembering near the time of my graduation in college, being amazed with their hit “Long Way Home” and playing it to my friends. This was in 1999 and a year later, the group would call it quits.
In 2008, the group reunited permanently after several “reunion” concerts and in 2009, the group has released “SPEEDLAND The Premium Best Re Tracks”.
It’s hard to believe that when we saw SPEED, they were in their young teens and now, here they are in their mid-to-late 20′s and they have matured as young women who have had solo music careers, acting careers, one became a mother, one become a painter and suffice to say, these women have matured as with their fans who grew up along with them.
“SPEEDLAND” for me, represents the group’s maturity.
Listening to “SPEEDLAND”, this is not a greatest hits album, this is a reinterpretation of their classic hits, resung and some with different musical arrangements. Needless to say, I am more biased towards the original versions of their hit songs.
There are quite a few key differences with the newer songs compared to their past, outside of musical arrangements. Back then, the recording of their past hits were when the girls were around 12-14 years old.
Hiroko was able to belt out very high vocals and even at times, some felt was a bit squeaky or high pitched for their taste, while others appreciated her vocal style. Eriko was always the singer with a mature vocals and this time around, things have changed. With age, Hiroko no longer has that high pitched vocals which she had when she was 12-years old, Eriko’s vocals sound much more mature and refined. In fact, for the most part, that is what people will notice is that their vocals are much more polished, refined and much better now than they were back then.
But the difference is that SPEED was a teen girl group that sound as they were supposed to be at that time, they were simply talented but teenagers that still had a lot of grow up to do and for an idol pop group, that was their shining point as a group.
But if people want the originals, it’s easy to go back and find their greatest hits albums and those interested in this album are interested in the reinterpretations and so, it all comes down to if the new musical arrangements agree with their more mature vocals.
The first track “Long Way Home” which started with this cool bass line and really jamming groove now features a new intro and pretty much a whole entire groove. It’s pretty much a completely different track and the chorus in the background just didn’t seem right.
The third and fourth tracks “Body & Soul” and “STEADY” retain the musical of the original. “Body & Soul” has a more well-defined studio sound and seems a bit slower than the original, while “STEADY” retains the original musical style.
The fifth track “Wake Me Up!” has a more vibrant, samba style of sound but I have to admit that the use of auto-tune was a bit surprising and seemed a bit out-of-place.
As for the ballads, “ALIVE” retains the original style of their classic movie hit song (used for their film “ANDROMEDIA”) but a track that evidently showcases a more mature vocals than the original. While “White Love” sports a more prominent drumtrack and more acoustic guitar, still as solid interpretation of the group’s most successful hit.
But a track that I was interested in hearing is the group’s most popular coupling track from their single “Wake Me Up!” and that’s “Nettaiya” and is a track that showcases Hiroko’s mature vocals, especially the second half of “ALL MY TRUE LOVE”. But on “my graduation”, the vocals was a bit flat for me compared to the original.
Not all songs are reinterpretations as “SPEEDLAND” also contains their 2008 single “Ashita no Sora”. The album also can be found with just the CD but for those who want the CD+DVD version, for a few dollars more they can purchase the album which comes with a DVD featuring the music video for “Ashita no Sora”.
As for the CD insert booklet, included is a booklet with the lyrics and production credits but also solo photos of each member and a mini flier “Welcome to SPEEDLAND” concert tour.

“SPEEDLAND” is an album that is a mix bag and I personally believe that it’s an album that will generate mixed opinions.
As a fan of SPEED, in one sense you feel excited that the group are together and have released an album featuring a reinterpretation of their classic hits. But I realized the classic hits I enjoyed back then were in part, the vocals were of young teenagers. They weren’t refined music artists and if anything, they were on TV nearly every night, on many magazines and commercials.
Needless to say, SPEED was the quintessential Japanese idol pop group of the mid-to-late 90′s but similar to their senpai Namie Amuro and the women of MAX, they built a unique aura with their Okinawa roots and easily distinguishing themselves from other female pop groups.
“SPEEDLAND” represents maturity. Gone are the high, squeaky vocals of Hiroko. Gone are those little vocal quirks that one can catch on each song of Eriko and Hiroko. And some songs that received a different arrangement entirely, some of those tracks are nowhere as good as the originals.
Where Avex has tested the reinterpretation of 90′s songs by the original group/vocalists this year alone (LINDBERG and KIYOHARU’s latest albums), for rock bands, it works…and also it helps that those albums, the vocalists were already adults. Definitely so much has happened since the mid-90′s and these are not young girls, SPEED are now women approaching their 30′s. And with their own solo careers, have managed to refine themselves as music artists through their experiences.
Some tracks work, some didn’t. That is the feeling I came away with by listening to their modern reinterpretations of their classic hits.
With the group reunited and about to go on their Fall 2009 SPEEDLAND tour, this album gave us a look at how SPEED has matured vocally and musically. As mentioned, if we wanted their classic hits from the past, finding those best hit albums or previously released albums are not that hard, but for those who grew up along with the group will embrace the group’s new sound and support them now, as they did back then.

With their reunion in 2008 with the single “Ashita no Sora”, SPEED returns with their 16th single “S.P.D.” (which is the acronym for “Splending Pop Dance”) and it becomes the first single pairing the group with foreign producers and not with Ichiji Hiromasa.
For “S.P.D.”, the group collaborates with artists Kye Sones, Peter Martin and Jonathan Shav and lyricist Shungo for a more beat-driven, western R&B style as opposed to the pop style the group is known for. And it’s a song that would reinforce that the group is still capable of dancing and performing, the way they were known back during their teenage years. I definitely dig the beats and arrangement and it definitely gives the group an edgy urban feel with their new track.
The coupling song “UTAKATA” is another urban R&B beat-driven track, a bit more mellower and slower tempo than “S.P.D.” and pairs the group with Mats Lie Skare. Definitely dig the beats for the song and it’s a pretty solid track. I’m definitely loving this song!

As for the DVD, the DVD comes with the music clip for “S.P.D.” and the making of the music video. The music video is pretty awesome as it showcases the choreography of the group and showing that the girl’s still have it. Especially Hitoe who can still bring it to the dance floor. But SPEED looks fantastic in this video and it’s wonderfully directed.
The making of is just as enjoyable. Love seeing the behind-the-scenes of the group showing off their dance choreography and just joking around together behind-the-scenes.
The CD insert is bi-fold featuring the lyrics to the song. Included are inserts for “SPEED LIVE 2009″ and “SPEED WAY” (the official fan club of SPEED).
Overall, this is a wonderful single from SPEED and I hope they continue collaborating with international producers. Definitely a wonderful new chapter for the quartet!
“S.P.D.” is highly recommended!

SPEED – Ashita no Sora (a J!-ENT World Groove CD Single Review)

SPEED is back after nine years with a new single after the announcement that their return will be permanent! Their 15th single “Ashita no Sora”, especially the medley cover of their past hits show a maturity in the vocals of Eriko Imai and Hiro Shimabukuro.

In 2008, after nine years since their last single “Long Way Home” and since the group’s breakup (note: the group have released two more singles and an album in 2003 but it was only a temporary reunion to raise money for charity), SPEED members Eriko Imai, Hiro Shimabukuro, Takako Uehara and Hitoe Arakaki have decided to reunite permanently after years of focusing on their own solo careers.
With this year being the 12th anniversary of SPEED, an official statement was made this past September that the group would reunited permanently and would be releasing their 15th single “Ashita no Sora” (Sky of Tomorrow) and that the single will be produced by their longtime producer Hiromasa Ijichi.
The new single kicks off with “Ashita no Sora”, a mellow upbeat pop track. And you can hear the maturity in the voices of the young women. Especially with Eriko and Hiro and no more of the high pitched vocals that we knew of Hiro in the past. Really good harmony and a solid pop track.
The second track “SOMETHING NEW” is an upbeat dance track. It’s a good pop track which seems more of a coupling track to showcase the quartet’s choreography. More beat driven and a good song, especially when it comes to the chorus. I felt some parts of the vocals were a bit off at one point but overall a good upbeat pop track on this single.
The third track features a medley titled “White Love ~STEADY~Body & Soul 2008″, a cover of hit songs by the quartet which they were known for a decade ago. The medley features 2008 versions of “White Love” features a change in the beats compared to the original and obviously a change in the vocal style of how Hiro approaches the song. Especially with their approach with “STEADY”, I guess you can say that when we heard the song back then, they were young teens and now this song is being sung by women and the maturity of the voices showcase that. As for the hit song that put them on the charts, “Body & Soul” was a track which showcased Hiro’s very high-pitched vocals and interesting enough, there is not one sign of that in this 2008 version.
The CD single is a bi-fold with lyrics and production credits and included is a mini-flier promoting the group’s fan club.
Overall, I think fans will embrace the new SPEED but at the same time, by this single, they will know that the group they loved over a decade ago, is not the same group now. These young women have matured on their own as solo artist and as adults, coming together once again, you hear the maturity of their voices. I found it very interesting to hear these 2008 versions in the medley song and hearing how much the group has changed vocally. Of course, the biggest difference is with Hiro’s vocals. When she was a teenager, her high pitched vocals were a big part of the group. Some loved it and some hated it back then but it was a sign of the times since she was only 12-years-old. So, here she is now at 24 and she has a much better grasp with her vocals and she has matured a lot. As for Eriko, she had control of her vocals at a young age and if anything, there is a maturity in her voice which is a lot better control-wise.
As for Tatako and Hitoe, I believe they have much more of a role now as vocalist than just behind-the-scenes dancers.
It’s important to note that there is a CD+DVD version of this single that was released. So, if you want the music videos, definitely check out the other version. But for this single, it’s a pretty solid return and also a single that will show how much SPEED has changed within the last 12 years.

I can remember when I first saw SPEED. It was actually before the quartet released their first album and it was on the karaoke variety show “Yoru no Hit Parade” which starred fellow Okinawa Actors School artists Amuro Namie and MAX.
The ladies brought the next talent from the school which consisted of vocalist Imai Eriko and Shimabukuro Hiro and background dancers and vocals Uehara Takako and Arakaki Hitoe.
The quartet when they debuted were quite young with Hiro only 12-years-old and the others around 14 and 15 and here they are coming out in Japan which at the time was dominated by the TK family and here were these young spunky girls singing and showcasing choreography.
While fellow Okinawan friends Amuro Namie and MAX have been in the scene for several years, it was a surprise because they simply came out of nowhere and dominated the mid-to-late 90s.
Then the girls released their first CD single “Body & Soul” in 1996 and I just remember how the song just took off on the charts and the ladies were just dominating the airwaves, magazines and CM’s not long after.
In Jan. 1999, I could remember being in Shibuya and “ALL MY TRUE LOVE” playing on the big screen and walking into HMV and picking up that latest CD single and their best album which was released a month prior.
SPEED’s “MOMENT – THE BEST ALBUM” was the quartet’s first best album and it would feature 8 CD singles and coupling songs and a song from an album that would become fan favorites for years to come.
The album would start off with the group’s beautiful ballad “White Love” (their fifth CD single released back in 1997). I was just in love with this song. The lyrics were utterly sad of wanting to be with a love one during the Winter time and promises broken. Each time I listen to this song, I can literally feel the sadness through the vocals. An excellent song!
The second track “ALL MY TRUE LOVE” would be the eighth CD single from SPEED (rel. 1998) and another CD single that would sell over a million copies. An upbeat track that was just fun and energetic to listen to.
The third track “STEADY” is the group’s second CD single released back in 1996. After the group’s first CD single, I was definitely going to buy the second CD single and I could easily remember watching Uehara Takako and Arakaki Hitoe’s dancing and how it caught my eye. The song was used for a drama titled “Itazura na Kiss” and is a fast-paced, energetic song which the group featured cool vocals and cool choreography. Just awesome!
The fourth track “Wake Me Up!” features a “Growin’ Up Mix” on this best album and was the group’s fourth CD single released in 1997. My memories of this CD single was actually the music video which was shot in the Philippines and the group performing in a tropical area. Another cool, energetic track!
The fifth track “ALIVE” (rel. in 1998) is a song that was used for their film “ANDROMEDIA” and if you watched the film and know how the lyrics relate, you just literally want to cry. Because it’s quite sad. The song just really made an impression on me and demonstrates how love is truly alive. A wonderful ballad and a song that I consider my favorite SPEED song of all time.
Just these lyrics alone made an impression on me:
Tooku hanaretemo asu ga mienakutemo
Ai wo tomenaide
Kono umi no hate wa yagate aoi sora e tsuzuiteru
Hitori ja nai
Kono mune ni zutto ai wa ikiteru
Ikite yukou
Ai wa ikiteru
Love is alive
The sixth track is the group’s first CD single “Body & Soul” (rel. 1996) and I can remember these girl’s with so much energy in their basketball jersey’s in Los Angeles and just dancing. That was quite interesting. The CD single was fun and it was definitely an eye-opener of having these girls come out of nowhere and really doing something different at that time that was not TK-related.
The seventh track “Namaiki” and ninth track “Nettaiya” were coupling tracks. “Namaiki” for “White Love” and “Nettaiya” for “Wake Me Up!”. “Nettaiya” is actually another favorite song of mine by the group and had an actual music video for it. The song was a bit controversial because it was about loving someone so much, wanting to be with them, sleep with them and they are not there. And of course, the controversy was that these young girls in their early teens were singing such a song.
The eighth track “Go! Go! Heaven” was the group’s third CD single (rel. 1998) and I just remembered the girl’s trying to be dangerous with their dance choreography but yet retaining that sweetness. Of course, tabloids had a different interpretation of the song’s title to have a different, implied meaning but overall, the song was fun, energetic and enjoyed the choreography for the song.
The tenth track “Luv Vibration” was a song from the first album “Starting Over” and featured as a music video in their first VHS release. The song featured the girls rehearsing and having fun in what looks to be Saipan. All in all, it was a fun, upbeat track that I enjoyed listening to a zillion times.
The eleventh track “my graduation” was another powerful ballad and the group’s sixth CD single that would continue their trend of selling over a million copies. It was a powerful song that I will remember for hiro’s vocals but also the lyrics for those graduating from school and eventually separating from the person they love as they begin the next stage of their lives.
The twelfth track features a “Christmas Standard” version of “White Love” and feature more of a string arrangement and the thirteenth track is the karaoke version of their hit song.
The CD insert booklet would feature lyrics to every track but also include a lot of pictures of the group in the snow, riding on a sled and having fun.
The packaging was quite interesting as the cardboard box opened up on all four sides and fit into a plastic sleeve.

At the time of this release, this best album was just incredible because it featured all of their chart topping hits from 1996-1998 and those tracks, even listening to it over a decade later still sounds fresh and doesn’t even show its age at all.
There are simply too many awesome hits on this album to ignore and before they broke up and released “DEAR FRIENDS 1 and 2″, this was simply the album to get and if you can still find this album for a great price, it’s highly recommended!
In fact, I even recommend “MOMENT – THE BEST ALBUM” because it strictly features SPEED songs during their peak and these songs were just fun, sad, passionate and overall enjoyable.
It’s nearly ten years since the release of this album and hearing it again and knowing that SPEED has announced their return is just a great feeling!
All in all, this best album is highly recommended!

SPECIAL FEATURE: Off Shot – 15:48

When it comes to hiro (Shimabukuro Hiro) or any other member of SPEED, I always look forward to their music. Having watched SPEED since before they released their first CD single, purchasing their first CD single, album, VHS video, etc.
Earlier in 2007, we have seen the release of Uehara Takako’s collection and last year was the release of the special limited edition box set release from hiro.
Hiro has always had that distinct voice because of her high pitched vocals and she added something special to SPEED because of those vocals.
Since SPEED broke up, from August 1999 from her first CD single release of “AS TIME GOES BY” up to her 13th CD single “Hero*”, a special box set was released.
The box set contains three disc’s. The first being her singles collection which contains a total of 16 songs (13 CD singles) and includes “Mitsumete Itai” (a solo song that was on SPEED’s “ALL MY TRUE LOVE” CD Single) and two unreleased songs “What’s up!” and “Send My Love for you”.
The second disc features a remix collection which includes ten songs. Remixes feature a Latin-style for songs such as “Ai ga haiteru” and “clover”, others incorporating a very cool underground style that goes from jungle to techno to trip hop. A very good balance of remixed music, pumping new life into her CD singles. Definitely thought the remix album was very fresh and unique for her music which is a great addition to the box set.
The third disc is a DVD featuring her music videos for her 13 CD singles plus the music video for “Mitsumeteitai”.
The DVD features a special feature off-shot showing an interview with hiro, watching hiro shop and behind-the-scenes of the making of her music video that is almost 16 minutes long. For those who have been collecting hiro’s DVD’s, one thing that is not included in the Clip Collection is the music video for “IN SEASON” (from her album “Brilliant”) which was a special music video for the release of her “BRILLIANT ON FILMS” DVD release.
The CD’s are in 3 CD jewel cases and each case featuring a CD insert. The first featuring lyrics to the songs and a picture of the CD single next to the lyrics. The second insert for the remix collection features lyrics. The third disc, the DVD insert is nearly identical to the first insert featuring a picture of the CD single and the lyrics to it.

If you are a hiro fan, you really can’t go wrong with this box set release. Not only do you get all her CD singles (plus three other songs), a remix album and a DVD with all her music video clips from 1999-2006.
Also, a major plus because the label could have separated these to different volumes which many Japanese labels have done with many other artists.
Of course, you can purchase the CD Single Collection and the DVD Clip Collection separately but really, you want the box set because the remix album is definitely worth owning.
So, if you dig her music or are curious and want to make a purchase of a hiro release, I highly recommend checking out the Special Box.

After receiving their first #1 hit single with “Go! Go! Heaven”, SPEED returns with their fourth CD single “Wake Me Up!”.
For those who are not familiar with who SPEED is and what kind of group they are, the quartet are from Okinawa and consist of vocalists Eriko Imai, Hiro Shimabukuro and background vocals/dancers Takako Uehara and Hitoe Arakaki. The group are like the little sisters of Namie Amuro and MAX because they came from the same Okinawan performance school and all host the show “Yorumo Hit Parade”.
The group made a big impression when they debuted last August with their first single “Body & Soul” and now here we are a year later with “Wake Me Up!”. A catchy upbeat pop song! For those who have not watched the music video, the music video features the group going to the Philippines and filming on the white sand of what looks to be a beach in Boracay.
But the song features a more funky feel to it and overall, another catchy song from the group.
The coupling track is titled Nettaiya and that translates to “humid night” and about a girl who dreams she can be with a boy that she loves and is somewhat of a sad ballad. The music video actually shows the facial expressions of the girls singing the song and they are looking somber, almost in tears.
Overall, “Wake Me Up!” is another fantastic single to celebrate the group’s first year anniversary and is definitely recommended!

SPEED is back with their third single and I have no doubt that this is another single that is going to be another #1 hit single for the group and continue their domination of the music charts!
“GO! GO! HEAVEN” is an upbeat, fast pop track and a song that is currently be used as the theme for Asahi’s Mitsuya commercials. Definitely faster than any of their previous songs but the vocals are solid, catchy and addictive! The only thing that I found very odd though is how certain media has tried to make the title seem controversial.
For me, “GO! GO! HEAVEN” is just a cool slang but there are some media trying to say that the song is spotlighting young girls prostituting themselves to 55-year-old men? Yeah… Whatever.
The song is a solid SPEED single and the choreography they have shown on stage, especially their music video is pretty awesome!
As for the coupling track, “oyasumi” (translates to “Good Night”) is a song that I didn’t listen to much because at first I thought the song was quite simple arrangement but the more I started listening to it, I fell in love with the song especially the chorus. It’s a mid-tempo groove but it’s that chorus that really grabs you.
The final two tracks are the instrumental versions of both vocal tracks.
Overall, another awesome release from SPEED and I’ve said it before with “Steady”, this is a group that is not going to fade out anytime soon. “GO! GO! HEAVEN” is definitely recommended!

When “Body & Soul” was released, I never would have imagined of how high the young female pop group SPEED would be at. For the last three months, these four young teens are now the hottest thing in Japan as they grace magazine covers, TV appearances and more.
As I said in my review for their first single, it all comes down to their second single and we will see if SPEED was a fluke or if they are the real deal and here we are now with their second single “Steady” which is being used for the Japanese drama “Itazura na Kiss”. And I will come out and say it… SPEED is definitely the real deal!
The group consists of lead vocalists Eriko Imai and Hiroko Shimabukuro and background dancers Takako Uehara and Hitoe Arakaki and I have seen the girls perform this song on stage and once again, I am impressed with the amount of choreography that goes on with this group. These girls have great stage presence and this song is not only cool to listen to, it’s an addicting single that really showcases the vocals of Eriko Imai and Hiro Shimabukuro. On TV, we see how Takako Uehara and Hitoe Arakaki shine as dancers. This is a solid track!
As for the coupling track, “HAPPY TOGETHER”, it’s standard J-Pop fare that I’m sure other fans will enjoy, I found it as an average, fun track with all girls singing in unison. A happy upbeat track. The remaining two tracks are the instrumentals of both vocal tracks.
Also, included with this single is a black shiny sticker with SPEED in silver letters.
Overall, another wonderful followup to “Body & Soul”… “Steady” is an awesome J-pop single worth checking out!
