What is “Bleach?”

For those who are not so familiar with “Bleach”, “Bleach” has a strong fan following and since its run began back in 2001, series creator, writer and illustrator Noriaki “Tite” Kubo has been hard at work, continuing to crank chapter after chapter for Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan and with the success of the series extending out to films, OVA’s, feature films and video games and other merchandise.

Because of its airing on the Cartoon Network and it being featured on Shonen Jump magazine, “Bleach” has gone on to become a fan favorite in America but also fans all over the world.

A Brief History of what “Bleach” is about

“Bleach” is a story about a guy named Ichigo Kurasaki who has a gift in which he can see spirits. One day, he saw a Soul Reaper (one who can govern the flow of souls between the human world and the afterlife) named Rukia Kukichiki who has come to find a Hollow (a lost soul). She ends up being wounded in battle when she tried to defend Ichigo and so she illegally transfers her reiatsu (spiritual pressure) to him, so that he can defeat the Hollow. But during the process, he nearly takes all of her energy and becomes a Soul Reaper himself and defeats the Hollow quite easily. So, the first storyline arc features Rukia now powerless stranded in the human world until she has the time to recover her true powers, while Ichigo fills in and battles Hollows in her place. And with each fight, Rukia starts to notice something special about Ichigo’s abilities.

The second storyline arc of “Bleach” features the Soul Society wanting to sentence Rukia to death for transferring her powers to Ichigo. His friends also begin to develop special abilities. His childhood friend, Orihime Inoue, is given special abilities courtesy of her loving brother who has turned into a Hollow. Yasutora “Chad” Sato is Ichigo’s tall friend (who is half Japanese/half Mexican) who suddenly becomes aware of spirits and develops an ability to have a special armored right arm that has special abilities. And Ichigo’s rival/friend, Uryu Ishida, who is a descendant of a hollow hunting group known as the Quincy and are enemies of the Soul Reapers.

As their adventures have continued, we have seen Ichigo and his friends getting stronger, developing new abilities and taking on their most difficult foes yet but also earning the respect of his friends and the Soul Society, having saved their lives time and time again. But this time around, there comes a new enemy that may be so powerful that Ichigo may not be able to take them on…

Enter the Vandenreich!

The Current Storyline

We have only heard of how the Quincies had perished after a long feud with the Soul Reapers. The Soul Reapers which believed in having the soul of a hollow crossover to the Soul Society, while the Quincies believed in the total destruction of the hollow’s soul. And while the two had tried to work out their dispute, in the end, it let do a war in which the Soul Reapers vanquished the Quincies.

With only Uryu Ishida thought to be the last Quincy alive, in volume 55 of “Bleach”, it was revealed that one of the deadly Quincy’s from the past, Yhwach, was not killed and has assembled a group known as the Vandenreich to eliminate all Soul Reapers and destroy the Soul Society.

Many have gone missing in Karakura Town and while the Vandenreich have made their presence known to Captain Yamamoto by killing 1st Division Lt. Sasakibe. Also, Hueco Mundo Arrancars have been attacked by the Hueco Mundo Army led by Quilge Opie who are trying to force the Arrancars to join them or else be killed.

As Nel goes to the human world to beg for Ichigo to save Hueco Mundo, Ichigo, Kisuke Urahara, Chad and Orihime hurry to Hueco Mundo to see what is happening. And with the distraction caused in that area, Yhwach orders the Vandenreich to attack the Soul Reapers in their home area inside the Seiretei and the top Quincy combatants of the Vandenreich, the Stern Ritter continues their destruction by trying to kill all Soul Reaper captains.

And the battle continues as Mayuri Kurotsuchi (with assistant Nemu Kurotsuchi) take on Pernida Parnkgjas, while Shunsui Kyoraku takes on Lille Barro and we finally learn the truth of Soul Reaper Nanao Ise!

With the latest 71st volume of “Bleach”, these battles between the Soul Reapers and Sternritter have continues.

With a total of 74 issues, we are now nearing the end of the series and whether or not you love or hate how Tite Kubo has extended these battles for many volumes and years, everything is now coming to the final volumes.

And in this volume, Mayuri Kurotsuchi takes on Pernida Parnkgjas and the battle concludes with Nemu Kurotsuchi being sacrificed as a final resort against Pernida Parnkgjas and we see how that plays out.  Very fascinating and as always, a fascinating observation to see how Mayuri plans in advance.

We also see Shunsui Kyoraku in the battle of his life, as one of the most powerful captains, he must take on Lille Barro, but how can you beat someone who is literally unkillable?

But the manga volume finally reveals why Shunsui wears that kimono but most importantly, we learn the truth about soul reaper Nanao Ise and her connection with Shunsui.

It’s quite exciting especially to see how these two battles go all out and seeing Mayuri and Shunsui put their lives on the line against their opponents.

And the artwork and action is always well-done by Tite Kubo.  The problem is that for people who were invested in reading the stories of Ichigo Kurosaki, are surprised to find out that long ago that it became less about Ichigo and the volumes focused on the Soul Reapers.  So, you go through many volumes without full-on stories with Ichigo and friends and this one of those volume.   Are they in this volume… yes.  But probably just a 4-5 pages and that’s it.

“Bleach” vol. 71 is an action-packed volume and is more geared to the dedicated readers of “Bleach” who have followed the series for the longest time.  Storylines that will no doubt entertain loyal followers who stuck around with the manga series to find out how the Soul Reapers vs. Sternritter war will eventually end.  While featuring two battles, it’s no doubt an exciting action-packed volume worth reading!

In vol. 57, as Ichigo tries to hurry back to the Soul Society, he is encased in some object and is unable to escape from it. Meanwhile, Byakuya Kuchiki and Renji Abarai take on Stern Ritter’s “As Nodt”, Shuhei Hisagi takes on Stern Ritter’s “O” [The Overkill] Driscoll Berci and it looks like that without using their Bankai, the Soul Reapers have no chance.

Until Division 1 Captain, Shigekuni Yamamoto Genryusai, the most power soul reaper decides it is time to intervene and try to kill all of the Stern Ritter.

Leading up to a battle between Soul Reaper leader Captain Yamamoto vs. the King of Quincy’s, Yhwach.

In vol. 58, Captain Yamamoto unleashes his bankai on Yhwach, a bankai that is so powerful that he would lost his arm. With the great power of Yamamoto’s Bankai, it was thought to have killed Yhwach but instead, it is revealed that the man who died is one of his followers who has the power to shapeshift.

With many Soul Reapers badly injured or have been slaughtered by the Vandenreich, others try to get Ichigo Kurosaki to fight Yhwach but will Ichigo be powerful enough to take him or the Vandenreich on?

Meanwhile, there may be a group that can help Ichigo fight against Yhwach and its the mysterious and secretive Squad Zero.

In vol. 59, after the death of Captain Yamamoto and the Soul Reapers trying to assess the damages to their corps, Ichigo and Renji are taken in by Squad Zero to partake in their special training in hopes to fight the Vandenreich.

But as the two go through the simple path of meeting Kirio Hikifune, the two must go through the tests of Oh-Etsu Nimaiya, best know as the creator of the zanpakuto that each Soul Reaper is responsible for.

Meanwhile, as Ichigo and Renji undergo training, Kenpachi Zaraki is engaged in a fight to the death with Division 4 Captain Retsu Unohana. But why are these two Soul Reapers fighting to the death?

And last, the biggest reveal from Ichigo’s father of who and what his mother is and why he is special.

In vol. 60, all is revealed of who Ichigo’s parents are and how Ichigo became the person he is today and why his supernatural abilities are unlike others.

But also the biggest reveal of how Ichigo’s mother died and the true identity of Zangetsu.

In volume 61 of “Bleach” as the Vandenreich has removed the protection of the Seiretei and initiated their attack on the Soul Reapers.

The war has begun and are the Soul Reapers ready for battle?

In volume 62 as the battle between the Soul Reapers and the Vandenreich continues but do the Soul Reapers have any chance to fight them since they have no access to their Bankai? Meanwhile, Ichigo has complete his training, but can he get to the Seireitei in time?

In volume 63. The battle continues as Kensei Muguruma and Roujuro Otoribashi takes on the arrogant and very powerful wrestler, Mask de Masculine. Meanwhile Ruki Kuchiki must take on the devious As Nodt. But are these Soul Reapers powerful enough to take on these powerful Vandenreich members?

In volume 64, Soul Reapers Yachiru Kusajishi and Isane Kotetsu are left to fight the powerful Vandenreich, Gremmy Thoumeaux and the “Vanishing Point” Gwenael Lee. But as the Soul Reapers are near defeat, the powerful Kenpachi Zaraki comes to their aid.

In volume 65, Giselle Gewelle, Meninas Mcallon, Liltotto Lamperd and Candice Catnipp are nearly defeating Kenpachi Zaraki but the long awaited moment takes place as Ichigo Kurosaki makes his return!

But was Ichigo Kurosaki’s return all part of the plan of Yhwach in order to invade the Reiokyu?

In volume 66, the feared Gigi has brought out her zombie army and has taken control of fallen Soul Reapers such as Toushiro Hitsugaya to take on Mayuri Kurotsuchi. Also, Stern Ritter “L” Pepe Waccabrada takes on Kuchiki Kouga.

Meanwhile Yhwach unleashes his royal guards, Stern Ritter “M – Miracle” Gerard Valkyrie, Stern Ritter “X – The X-Axis” Lille Barro, Stern Ritter “C – The compulsory” Pernida Parnkgjas and Stern Ritter “D – The Death Dealing – Askin Nakk Le Vaz” on Senjumaru Shutara and Oh-Etsu Nimaiya.

In volume 67, Squad Zero continues to protect the palace but Oh-Etsu Nimaiya must take on Askin nakk Le Vaar, while Ichibe Hyosube must take on Yhwach.

Who will survive and who will perish in this latest battle?

With the latest 67th volume of “Bleach”, Yhwach is much closer in his goals to enter Reiokyu, Oh-Etsu Nimaiya must defend the area and take on Ywach’s royal guard Stern Ritter “D – The Death Dealing – Askin Nakk Le Vaar”.

Meanwhile, Yhwach takes on the great Ichibe Hyosube, as power vs. power, who will win this great battle and who will perish?

In Japan, as of April 2016, Tite Kubo has now released a total of 73 manga releases, with the 67th release in the U.S. , one can hope that Viz Media increases the manga count to an extra issue or two per year, so we don’t have to wait too long to read the next graphic novel. With three “Bleach” manga releases per year, you’re pretty much waiting 5-6 months between each release.

“Bleach” vol. 67 is an action-packed volume as it features the final battle betwen Oh-Etsu Nimaiya and Askin Nakk Le Vaar, while Yhwach takes on the final Squad Zero member standing, Ichibe Hyosube.  And the beginning and end of this great battle is featured in this latest manga volume!

“Bleach” vol. 66 is an action-packed volume but surprising how it avoids the buildup of last volume’s Ichigo Kurosaki storyline to focus more on Mayuri Kurotsuchi and Senjumaru Shutara and Oh-Etsu Nimaiya.  In one hand, it’s great to see many characters being integrated to the storyline, but at the opposite end of the spectrum, it’s trying to elongate a battle for a very long time which may cause frustration and others thinking Tite Kubo has run out of ideas and is just extending the war in order to lengthen the series.

But if you are a long-time “Bleach” fan, if you love action and dig the non-regular characters of the series, you can’t go wrong with “Bleach” vol. 66!

With the latest 65th volume of “Bleach”, the battles continue as the Soul Reapers take on the Stern Ritter.  As the Soul Reapers continue to mount an offensive in hopes to buy time for Ichigo Kurosaki to make his return.

Meanwhile Giselle Gewelle, Meninas Mcallon, Liltotto Lamperd and Candice Catnipp continue to fight the Soul Reapers.  Giselle Gewelle takes on Captain Kurotsuchi, while Ichigo confronts Uryu…but is he friend or foe?

As always, Tite Kubo’s artwork is awesome and he manages to showcase the action and emotions of the character through his panels. But “Bleach” has always been an action-driven manga series and you can’t help but think that this late volume is setting up for big things to come.

In Japan, as of November 2015, Tite Kubo has now released a total of 70 manga releases, with the 65th release in the U.S. , one can hope that Viz Media increases the manga count to an extra issue or two per year, so we don’t have to wait too long to read the next graphic novel.  With three “Bleach” manga releases per year, you’re pretty much waiting 5-6 months between each release.

Overall, “Bleach” vol. 65 is an action-packed volume and it’s one that everyone is hoping to happen and that is to have Ichigo Kurosaki return to the Soul Society and kick some major butt.  But having watched how Tite Kubo draws the story out for a lengthy chapter, I’m actually curious of how long this Soul Reaper vs. Quincies storyline.  Because dragging it out too long, would really be a major drag to the storyline.

For longtime “Bleach” fans who have stayed with this series this long and love action-driven storylines, “Bleach” Vol. 65 is recommended!

Which leads us to volume 63.

With the latest 64th volume of “Bleach”, Kenpachi Zaraki is a Soul Reaper that we have seen grow in power.  The last we have seen him, he challenged Captain Unohana in order to kill her in a respectable battle for power and the name.

Now that Kenpachi Zaraki has grown in power, he must now take on the toughest Vandenreich enemy he has faced, Gremmy Thoumeaux.  As Gremmy doesn’t even have to lower a finger, he can just imagine what he wants to do in defeating his enemy, how can Kenpachi defeat this untouchable enemy?

We also get to see Yachiru Kusajishi take on Vandenreich’s Stern Ritter “V”, “Vanishing Point” Gwenael Lee in this action-packed volume of “Bleach”.

As always, Tite Kubo’s artwork is awesome and he manages to showcase the action and emotions of the character through his panels. But “Bleach” has always been an action-driven manga series and you can’t help but think that this late volume is setting up for big things to come.

Overall, “Bleach” vol. 64 is a fantastic all-action volume and will no doubt be a quick read due to how much the action dominates each page.  But it’s an exciting battle which leads into something that readers have been waiting for.

For longtime “Bleach” fans who have stayed with this series this long and love action-driven storylines, “Bleach” Vol. 64 is highly recommended!

Tipoff begins and will Shohoku be ready to take on the “Kings”?

Find out in Takehiko Inoue’s “Slam Dunk” vol. 12!

What is “Slam Dunk”?

I can easily remember the popularity of “Slam Dunk” during the early ’90s. Despite being here in America, I would venture to the local Tower Records or travel to Japan Town and head to the Japanese bookstore to pick up the latest Shonen Jump magazine and watching the anime series.

Granted, I came into “Slam Dunk” several years late but I recognized how popular the manga and anime series was, especially the music and sure enough “Slam Dunk” was one of the first anime soundtracks (on cassette) that I had purchased. For me, it was quite intriguing because the sports that I have watched from Japan and manga and anime being based from those sports are typically baseball, soccer or tennis. You just don’t think about basketball but sure enough, “Slam Dunk” captured the essence of high school basketball and the excitement of team dynamics, offense/defense and squaring off against a rival team.

But this is what Takehiko Inoue is known for. A mangaka who is a basketball fan, his manga series is considered iconic in the fact that many kids in Japan played basketball and became interested in the sport because of “Slam Dunk”. In fact, the series was not just popular in Japan but also throughout Asia. The manga sold over 100 million copies in Japan between 1990-1996, earning a Shogakukan Manga Award in 2005 and in 2007, the series received the distinction as “Japan’s Favorite Manga”.

Inoue would eventually follow up with “Buzzer Beater” in 1997 (which he collaborated with ESPN) which was a more farfetched story about basketball ala intergalactic competition. Followed by a samurai manga story titled “Vagabond” in 1998 and back to a basketball manga with “Real” in 2001 (based on people with disabilities in wheelchairs who compete in basketball), so Inoue has a pretty strong following for his works.

And his hits series “Slam Dunk” has been released ala manga in America courtesy of Viz Media.

“Slam Dunk” revolves around a cocky and rough street punk named Hanamichi Sakuragi who is a first-year student at Shohoku High School. He had to be a tough kid growing up. Often teased for his red hair, Hanamichi and his friends would be part of a gang that grouped together to fight other gangs and to show that they are not afraid of no one. And for the tall Sakuragi, he has shown his power in defeating other people in fights.

But there is another side of Hanamichi Sakuragi and that is the fact that he has been rejected by 50 girls in junior high school and now that he’s in high school, #50 tells him that her heart is for Oda who plays for the basketball team.

One day he meets Haruko Akagi, also a first-year student and is the sister of Takenori Akagi, a third-year student and the team captain of Shohoku High School’s basketball team. She also happens to have a crush on star athlete, Kaeda Rukawa, a basketball player that many girls at the high school have fallen for. And because of that, a rivalry between he and Rukawa is instantly created and Hanamichi always feels he must one-up Rukawa (despite Rukawa being a phenom high school basketball player in Japan).

And now Hanamichi Sakuragi wants to prove that he can also be a very good basketball player. And while he doesn’t know the fundamentals of the game, he shows his aptitude of learning quickly.

So, to prove his worth in front of Haruko, Hanamichi joins the Shohoku basketball team which includes Kiyota, Maki, Hisashi Mitsui, Ryota Miyagi and their team manager, Ayako.

In volume 12, the latest volume features the beginning of the Shohoku vs. Kainan game. As Kainan are the overwhelming favorites to compete in the nationals, the underdogs are Shohoku and the guys know that they only way they can go against Kainan is if they give everything they have and play as a team.

But will Kainan coach Takato find out the team’s weakness?

If you love basketball, you will love “Slam Dunk”.

The continuing story of a brute named Hanamichi who has his issues finding a girlfriend (or any girl to like him), but has fallen for Haruko Akagi, the sister of Shohoku High’s Takenori Akagi, the team captain of the basketball team. But knowing that she loves basketball and likes star player Kaede Rukawa. So, Hanamichi is determined in proving to her that he can excel in basketball but also hopefully winning her heart.

But because of Hanamichi’s lack of manners and basketball knowledge, he has gone through training to learn the fundamentals and from Team Captain Akagi and others on the team, he has learned to sharpen his offense and defense slowly. But most recently, learning the importance of rebounding but trying his best not to foul out (a major problem that Hanamichi has yet to figure out).

Having to learn the discipline of being a master rebounder, now Hanamichi must prove that he has what it takes to use his height, his strength and rebound skills but most importantly to be a team player.

In volume 12, the team goes against Kainan High School, a team that has made it to the prefectural finals 16 straight years.  And in the final four game, Shohoku must now take on the “Kings” in order to survive and make it to the next stage.  But can they do it?

Tip off begins in volume 12!

Takehiko Inoue’s artwork is simply wonderful. His illustrations have always been a highlight for me and I was always amazed of how he captured movements, the offensive and defensive stances to how the players penetrate the perimeter and score. But what I enjoyed about each volume is the progression of Sakuragi Hanamichi as an important player on the team and how he went from being this brute to an actual team player.

As for the manga, the detail of Inoue’s artwork is just wonderful, the action, the sweat, the emotions are captured amazingly well on each page.

Overall, “Slam Dunk” is an enjoyable manga series that is not just for basketball fans but for those who want a manga series that captures the spirit of basketball, competition, the strategy involved in the sport but a captivating storyline with cool characters that makes this series worth recommending!

If you love basketball, definitely check out “Slam Dunk” Vol. 12! Highly recommended!

With the latest volume of “Bleach”, volume 63 is an action-intense volume and will no doubt be a quick read as it focuses on the actual battle between the Soul Reapers and the Vandenreich.

From Roujuro Otoribashi and Kensei Muguruma going all out against the crazy but powerful Mask De Masculine.  Meanwhile, Renji Abarai comes to lend some help but this is not the same Renji in year’s past, as his training has made him and his zanpakuto improve to greater heights.

And the same can be said about Rukia Kuchiki, who must take on the sinister As Nodt.  But when the going gets tough, who will be there for Rukia?

As always, Tite Kubo’s artwork is awesome and he manages to showcase the action and emotions of the character through his panels. But “Bleach” has always been an action-driven manga series and you can’t help but think that this late volume is setting up for big things to come.

Overall, “Bleach” vol. 63 is a good volume that doesn’t showcase Ichigo and because of all the action, it is a quick read.  But it’s an interesting fight as Mask De Masculine seems indestructible and As Nodt is quite evil and wicked, so you just don’t know that despite the newfound powers of Ruki and Renji, if their training is good enough to defeat the Vandenreich.

For longtime “Bleach” fans who have stayed with this series this long and love action-drive stories, “Bleach” Vol. 63 is highly recommended!

Retired scientist Omori lives alone on a deserted island while continuing his research into time-travel. His quiet life is interrupted when galactic patrolman Jaco crash-lands and decided to move in with him. Can Jaco get along with the old man long enough to save the Earth from a dangerous threat?

This volume also includes a special bonus chapter introducing Dragon Ball Z hero Goku’s parents!

Akira Toriyama will always be best known as the creator of “Dragon Ball” and “Dr. Slump”, and while the famous manga artist has written many one-shot or short series, rarely do you see Toriyama write a special story that relates to his hit series.

But in 2013, Toriyama created the manga series “JACO: The Galactic Patrolman” which takes place in the “Dragon Ball” world and will surprise but also entertain fans because it features an origin and connects to the “Dragon Ball” world.

But while that is exciting to DB fans, for those wanting something different and new will also find something to enjoy about “JACO: The Galactic Patrolman”.

The story is told by a scientist named Tokunoshin Omori who has built a time machine.  Ten years ago, he talks about an alien named JACO, a Galactic Patrolman who crash landed on a building on an island which Omori lives.

During that time, humankind is about to send a pop star named Azuki who will be boarding a rocket which will orbit around the Earth twice.

Stuck on the island that Omori lives, JACO needs Omori’s help to get his spacecraft to work.  Unfortunately, to power up his spacecraft, he needs a blue metal known as Sky Gold.  Problem is that it would cost 76 million yen for two pounds worth of Sky Gold.

But as Omori needs to head to town to pick up food and supplies, he and a disguised JACO travel to the East Capital, but will they be able to keep a low profile or will JACO’s temper get the best of him?

Meanwhile, what happens when the two meet a girl named Tights and she tells them that she wants to live with them?

When it comes to Akira Toriyama manga titles, there hasn’t really been one that I have disliked.

From one shots like “Sand Land: or “Cowa!”, I have enjoyed Toriyama’s work for the adventures the characters take part in but most of all, he is great at developing his characters in a story.

And the same can be said about “JACO: The Galactic Patrolman” as you read about a grumpy scientist and a cocky galactic patrolman working together in hopes to get JACO back home by fixing his spacecraft.

The problem is that when JACO is brought to an area of civilians, his sense of duty easily bypasses his need to stay low key and he ends up being a wanted person.

Meanwhile, the two end up saving a girl named Tights and she ends up moving in with them.

While in writing, the storyline sounds quite simplistic but the biggest surprise towards the end is when you find out the motivation by Toriyama of creating this series and how it’s tied into the “Dragon Ball” universe.

Suffice to say, it made me excited that we get a new “Dragon Ball” related storyline especially when we see the characters who show up towards the end of this special story.  And I thank Toriyama for creating this special and connecting it with an important DB family that is known for capsules.

Overall, “JACO: The Galactic Patrolman” is a manga that meets the quality of other Akira Toriyama manga releases.  Enjoyable and so much fun, but also connecting the special to the popular “Dragon Ball” series.  Fans of Akira Toriyama’s work or “Dragon Ball” will no doubt want to check out “JACO: The Galactic Patrolman”!
