August 20, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

J!-ENT is partnering with TNT for  a contest giveaway for “Leverage”, “Memphis Beat”, “HawthoRNe”, “My Boys” and “Rizzoli & Isles”.

Here is what is being given away for this contest!

LEVERAGE CONTEST GIVEAWAY (LEVERAGE airs on Sunday)

Contest Giveaway Merchandise: Safecracker PC game and Leverage Season 1 DVD

LEVERAGE follows the adventures of a highly skilled team out to settle scores against those who use power and wealth to victimize others. The gang is led by former insurance investigator Nate Ford (Hutton), who got involved in the con business after his former employer refused to pay for treatment that could have saved his son’s life. His highly skilled team includes Sophie Devereaux (Bellman), a grifter who uses her acting skills to corner her marks; Eliot Spencer (Kane), a “retrieval specialist” with bone-crunching fighting skills; Alec Hardison (Hodge), a gadget and technology wizard who keeps the team informed; and Parker (Riesgraf), a slightly off-center thief adept at rappelling off buildings or squeezing into tight places.

By the end of the second season, the LEVERAGE team had scammed a hedge-fund manager who happened to be in the custody of U.S. Marshals; used Eliot’s martial arts skills to corner a corrupt fight promoter; and took over a private school to recover millions of dollars lost in a Ponzi scheme. They also went head-to-head with an almost identical team of grifters to recover a painting, took down an oppressive sweatshop owner, cornered a fake psychic, freed Nate’s ex-wife from a Ukrainian jail and thwarted a gunrunning scheme by a corrupt mayor.

But for Sophie, her conflicted relationship with Nate left her questioning if she wanted to continue working with the team. She took some much-needed time away, arranging for a friend and fellow grifter to take her place temporarily. But even though Sophie has now returned to the team, there are still some unresolved issues between her and Nate.

The third season of LEVERAGE opens with Nate in prison after having to make a tough choice on the most recent con. He could either allow his team to be arrested or simply give himself up to his nemesis Sterling, a former insurance investigator now working for Interpol. Nate soon discovers, however, that the prison is corrupt. The only way he can bring the crooked officials down is to get his team to help him stage his jailbreak.

But that’s only the beginning of Nate’s challenges. He must also contend with a shadowy intelligence agent known only as “The Italian,” played by actress and model Elisabetta Canalis, who blackmails him into helping bring down a financier. Between “The Italian” trying to control Nate and Nate trying to hold both his crew and his personal life together, it’s looking to be a challenging and twisted summer for the LEVERAGE team.

MY BOYS CONTEST GIVEAWAY (“My Boys” airs on Sunday)

Contest Giveaway Merchandise: “My Boys” Season 2/3 DVD’s

My Boys is  back for Season 4!!! This TBS hit comedy about a group of close friends who always make time to get together, drink beer, play their weekly poker and support each other through the ups and downs of dating, break-ups and career highs and lows.

Brendan is threatened by a professional baseball player meanwhile sparks fly between Kenny and Stephanie, Mike tries his best to get a base hit off a professional pitcher and Bobby helps P.J. write her best article yet. As the group returns to Chicago, Bobby and P.J. stumble upon Kenny and Stephanie kissing…

As a new season blossoms, the friends continue to joke around, bond over beer and poker and have fun, but this time around, they also have to face the realities of life financial issues, career decisions, and getting into serious relationships.

RIZZOLI & ISLES CONTEST GIVEAWAY (“Rizzoli & Isles airs on Monday)

Contest Giveaway Merchandise: The Book “The Apprentice” and T-shirt

RIZZOLI & ISLES follows Boston detective Jane Rizzoli (Harmon) and medical examiner Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander), complete opposites and good friends who solve crimes and bust some of Boston’s most notorious criminals. Growing up at opposite ends of the economic spectrum, the two remain strikingly different from one another in many ways. Jane, the only female detective in Boston’s homicide division, is a tough and gutsy cop who doesn’t let her guard down (except with Maura), dodges her overprotective mother and is better at basketball than her brother. Maura, meanwhile, is usually more comfortable among the dead than the living. She is always impeccably dressed in designer duds with a steady, sometimes icy temperament. And she is working on curbing her tendency to diagnose the people she meets – including her first dates. Jane and Maura often find themselves working together as both use their brilliant minds and expertise to figure out the “who done it” as well as the “how done it” of Boston’s most complex cases.

Despite their many differences, Jane and Maura are best friends, with a quirky and supportive relationship. As Tamaro explains, “That Jane and Maura are so different and yet so effective as a team makes them unusual. There’s something rare about their relationship that I see in the world but not enough on television: two smart, strong, competent women who instinctively drop the protective shield when they’re with each other.”

RIZZOLI & ISLES also stars Lorraine Bracco (The Sopranos) as Angela, Jane’s demanding and intrusive mother; Lee Thompson Young (FlashForward) as Det. Barry Frost, Jane’s somewhat green partner; Bruce McGill (Law Abiding Citizen) as Det. Vince Korsak, Jane’s seasoned former partner; and Jordan Bridges (Dawson’s Creek) as Jane’s brother, Frankie, a patrol cop who hopes one day to become a detective.

HAWTHORNE CONTEST GIVEAWAY (“HawthoRNe” season finale is on Tuesday, August 24th)

Contest Giveaway Merchandise: Retractable Badge Holder

The doors of Richmond Trinity have closed… permanently. That’s the dramatic reality that opens the second season of TNT’s powerful medical drama, HAWTHORNE. This June, the hit series returns with star and executive producer Jada Pinkett Smith (The Women, The Matrix trilogy) as Christina Hawthorne, a Chief Nursing Officer ready for battle on the front lines of a war against declining patient services and hospital budget cuts.

HAWTHORNE is told from the point of view of nurses as they struggle against the odds to deliver the best care possible. The series also stars Michael Vartan (Alias) as Dr. Tom Wakefield, Richmond Trinity’s Chief of Surgery who helped Christina’s husband during the last stages of his cancer; Suleka Mathew (Men in Trees) as Bobbie Jackson, a fellow nurse and one of Christina’s best friends; David Julian Hirsh (Lovebites) as Ray Stein, a nurse struggling with being accepted in a female-dominated profession; Christina Moore (90210) as Candy Sullivan, a nurse with a patriotic sense of duty; Vanessa Lengies (American Dreams) as Kelly Epson, who continues to find her footing as a nurse; and Hannah Hodson (TNT’s The Ron Clark Story) as Christina’s daughter Camille.

As the second season of HAWTHORNE opens, several Richmond Trinity doctors and nurses have been transferred to James River, a failing hospital in terrible shape. There, Christina butts heads with the ER’s head nurse, Gail Strummer (Vanessa Bell Calloway – The District), who is extremely set in her ways. Christina is impressed, however, by the charming Dr. Steve Shaw (Adam Rayner – Mistresses), who hails from England, and the hard-working ER clerk Marcus Leeds (Collins Curtis Pennie – Half Nelson), who has his eye on Camille.

This season, Christina and Tom will try to forge a romantic relationship, especially now that he is no longer serving as Chief of Surgery and can devote more time to patient care and a private life. Bobbie will once again find herself helping out homeless mother Isabelle. Ray’s lust-hate relationship with Dr. Marshall will hit some snags over Ray’s continued feelings toward Candy, who is serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Kelly’s confidence as a nurse will slowly build, thanks in part to her work with a nurse (guest star Sarah Gilbert – Roseanne) who’s even more insecure. And Camille takes a step toward adulthood that her mother isn’t sure she’s prepared to take.

Created by Emmy winner John Masius (St. Elsewhere, Providence, Dead Like Me), HAWTHORNE comes to TNT from Sony Pictures Television in association with Pinkett Smith’s 100% Womon Productions, John Masius Productions and Jamie Tarses’ FanFare Productions. HAWTHORNE is executive-produced by Pinkett Smith; Masius; Glen Mazzara (The Shield, Crash, Life); and Jamie Tarses (My Boys).

MEMPHIS BEAT CONTEST GIVEAWAY (“Memphis Beat” season finale is on Tuesday, August 24th)

Contest Giveaway Merchandise: 3 Guitar Picks, Memphis Original BBQ Sauce and T-Shirt (pick from sizes M, L or XL)

Memphis Beat centers on Dwight Hendricks (Jason Lee), a quirky Memphis police detective with an intimate connection to the city, a passion for blues music and a close relationship with his mother. He is “the keeper of Memphis,” a Southern gentleman who is protective of his fellow citizens, reverential of the city’s history and deeply rooted in its blues music scene.

Despite his impeccable instincts as a detective, Dwight’s loose, relaxed style of police work rubs his demanding new boss, Lt. Tanya Rice (Alfre Woodard), the wrong way. But Dwight may eventually win her over to a Memphis state of mind, especially when he takes the stage at his favorite hangout to perform a legendary song or two.

MEMPHIS BEAT co-stars DJ Qualls as Davey Sutton, a uniform cop who considers himself to be Dwight’s protege. Also starring are Celia Weston (Junebug) as Dwight’s effervescent mother; Sam Hennings (Saving Grace) as Charlie White, aka Whitehead, Dwight’s seasoned, hypertensive partner; Leonard Earl Howze (Barbershop) as Reginald Greenback, a fellow detective struggling to make ends meet with two teenage daughters; and Abraham Benrubi (ER) as Sgt. JC Lightfoot, an officer who uses Chickasaw tribal wisdom in his police work.

MEMPHIS BEAT was created by Liz W. Garcia (Cold Case) and Joshua Harto (The Dark Knight), who also wrote the first two episodes. Harto, who grew up in the South and has spent a lot of time with his country-musician grandfather, sees the show’s setting as a chance to spotlight one of America’s great cities. “Memphis has been largely forgotten in film and TV today,” he says. “It’s where the blues and Johnny Cash and Elvis came from. It’s where Martin Luther King was assassinated and where Isaac Hayes and Aretha Franklin were born and raised. It’s the perfect blend of drama and humor for our show.”

Music is just as vital to MEMPHIS BEAT as its unique characters, drama and humor is the music. “Music is a huge part of this show,” Garcia says. “It has to be. You can’t live in Memphis and not have your life steeped in music. The city has a soundtrack.”

To get that perfect Memphis feel, the production team approached noted blues singer/songwriter Keb’ Mo’. He will provide original compositions and performances for the show to supplement classic Memphis tracks.

MEMPHIS BEAT is executive-produced by Clooney, Heslov, Garcia, Harto, John Fortenberry (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Scott Kaufer (Boston Legal). Sean Whitesell (House M.D.) and Smokehouse Pictures’ Abby Wolf-Weiss are co-executive producers. The pilot was directed and executive-produced by Emmy nominee Clark Johnson (The Shield). Harto and Garcia are a husband-and-wife team. Harto is also an actor.

In Season Two, the Leverage team sets out to recover millions of dollars lost in a Ponzi scheme, stage a deadly virus outbreak, and go head-to-head against a rival crew of slick thieves. Steal from the rich and give back to those who deserve it, giving those who have no chance some leverage.

“LEVERAGE” is the hit TV drama series on TNT executive produced by Dean Devlin (“Godzilla”, “Independence Day” and “Universal Soldier”), Chris Downey (“The King of Queens”) and John Rogers (“Cosby”) and also to see involvement by Jonathan Frakes (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”, “Roswell”) as a director and Amy Berg (“The 4400″) as a writer/producer.

“LEVERAGE” stars Academy Award winner Timothy Hutton (“The Good Shepherd”, “Ordinary People” and “The Last Mimzy”), Christian Kane (“Angel”, “Close to Home”), Aldis Hodge (“Red Sands”, “Friday Night Lights”), Gina Bellman (“Coupling”, “Jekyll” and “Permanent Vacation”), Beth Riesgraf (“Struck”) and Mark Sheppard (“Battlestar Galactica” and “Dollhouse”) who are part of a group of thieves who steal from the corrupt and give to the needy.

For the first season, the series would become a major hit for TNT as it became the #1 program on Tuesday nights with solid ratings for the drama series.  As the series is now approaching its third season, the second season will be available on DVD featuring 15 episodes on 4-DVD’s and plenty of special features!

“LEVERAGE” revolves around former Insurance Investigator Nate Ford (Timothy Hutton) who has exposed scams and recovered stolen items worth millions for his insurance company. But when it came to getting his son’s medical treatment covered, his insurance company denied it and his son died because he was unable to get the treatment he needed.

One day, someone gives Nate a chance to get back at his insurance company, if he teams up with a group of thieves and manages them. In the process, Nate realizes the good that this group can do (and at the same time fulfilling their needs for stealing and making money) and creates a company called Leverage Consulting & Associates which was created to help those with major insurance problems and give them leverage and making sure that what happened to him, will never happen to anyone else.

For the second season, Nate and the Leverage team decide to reunite but this time around, the jobs they have are much more riskier including the group taking on a popular government official and not knowing that Nate’s rival  James Sterling is back and now working for Interpol and is trying to capture Nate.

Leverage Consulting & Associates consists of:

Nathan Ford (Timothy Hutton) – Because of his job as a former insurance fraud investigator for IYS insurance, Nathan (or Nate) is very smart when it comes to his planning and delegating jobs to the group. Unfortunately, since his son’s death, his life has led to alcoholism and a divorce from his wife but with Leverage, it has given him a renewed sense on life and to help people even if it means working with thieves. He is often referred to as “The Black King/White Knight” because his a good guy but now responsible for managing a few of the world’s top thieves.

Sophie Devereaux (Gina Bellman) – Sophie is a terrible actress on stage but she’s also an excellent con woman who specializes in art thefts. She is acquainted with Nathan as he caught her in the act of stealing a painting. There is sexual tension between her and Nathan.

Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane) – A retrieval expert but also an expert in martial arts and weapons. Knows his weapons and how to disarm the opponent. And the temperamental member of the group.

Parker (Beth Riesgraf) – Professional thief, cat burglar and explosives expert. Loves money and often the odd person of the group. Not very good around people.

Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge) – An excellent hacker and computer/technology expert. Knows how to hack into everything, knows the hardware and knows how to fit into any surrounding to infiltrate an area.

Other characters:

Tara Cole (Jeri Ryan) – A con and grifter who ends up teaming up with the Leverage team.

James Sterling (Mark A. Sheppard) – Nate’s former business partner and now rival. Sterling works for Interpol and will do all he can to catch Nate.

VIDEO:

Overall, “LEVERAGE” looks very good for a television drama. Featured in Widescreen, a lot of scenes are done in the indoors and outdoors that is where the series is most vibrant and more colorful. Like most drama series on DVD, it’s when you get into low light situations and you do see artifacting.  But I have to admit that “Leverage” has been one of those titles with very good video and personally, this is one series that I would have loved to see released on Blu-ray.   But overall, for a drama series on DVD, “LEVERAGE” is stylishly cool in terms of visual appeal.

AUDIO:

As for audio, the series is presented in Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround and definitely utilizes the front channels for its explosions and rear surrounds take advantage of action sequences. I discovered use of LFE as well and overall, for a drama series on DVD, “LEVERAGE” sounds great. Dialog is easy to understand and more than enough action sequences on each episode.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“LEVERAGE” features many special features as each disc has optional audio commentary for EVERY episode. The fourth disc is where the majority of the special features are located. Included on the fourth disc are:

  • The Creators of Leverage Q&A – (18:55) Executive producers John Rogers, Dean Devlin and Chris Downey talk to a live audience about how the origins of the show came about and casting the talent for “Leverage”.
  • John Rogers Set Tour – (3:08) Executive Producer John Rogers talks about shooting in Portland, Oregon and a tour of Leverage HQ.
  • Behind the Boom Featurette – (7:14) A featurette on the creation of special effects for “Leverage”.  In this featurette, the creation of a major explosion in a building.
  • “The Hand Job” Spoof Video – (5:08) Actor Aldis Hodge shows people how to do things the Leverage way.
  • Andy Lange Music Featurette – (2:58) Singer/songwriter Andy Lange talks about utilizing his music on the show.  The producers talk about how they came about using Andy’s music on the show.
  • Season 2 Wrap Party Gag Reel – (9:02) Featuring the bloopers from season 2 of “Leverage” plus the cast and crew of “Leverage” doing gags on set.

EXTRAS:

“Leverage – The 2nd Season” comes with a cardboard slip-over case.

From the first episode of “Leverage”, I was sold.  Solid writing, cool characters and overall, the first season was exciting and enjoyable.  The second season turns up the notch as we see more action and also the odds against the team slightly higher.  The characters are truly tested and by the end of the final season, it definitely makes you excited (as well as a bit impatient) for the upcoming third season.

I was very impressed with the first season and each talent really brings their A game to the series. Timothy Hutton plays a convincing role as the mastermind of the group; Gina Bellman brings that sexiness that she had in BBC’s “Coupling” to the series but added depth as a true-to-art con artist; It’s great to see Christian Kane again kicking butt since his years on “Angel” and also to see the two talents Beth Riesgraf and Aldis Hodge definitely shine in this series. The characters are well, cast, well-planned, well integrated into the series and I really enjoyed the amount of character development we see in each episode. Despite being thieves, they are all likable in their own way.

If anything, we are starting to see the chemistry of each characters gel and also, I like how things are starting to heat up between Nate and Sophie.  As for the addition of Jeri Ryan to the second season of “Leverage”, she’s a bit of a wildcard.  You can picture her helping the team but at the same time, but unlike the other members, she’s been used to the con life for awhile and she can play both sides and thus, it’ll be interesting to see how her character is utilized in the future.

I also felt the writers bringing back Mark Sheppard for Jim Sterling was smart.  He is the true antagonist for the group and how the ended the second season definitely will have viewers wanting to know what happens for the third season.

Usually, there tends to be some drop-off when it comes to storytelling but the writers managed to keep things exciting and fresh, now that we are seeing the group becoming more mobile as they take on various jobs nationwide.  But this time, the jobs they are taking on are much riskier and can lead to their downfall.

For those who haven’t watched the first season, it helps to know the background and why Nate is driven to work with a group of thieves but the series is easy to follow, so it’s not going to be hard to follow the storyline for season two.  But I do recommend watching the first because it goes into the team dynamics and also learning about Nate’s drive for what he is doing.

As for the DVD, similar to the last season’s release, it’s packed with special features and commentary.  I think that fans of the show will be entertained by the amount of content included.  The commentary tracks are actually informative and there are a good amount of humor in the commentary tracks, in fact, no worries about the commentary being dry as they keep the commentary tracks quite lively.

Overall, “Leverage” fans will enjoy this latest DVD release.   Fifteen exciting and enjoyable episodes, plenty of special features content and like the first release, “Leverage – The 2nd Season” is quite solid and I doubt anyone will be disappointed.  Definitely recommended!

“LEVERAGE” stars Academy Award winner Timothy Hutton (“The Good Shepherd”, “Ordinary People” and “The Last Mimzy”), Christian Kane (“Angel”, “Close to Home”), Aldis Hodge (“Red Sands”, “Friday Night Lights”), Gina Bellman (“Coupling”, “Jekyll” and “Permanent Vacation”), Beth Riesgraf (“Struck”) and Mark Sheppard (“Battlestar Galactica” and “Dollhouse”).

The series would become a major hit for TNT as it became the #1 program on Tuesday nights with solid ratings for the drama series.

Leverage Consulting & Associates consists of:

Nathan Ford (Timothy Hutton) – Because of his job as a former insurance fraud investigator for IYS insurance, Nathan is very smart when it comes to his planning and delegating jobs to the group.

The series also features quite a bit of talent which include Mark A. Sheppard (“Battlestar Galactica) as James Sterling, Nate’s former business partner and now rival. Kari Matchett (“24″, “Heartland” and “Invasion”) as Nate’s ex-wife Maggie,  “Star Trek” talents Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Armin Shimerman.  And appearances by Lauren Holly, D.B. Sweeney, Sara Rue, Jeremy Roenick and many more.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

Overall, “LEVERAGE” looks very good for a television drama.  Featured in Widescreen, a lot of scenes are done in the indoors and outdoors and you get many colorful scenes.  Like most drama series on DVD, it’s when you get into low light situations and you do see artifacting.  But overall, for a drama series on DVD, “LEVERAGE” is stylishly cool in terms of visual appeal.

Personally, I really hope that Paramount considers a Blu-ray release of “LEVERAGE”.  There are some really awesome visuals in this series and I can imagine how detailed and excellent this series would benefit from a High Definition transfer.  In fact, I hope Paramount considers it because this series is slick and I can imagine how awesome it would be on HD.  Overall, for a DVD release, audio and picture quality is slightly better than many series on DVD and the fact that there is three episodes instead of the typical four per DVD is a plus on the video end.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“LEVERAGE” features many special features as each disc has audio commentary for every episode which is magnificent.   The fourth disc is where the majority of the special features are located.  Included on the fourth disc are:

  • Leverage: Behind the Scenes - (12:40) Dean Devlin shows us behind-the-scenes of the making of “LEVERAGE”.  Interviews with the talents and crew about their characters and the series.
  • Anatomy of a Stunt Fight - (3:23) How a stunt scene is rehearsed which includes a fight scene with Christian Kane’s character Eliot and Christian discussing his fight scene and preparing for it.
  • The Cameras of Leverage – (2:14) A featurette primarily on the many cameras used for the filming “LEVERAGE”.  I don’t think I have ever seen a featurette focused on the cameras but film fans, especially those interested in the technical parts of filming will definitely enjoy this feature.
  • Leverage gets renewed - (2:52) Every talent and crew member gathers for a meeting with Dean Devlin and those who are not present are featured via webcam and placed between each seat of the actors.  Very fun featurette as everyone awaits the big news from TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies Executive Vice President Michael Wright.
  • Beth Riesgraf’s Crazy Actress Spoof - (5:02) Beth Riesgraf vs. the Writers of Leverage.  An interesting spoof starring Beth Riesgraf (who plays Parker) who is a diva actress not so happy that her character has to deliver a zombie baby and taking out her anger at employees.  Very humorous and enjoyable!
  • Deleted Scenes - The series features two deleted scenes from “The 12-Step Job” (3:30) and “The Second David Job” (:31).

From the first episode, I was sold.  I absolutely enjoyed “LEVERAGE” and forget about “Ocean’s 11″, this drama series features very cool characters, well-written, great locations for filming, witty, smart, stylish and overall, just cool!

Despite being thieves, they are all likeable in their own way.

It’s one thing to have the typical series special features but “LEVERAGE” really goes all out with commentary for each episode and also, the special features that are on this DVD are probably a first (a featurette about the series getting renewed and a featurette on the cameras used on the series) and were quite enjoyable.  Again, I really wish Paramount considers a Blu-ray release of this series.  With its slick production and overall action sequences, I would love to watch it on High Definition.

I was pretty surprised to see the amount of technology used in the series but how slick the production is.  All characters are used effectively and each episode was just fun, smart and just enjoyable.  I was very impressed.

Overall, this DVD release and the complete series is magnificent and is highly recommended!
