Kobe Bryant Issues Statement Regarding Comment Made In Last Night’s Game, Kobe fined $100,000
April 13, 2011 by J!-ENT · Leave a Comment
Kobe Bryant has been one of the few NBA players that is being closely watched for his number of technical fouls as of late and once again, he got a technical during a game against the San Antonio Spurs.
While cameras tend to focus on the player’s faces during a major foul, Kobe Bryant was seen looking at the ref saying “fu**ing fa**ot”.
Needless to say, Kobe Bryant was soon hot on the hot seat as many felt offended by the comment. Bryant has released the following statement:
“What I said last night should not be taken literally. My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period. The words expressed do NOT reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were NOT meant to offend anyone.”
Meanwhile NBA commissioner David Stern fined Bryant $100,000 for the comment. Stern said, “Kobe Bryant’s comment during last night’s game was offensive and inexcusable. While I’m fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated. Accordingly, I have fined Kobe $100,000. Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society.”

A rivalry renewed and a hotly anticipated rematch two years in the making! The 2010 NBA Finals exceeded the hype as the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics, the two most successful franchises in NBA history, picked up where they left off in 2008 when the Celtics defeated the Lakers to earn the title. The Lakers, led by 2010 Finals MVP Kobe Bryant, took the series to Game Seven and, down by 13 points in the third quarter, came back to repeat as champions in the most-watched NBA game in over a decade. Relive the dramatic setbacks, comebacks, and late-game heroics of this epic series.
This definitive box set contains all seven games in their entirety, with exclusive bonus features that are your all-access pass to both teams on the court and in the locker room.

When it comes to NBA Championships, the largest rivalry in sports is between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. A rivalry which was born in 1959 when the Lakers were still known as the Minneapolis Lakers and both teams would meet up in the finals a total of 12 times.
The Celtics would take the championship in their first eight meetings (1959, 1962-1963, 1965-1966, 1968-1969) but the Los Angeles Lakers led by Magic Johnson would take the next two championships in 1985 and 1987.
Many have hoped for another rivalry on the floor between the two teams and in 2008, the top seed of both conferences which featured the Lakers led by Kobe Bryant vs. the magic three of the Boston Celtics led by Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. And for Los Angeles Lakers fans, one of the most painful moments was watching the Lakers lose in game six of the 2008 NBA finals to the Celtics.
While the Lakers would rebound and claim the championship against the Orlando Magic in 2009, what fans wanted was revenge for the 2008 loss and to see the Lakers vs. the Celtics one more time in the NBA Championships. The Lakers were expected in the championships as they dominated the season but for the East, eyes were on Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers but the biggest shock was the Celtics dismantling both the Orlando Magic and the Cleveland Cavaliers to make it to the finals. And thus, the revenge matchup that Lakers fans have wished for had arrived.
The two most successful franchises in the NBA were destined to go against each other and these Lakers have grown since their loss against Boston. This time around, the Lakers would have the addition of skilled defensive player Ron Artest and also strong young players from the bench. Also, this time around, the Lakers would have home court advantage.
And what a nail-biter the 2010 NBA Finals came to be as the Lakers and Celtics took it all the way to game 7.
GAME 1: Boston Celtics (89) vs. Los Angeles Lakers (102)
GAME 2: Boston Celtics (103) vs. Los Angeles Lakers (94)
GAME 3: Los Angeles Lakers (91) vs. Boston Celtics (84)
GAME 4: Los Angeles Lakers (89) vs. Boston Celtics (96)
GAME 5: Los Angeles Lakers (86) vs. Boston Celtics (92)
GAME 6: Boston Celtics (67) vs. Los Angeles Lakers (89)
The final game 7 and the game could have went either way but it was decided in the final two minutes of the game as the Los Angeles Lakers would win the game with 83 points to Boston’s 79.
The Los Angeles Lakers would repeat and would become the NBA Champions. And to celebrate the Los Angeles Lakers amazing win against the Boston Celtics, Image Entertainment is releasing a 4 Blu-ray Disc and an 8-DVD set. The Blu-ray set would feature all seven games in its entirety, presented in 1080p High Definition and lossless DTS-HD Master Audio Stereo. And both sets would include the post-game press conferences plus the mini-movies.
Two games are presented in the first three discs, while the seventh game is on the fourth and contains the majority of the special features. You can play the entire game, select a quarter, view the score quarter breakdowns and the stats.

I was raised in a Laker household and my family including myself are hardcore Lakers fans.
When it comes to the playoffs, this is when I get into the mode where during a game, I don’t want to be bothered. I don’t want to be interrupted, it’s me and television set and literally me cheering or screaming when things are not going right. Needless to say, when the Lakers lost the championship back in 2008, as a fan, it was a big hit to the stomach. I literally went through a day or two of withdrawals of not wanting to speak to anyone, not wanting to watch TV to avoid any post-news coverage, like many other Lakers fans, I was devastated. Because a Lakers and Celtics matchup in the finals, they rarely happen and when they do, you know it’s going to be a war.
I still have my old VHS tapes when the Lakers beat the Celtics back in ’87 and I can easily remember as a kid, being into the finals and literally biting my nails and awaiting the call from my father working late at work to get a report of the game. Lakers and Celtics…1985 and 1987, two finals that I will always remember but I just hoped for another shot of the LA Lakers going against the Celtics in the finals. Revenge for the loss of 2008 and see the 2009 champs kick butt in 2010 and what a fantastic year the Lakers have had.
As many people were expecting Lebron James and Cleveland Cavaliers or the Orlando Magic being in the finals, literally no one had expectation for the Celtics to be in the finals but they proved that their team was the better team in the Eastern conference as they dismantled the Cavs and thumped the Magic, I had nothing but a grin on my face because the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Boston Celtics rivalry was back in full force for the 2010 NBA Finals.
There was no way I would have expected the Celtics to be up 3 games to 2 and so it was literally an excruciating feeling of hoping the guys can win game 6. And as for game 7, what a nail-biter. There was no way to tell who was going to win. Even the final two minutes when Ron Artest made his three, Celtics responded with a three, Lakers were back in the lead, Rondo makes a three pointer to cut the lead into two. This was one of the best game 7′s I have seen and to see the Lakers come back after being behind 13 points and winning the finals, what a sweet victory this was and a memorable 2010 NBA Finals!
And what a great way to relive the finals and to watch it on Blu-ray. Colors are vibrant, detail much more evident. So, evident that even people sitting in courtside become much more visible on Blu-ray. So, the fact that we get the entire matchup of all seven games of the 2010 finals on Blu-ray (and DVD) is fantastic. All post-game commentary and also post-game interviews (as well as the press conferences) are included on this Blu-ray release. And pretty much, this set is pretty much all Lakers fans can ask for.
It’s important to note that you don’t get the losing team interviews and that after game seven during the celebration of the Lakers win and award ceremony, ESPN does have their logo featured small but you can see it on the upper right corner of the screen.
Sure, I would love to have had a featurette on both teams via a recap of the Western and Eastern Conference playoffs and seeing the journey that got the Lakers and Celtics to the finals. But this is not the usual NBA championship DVD’s that show those clips from the playoffs, this one primarily focuses on the actual seven games in the finals.
As for audio, I’m glad we get a lossless soundtrack but I hope in the near future, the NBA considers capturing the stadium ambiance and sounds and present these games in DTS-HD MA 7.1 versus 2.0. It would be great to have that immersive soundtrack in your living room and hearing the stadium erupt right in your living room or entertainment center. But for the most part, this release is front channel driven and audio is crystal clear courtesy of the lossless soundtrack.
You do get a good number of special features such as the mini-movies and certain press conferences are included, especially the post-game 7 Ron Artest’s jovial press conference which will definitely be remembered.
Overall, for fans of the Los Angeles Lakers, especially those who still have the games still on their DVR harddrive, this is the best presentation of the game on Blu-ray via 1080p and not in 720p and it looks fantastic. But if anything, this collector’s edition would make a great purchase or gift for the hardcore Lakers fan and definitely worth owning because it features the Lakers beating the Boston Celtics in the 2010 NBA Finals. How sweet is that?
If you are a Los Angeles Lakers fans, this collector’s edition Blu-ray is definitely recommended!

Lee and cinematographer Matthew Libatique spent the day with the Los Angeles Lakers superstar. Utilizing 30 cameras and wiring Bryant for sound, Lee brings the audience onto the court with Bryant as his Lakers battle the San Antonio Spurs in a game with major playoff implications. “Kobe Doin’ Work is brilliant — Spike Lee reveals what it really takes, day in and day out, for Kobe Bryant
to play basketball at such an elite level,” said Tori Stevens, Vice President, Multi-Platform Development, ESPN. “Fans will see, up close, how Kobe thinks about the game, his regimen and his work ethic.

During the 2007-2008 season, the Los Angeles Lakers found its groove as the team had the best record in the West, Kobe Bryant who started out the season with media questioning if he will continue to be a Laker answered all questions on the court as he had a magnificent year and many people feeling the young basketball star deserves to be the MVP.
Unfortunately for Lakers fans, that same season, the team came up short in the championship series against the Boston Celtics but rebounded the following year winning the championship in 2008-2009 and many praised the leadership of Bryant.
But director Spike Lee wanted to create a film and give fans a chance to see the real Kobe Bryant before, during and after a game. So, Kobe Bryant, Coach Phil Jackson and the Los Angeles Lakers organization let Spike Lee have Bryant mic’d, 30 cameras all over the stadium all focusing on Kobe Bryant and capturing not only the athlete in play but also giving people the chance to hear all the trash talking, the play calling, what goes on in the bench, what goes on during half time and just unlimited access to Kobe Bryant as the Los Angeles Lakers took on the San Antonio Spurs for a pivotal game that would give the Lakers home court advantage.
You literally start off when Kobe arrives to the Staples Center and watch him how he prepares and watch him lead and encourage the team through four quarters. Although the full game is not shown, you do get over an hour of basketball footage and hear how things are on the court uncensored.
While watching the film, you can hear audio commentary by Kobe Bryant as he explains certain scenes from the game and also his conversations with director Spike Lee.

![]()
VIDEO & AUDIO:
“Kobe Doin’ Work: MVP Limited Edition” is presented in widescreen (1:78:1) – Enhanced for 16×9 Televisions. Picture quality is very good as Spike Lee made sure the game was captured from various angles. High above, right on the court, on the big screens, you name it… Lee covered all angles and gives an intimate portrait of the MVP.
Audio is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. For the most part, the film is front and center channel driven. You hear everything on court. The audience, the players, the music, the squeaking of the sneakers on the court, the bouncing of the basket ball, the trash talking, the play calling….you hear it all throughout the film’s soundtrack.
Kobe Bryant’s commentary doesn’t get in the way of the dialogue on film. For the most part, commentary is understandable.
For the most part, editing is well done and not dizzying at all. Spike Lee and cinematographer Mattew Libatique did a wonderful job covering the game but most importantly capturing video and audio of and around Kobe Bryant.
Subtitles are in English SDH, Spanish and French.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
“Kobe Doin’ Work: MVP Limited Edition” comes with a special Upper Deck Kobe Bryant trading card and the following special features:
- Introduction to the Film by Spike Lee: (:49) An introduction by Spike Lee talking about what they did on that night.

- Deleted Scenes – The Unseen Fourth Quarter – (9:21) The fourth quarter that was not featured in the film. No audio commentary by Kobe Bryant but this featurette showcases Kobe Bryant and his teammates during the game against the San Antonio Spurs captured by Lee’s 30 cameras.
- Deleted Scenes – Press Conference – (2:53) A short press conference with Kobe and the media after the game.
- Photo Montage – (4:30) Photography of Kobe Bryant during the game. Awesome photography montage played along with Bruce Hornsby’s piano playing.

“Kove Doin’ Work: MVP Limited Edition” was definitely because you actually get to hear a lot of the play calling, the trash talking and what takes place on the bench, at half time and more. This is probably the most unlimited access I have seen in a sports related film and really gives you an idea of what goes through Kobe Bryant’s head. On the court, he’s observing and directing his team, on the bench…he’s really looking for holes in the opponent’s defense. And even in half time, he’s really into discussing what he sees and how the team can overcome in the second half. But for the most part, Kobe Bryant is a class act during the commentary. He’s complimentary to his teammates and his opponent, he’s a competitor but also seen as a father and husband. You really get to see a side of Kobe Bryant that you just never see on television.
Usually, these type of coverage is censored for television but for this DVD, you get the full uncensored version, the broadcast censored version and also a no commentary version. And I think that Kobe Bryant said it best of what he thinks about this film and that is, during a post-game interview, he tries to explain the team dynamics. But through this film, you get to learn how the technical part is done on court. You hear Kobe directing the teammates, knowing when to get in the head of his opponent, switching plays in order to get his teammates into the groove.
So, basketball players can definitely look at this DVD as really instructional. Coaches can definitely showcase this DVD to their players and have them learn from it. And for the casual viewer, it’s just an up-close, personal look at one of the greatest athletes today.
Really, there’s nothing I can complain about this DVD release. If anything, I think there will be more demand for Spike Lee or others to continue this up-close look at how athletes are during the game. Granted, I’m sure some organizations and coaches do not like to give that much access to the viewer of play call discussions but Kobe Bryant addresses it during his commentary saying that basketball is unlike other sports because opponents are going to know what the team is going to do, but it’s all about how the play is executed.
For the parents and coaches (who were thinking of showing this to their high school basketball atheletes), the main feature does contain quite a bit of profanity but there is a censored broadcast version if you are concerned.
Overall, I’m sure Lakers fans will love this release but this is not just for Lakers fans, this is for basketball fans especially those who aspire to be on team, those who want to be better on the basketball court and to learn how leadership is carried on the court and also out from one of best basketball player of all time. “Kobe Doin’ Work: MVP Limited Edition” is definitely recommended!
