In a recent manga review for Daily Yomiuri, Kitagawa Ikuko reviews “Honey and Clover”.
Kitagawa wrote, “There are two types of people in love, the pursuer and the pursued, and all characters in the college love story Hachimitsu to Kurobaa (Honey and Clover) fall into the first category. Their youthful, single-minded, one-way romances are heart-aching and frustrating for the characters and readers alike.”
“The main characters are five students at a four-year art college in Tokyo. They are each trying to find something meaningful in their lives before graduating, and the experience of their pure, achy-breaky loves, whether ultimately requited or not, helps them grow up. The pursuers learn how to make the person they love happy and how to come to terms with their one-sided affection.”
“Writer Chika Umino has developed the lifelike and lovable characters and takes care of the feelings of every one of them. The characters in Hachimitsu to Kurobaa, also known by the abbreviated nickname “Hachi-Kuro,” have made the comic so popular that it has been adapted as a movie and a TV anime, as well as a live-action TV drama that is currently airing on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Fuji TV. Volume 1 of an English-language edition, Honey and Clover (Viz Media, 184 pp, 8.99 dollars), will be released next month.”
