SHALLOW GRAVE – BD & DVD
This diabolical thriller was the first film from director Danny Boyle, producer Andrew Macdonald, and screenwriter John Hodge (the smashing team behind Trainspotting). In Shallow Grave, three self-involved Edinburgh roommates—played by Kerry Fox (An Angel at My Table), Christopher Eccleston (Elizabeth), and Ewan McGregor (Beginners), in his first starring role—take in a brooding boarder. When he dies of an overdose, leaving a suitcase full of money, the trio embark on a series of very bad decisions, with extraordinarily grim consequences for all. Macabre but with a streak of offbeat humor, this stylistically influential tale of guilt and derangement is a full-throttle bit of Hitchcockian nastiness.

AND EVERYTHING IS GOING FINE – BD & DVD
After the death in 2004 of American theater actor and monologist Spalding Gray, director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) pieced together a narrative of Gray’s life to create the documentary And Everything Is Going Fine. Brilliantly and sensitively assembled entirely from footage of Gray, taken from interviews and one-man shows from throughout his career, it is a rich, full portrait—an autobiography of sorts—of a figure who was never less than candid but retained an air of mystery. In essence, this hilarious, moving, and revealing film has become Gray’s final monologue.

GRAY’S ANATOMY – BD & DVD
One of the great raconteurs of stage and screen, Spalding Gray (Swimming to Cambodia), came together with one of cinema’s boldest image-makers, Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic), for Gray’s Anatomy, a spellbinding adaptation of Gray’s 1993 monologue of the same name (cowritten with Renée Shafransky). In it, Gray, with typical sardonic relish, chronicles his arduous journey through the diagnosis and treatment of a rare and alarming ocular condition. For the monologist, this experience occasioned a meditation on illness and mortality, medicine and metaphysics; for the filmmaker, it was a chance to experiment with ways of bringing his subject’s words to brilliant, eye-opening life.

THE SAMURAI TRILOGY – BD & DVD
The Samurai Trilogy, directed by Hiroshi Inagaki (The Rickshaw Man) and starring the inimitable Toshiro Mifune (Seven Samurai), was one of Japan’s most successful exports of the 1950s, a rousing, emotionally gripping tale of combat and self-discovery. Based on a novel that’s often called Japan’s Gone with the Wind, this sweeping saga fictionalizes the life of the legendary seventeenth-century swordsman (and writer and artist) Musashi Miyamoto, following him on his path from unruly youth to enlightened warrior. With these three films—1954’s Oscar-winning Musashi Miyamoto, 1955’s Duel at Ichijoji Temple, and 1956’s Duel at Ganryu Island—Inagaki created a passionate epic that’s equal parts tender love story and bloody action.

THE 39 STEPS – BD & DVD
The 39 Steps is a heart-racing spy story by Alfred Hitchcock (Psycho), following Richard Hannay (Oscar winner Robert Donat of Goodbye, Mr. Chips), who stumbles into a conspiracy that thrusts him into a hectic chase across the Scottish moors—a chase in which he is both the pursuer and the pursued—as well as into an expected romance with the cool Pamela (Madeline Carroll). Adapted from a novel by John Buchan, this classic wrong-man thriller from the Master of Suspense anticipates the director’s most famous works (especially North by Northwest), and remains one of his cleverest and most entertaining films.

Turner Classic Movies and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment To Bring 38 Classic UPA Cartoons to DVD for First Time Ever
Fans of classic animation will have a lot to cheer about this spring, when Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) bring 38 timeless cartoons from the 1950s to DVD for the first time ever.
UPA: The Jolly Frolics Collection is a treasure trove of animated shorts from United Productions of America (UPA), home to such beloved characters as Mr. Magoo and Gerald McBoing Boing. The three-disc set will be sold exclusively through TCM’s online store at http://shop.tcm.com, beginning March 15.
Featuring a video introduction by film critic, writer and historian Leonard Maltin, UPA: The Jolly Frolics Collection is the perfect addition to any animation and classic movie fans DVD library. Each short has been digitally remastered, with audio commentaries by Maltin and animation historian Jerry Beck included on select cartoons. Extensive bonus features include a rare Pencil Test for the short, Christopher Crumpets Playmate (1955), and over 100 examples of production art, marketing materials, and more. The beautiful gate-fold collection is accompanied by a 16 page in-depth booklet featuring historical backgrounds, animator bios, and a timeline of the studio.
Im sure Im not the only animation enthusiast whos been longing to see these great cartoons released on DVD. Its a privilege to be able to introduce them and provide commentary tracks, but its even more exciting to see them so beautifully restored. says Maltin.
Meticulously restored and remastered, this collection represents a milestone for cartoon fans of all ages. TCM is proud to add these historically important films to TCM Vault Collection series, says Dennis Adamovich, SVP Brand Activation, Turner Entertainment Networks. The UPA cartoon library has not been available in this quality since the cartoons were originally theatrically presented over a half century ago. SPHE has done incredible work in bringing this library back to life. Many of these shorts are modern masterpieces of the animation world and can now be enjoyed again for a new generation.
We are thrilled to once again work with our partners at TURNER to bring these films into the homes of those who have been waiting for their release, says Marc Rashba, Vice President, Marketing for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. We hope the new bonus content, including commentaries by Leonard Maltin, will make an exciting viewing experience for fans.
Among the highlights of UPA: The Jolly Frolics Collection is the 1949 short “The Ragtime Bear,” which introduced the world to that lovably cantankerous, near-sighted millionaire Mr. Magoo, voiced by Jim Backus. The Academy AwardÒ-winning 1950 short “Gerald McBoing Boing,” based on a story by Dr. Seuss, is also featured, along with “Gerald McBoing Boing’s Symphony” (1953) and “Gerald McBoing! Boing! on Planet Moo” (1956).
Other highlights include the studio’s first two shorts for Columbia Pictures, “Robin Hoodlum” (1948) and “The Magic Fluke” (1949); an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart,” narrated by James Mason; and “The Unicorn in the Garden,” which was originally intended to be part of an ambitious feature-length cartoon based on the works of James Thurber.
UPA was formed in 1943 by a group of artists and animators who left Walt Disney during the 1941 animators strike. Hoping to break away from the ultra-realistic animation style Disney had been advocating, the UPA artists sought freedom to experiment with animation techniques, non-realistic colors, contemporary designs and sometimes-provocative storytelling. They began applying their concepts in wartime work for the government, later scoring their first major success with “Hell-Bent for Election,” a Chuck Jones-directed short produced for FDR’s 1944 re-election campaign and sponsored by the United Auto Workers (UAW).
After government contracts dried up in the late ’40s, UPA forged a contract with Columbia Pictures to produce theatrical animated shorts, achieving great success casting Columbia’s Fox and Crow characters in “Robin Hoodlum” and “The Magic Fluke.” When those projects both garnered OscarÒ-nominations, Columbia gave UPA free reign to create its own characters. That led to the emergence of Mr. Magoo and Gerald McBoing Boing, the latter earning the studio’s first Academy AwardÒ for Best Animated Short. The studio went on to win two more Academy AwardsÒ for “When Magoo Flew” (1954) and “Magoo’s Puddle Jumper” (1956). UPA would continue to enjoy unprecedented critical acclaim and awards recognition in the 1950s, including collecting all three of the nominations in 1957, a feat not even achieved by Walt Disney.
Throughout the 1950s, UPA scored several successes, despite losing several of its most talented staff members to the communist purge of the film industry in the 1950s. After earning 15 OscarÒ nominations and three Academy AwardsÒ over 12 years, the studio stopped producing theatrical shorts in 1959. Two theatrical features followed: 1001 Arabian Nights (1959) and Gay Purr-ee (1962).
UPA artists revolutionized animation, not only through their striking design aesthetic but also through the use of limited animation, which incorporated more static backgrounds and less fluid movement. Beginning in the mid-’50s, UPA found great success on television, where lower budgets and tighter deadlines allowed limited animation to thrive. The studio produced such series as The Gerald McBoing-Boing Show, Mister Magoo and The Dick Tracy Show, as well as the enormously popular 1962 holiday special, Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol.
The following is a complete listing of shorts in UPA: The Jolly Frolics Collection:

Kino Lorber Releases The Search for One-Eye Jimmy (1994), finally making its debut on Blu-ray and DVD for the first time ever.
February 28, 2012 by J!-ENT · Leave a Comment

New York, NY – February 27, 2012 – Kino Lorber is proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of The Search for One-Eye Jimmy (1994), a lovably offbeat comedy directed by Sam Henry Kass that features a veritable who’s who of indie acting talents.
The Search for One-Eye Jimmy comes to Blu-ray and DVD with a street date of March 6th. The Blu-ray SRP is $29.95, and the DVD SRP is $24.95.
Boasting an all-star cast headed by Nick Turturro (Takers, “NYPD Blue”), Michael Badalucco (O Brother Where Art Thou, Summer of Sam) and Holt McCallany (Fight Club, “Lights Out”), that also includes Jennifer Beals (Flashdance, The Book of Eli), Steve Buscemi (Reservoir Dogs, “Boardwalk Empire”), Academy Award® Nominee Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Avengers), Sam Rockwell (Moon, Iron Man 2) and John Turturro (Transformers, Do the Right Thing), The Search for One-Eye Jimmy follows a filmmaker, Les (McCallany), trying to track down one of the locals – One-Eye Jimmy (Rockwell) – who has gone missing in South Brooklyn.
The whole neighborhood gets in on the search, leading a disorganized and uproarious searchparty. Les gets tips from some of the colorful locals, like Disco Bean (John Turturro), who apparently never got the memo that his favorite music (and fashion) was dead, and Colonel Ron (Samuel L. Jackson), a crazed Vietnam vet who spends his time fishing for sneakers in the Gowanus Canal. Eventually, the F.B.I., the Catholic Church and even the Mob all join in the search for the elusive “One-Eye” Jimmy.
This hilarious independent comedy, written and directed by Sam Henry Kass (“Seinfeld”), was almost as lost as the film’s title character, having been out of print since the days of VHS and finally making its debut on DVD and Blu-ray in a beautiful new transfer, restored and remastered in high definition.

La haine – Blu-ray Edition
Mathieu Kassovitz (The Crimson Rivers) took the film world by storm with La haine (Hate), a gritty, unsettling, and visually explosive look at racial and cultural volatility in modern-day France, specifically the low-income banlieues on Paris’s outskirts. Aimlessly passing their days in the concrete environs of their dead-end suburbia, Vinz (Irreversible’s Vincent Cassel), Hubert (The Constant Gardener’s Hubert Koundé), and Saïd (Three Kings’ Saïd Taghmaoui)—white, black, and Arab—give human faces to France’s immigrant and otherwise marginalized populations, their resentment at their situation simmering until it reaches a boiling point. A work of tough beauty, La haine is a landmark of contemporary French cinema and a gripping reflection of its country’s ongoing identity crisis.

Certified Copy – Blu-ray & DVD
The great Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami (Close-up) travels to Tuscany for a luminous and provocative romance in which nothing is as it appears. What seems at first to be a straightforward tale of two people—played by Oscar-winning actress Juliette Binoche (Blue) and opera singer William Shimell—getting to know each other over the course of an afternoon gradually reveals itself as something richer, stranger, and trickier: a mind-bending reflection on authenticity, in art as well as in relationships. Both cerebrally and emotionally engaging, Certified Copy (Copie conforme) reminds us that love itself is an enigma.

Summer Interlude – Blu-ray & DVD
Touching on many of the themes that would define the rest of his legendary career—isolation, performance, the inescapability of the past—the tenth film by Ingmar Bergman (The Seventh Seal) was a gentle sway toward true mastery. In one of the director’s great early female roles, Maj-Britt Nilsson (To Joy) beguiles as Marie, an accomplished ballet dancer haunted by her tragic youthful affair with a
shy, handsome student (Thirst’s Birger Malmsten). Her memories of the rocky shores of Stockholm’s outer archipelago mingle with scenes from her gloomy present, most of them set in the dark backstage environs of the theater where she works. A film that the director considered a creative turning point, Summer Interlude is a reverie on life and death that bridges the gap between Bergman’s past and future, theater and cinema.

Summer With Monika – Blu-ray & DVD
Inspired by the earthy eroticism of his muse Harriet Andersson (Through a Glass Darkly), in the first of her many roles for him, Ingmar Bergman (Wild Strawberries) had a major international breakthrough with this ravaging, sensual tale of young love. In Stockholm, a girl (Andersson) and boy (The Magician’s Lars Ekborg) from working-class families run away from home to spend a secluded, romantic summer at the beach, far from parents and responsibilities. Inevitably, it is not long before the pair is forced to return to reality. The version originally released in the U.S. was reedited by its distributor into something more salacious, but the original Summer with Monika, as presented here, is a work of stunning maturity and one of Bergman’s most important films.

Eclipse Series 33: Up All Night with Robert Downey Sr.
Rarely do landmark works of cinema seem so . . . wrong. Robert Downey Sr. emerged as one of the most irreverent filmmakers of the new American underground of the early sixties, taking no prisoners in his rough-and-tumble treatises on politics, race, and consumer culture. In his most famous, the midnight-movie mainstay Putney Swope, an advertising agency is turned on its head when a militant African American man takes charge. Like Swope, Downey held nothing sacred. This selection of five of his most raucous and outlandish films, dating from 1964 to 1975, offers a unique mix of the hilariously abrasive and the intensely experimental.
TWO-DVD BOX SET INCLUDES:
Babo 73
Taylor Mead plays the president of the United Status, who conducts his top-secret international affairs on a deserted beach when he isn’t at the White House (a dilapidated Victorian), in Robert Downey Sr.’s political satire. Downey’s first feature is a rollicking, slapstick, ultra-low-budget 16 mm comedy experiment that introduced a twisted new voice to the American underground scene.

Chafed Elbows
This bad-taste riot was a breakthrough for Robert Downey Sr., thanks to rave notices. Visualized largely in still 35 mm photographs, it follows a shiftless downtown Manhattanite having his “annual November breakdown,” wandering from one odd job to the next, and encountering all sorts of sordid types, from desperate low-budget filmmakers to destitute dirty-sock sniffers. And there are incest, murder, and bad pop songs—something to offend everyone.
1966 • 58 minutes • Black & White/Color • Monaural • 1.33:1 aspect ratio
No More Excuses
Robert Downey Sr. takes his camera and microphone onto the streets (and into some bedrooms) for a close look at Manhattan’s swinging singles scene of the late sixties. Of course, that’s not all: No More Excuses cuts between this footage and the fragmented tale of a time-traveling Civil War soldier, a rant from the director of the fictional Society for Indecency to Naked Animals, and other assorted improprieties.
1968 • 48 minutes • Black & White • Monaural • 1.33:1 aspect ratio
Putney Swope
The most popular film by Robert Downey Sr. is this oddball classic about the antics that ensue after Putney Swope (Arnold Johnson, his voice dubbed by a gravelly Downey), the token black man on the board of a Madison Avenue advertising agency, is inadvertently elected chairman. Putney summarily fires all the whiteys, replaces them with Black Power apostles, renames the company Truth and Soul, Inc., and proceeds to wreak politically incorrect havoc.
1969 • 85 minutes • Black & White/Color • Monaural • 1.77:1 aspect ratio
Two Tons of Turquoise to Taos Tonight
“A film without a beginning or an end,” in Robert Downey Sr.’s words, this Dadaist thingamajig—a never-before-seen, newly reedited version of the director’s 1975 release Moment to Moment (also known as Jive)—is a cascade of curious sketches, scenes, and shots that takes on a rhythmic life. It stars Downey’s wife, Elsie, in an endless succession of off-the-wall roles, from dancer to cocaine fiend.
1975 • 56 minutes • Black & White • Monaural • 1.33:1 aspect ratio
