Film Society | NEW PEOPLE Cinema located in San Francisco’s Japantown. Tickets are $10. Additional ticket and film info is available at: www.newpeopleworld.com/films.

GANTZ II: Perfect Answer (Dubbed) 4:00pm

All those attending the screenings of GANTZ II: Perfect Answer will receive a free full-color GANTZ poster. A special ticket bundle is also available for $25 (DVD) or $30 (Blu-ray) that includes a movie pass, poster, and either the DVD or Blu-ray release.

GANTZ and GANTZ II: Perfect Answer are based on a popular manga series created by Hiroya Oku. The ongoing 31-volume sci-fi action epic is a bestseller in Japan with sales exceeding 16 million copies and is published in North America by Dark Horse Comics. Both films star leading Japanese actors Kazunari Ninomiya (Letters from Iwo Jima) and Kenichi Matsuyama (Death Note, Detroit Metal City).

“GANTZ is one of the most popular live-action film franchises based on a manga series to come from Japan and we are very happy to announce the North American release of the saga’s tense concluding chapter on DVD and Blu-Ray,” says Seiji Horibuchi, President and CEO of NEW PEOPLE, Inc. “GANTZ II: Perfect Answer brings the kinetic action to its riveting climax and fans won’t want to miss this exciting new release!”

In the first GANTZ film (available on Blu-ray/DVD combo-pack from NEW PEOPLE Entertainment), Kei Kurono and his childhood friend, Masaru Kato, attempted to save a man who has fallen onto the train tracks but were run down by an oncoming train. However, rather than finding themselves dead, they were transported to a strange apartment in which they found a mysterious black orb known as ‘GANTZ’. Along with others there, they were given weaponry sent on missions to battle alien beings and gain “points.”

How will we face the end? The GANTZ saga meets its ultimate conclusion in GANTZ II: Perfect Answer, which offers an intensely gripping story-line yet to be known to even readers of the original manga series. Determined to resurrect his friends who have died on previous missions, Kei and other members trapped in the world of GANTZ aim to score the 100 points needed to break through and regain their freedom. But with the emergence of a mysterious man investigating the Gantz members, Gantz begins to act up and the next target shocks the members. Some fight for love, some for justice but what will each member sacrifice?

Kazunari Ninomiya, best known in America for his role in Clint Eastwood’s 2006 blockbuster, Letters from Iwo Jima, is both an actor and a singer. He is also world-renowned as a member of the Japanese boy band “Arashi,” which topped Japan’s music charts in 2009 with the three best-selling singles.

Kenichi Matsuyama is currently one of the most sought-after actors in Japanese film and he has won several awards including Japanese Academy Awards Best New Actor (2007) and Most Popular Actor (2009). Matsuyama is widely recognized for his part as L in Death Note (2006), Death Note II: the Last Name (2006) and Death Note: L, change the WorLd (2008) and also for his portrayal of Johannes Krauser II in the outlandish rock and roll comedy, Detroit Metal City (2009).

Kino Lorber Releases Jean-Luc Godard’s Film Socialisme (2011) on Blu-ray and DVD

December 9, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

New York, NY – December 9, 2011 – Kino Lorber is proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of Film Socialisme, a cinematic essay on Western civilization, politics and history presented through the lens of master filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard.

Film Socialisme comes to Blu-ray and DVD with special features including trailers, a stills gallery, and a special essay about the film by Richard Brody, author of Everything is Cinema: The Working Life of Jean-Luc Godard, which puts the film in the context of Godard’s career. This edition is presented in its original multi-language soundtrack, with two subtitle options including Godard’s “Navajo” English from the theatrical version, and a full English translation of all of the film’s dialog. The prebook date for the Blu-ray and DVD is December 13, 2011, and the street date for each is January 10, 2012. The SRP for the Blu-ray is $34.95, while the SRP for the DVD is $29.95.

This “remarkable and beautiful and challenging” (Glenn Kenny, MSN) essay from filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard explores contemporary European politics and culture in three distinct parts. The first is set on a luxury cruise liner sailing the Mediterranean (with Patti Smith among its passengers), on which Godard examines the garishness of its wealthy passengers with the rich and troubled history of the ship’s ports of call.

The second part depicts the tension between the owners of a rural French rest stop, running for local office, and their children, who have their own ideas about the future. The third part is part-travelogue, part-history lesson, and part-essay, as Godard explores Western history at six different ports of call: Egypt, Hellas, Palestine, Odessa, Naples, and Barcelona, depicting images of art and conflict in order to examine the past and the future of Western civilization.

Shot in HD (Godard’s first film shot entirely in that format), Film Socialisme is a cinematic essay on the socio-political crises of our times.

Kino Lorber Releases Lucas Belvaux’s thriller Rapt (2011), on Blu-ray and DVD

December 5, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

New York, NY – December 5, 2011 – Kino Lorber is proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of Rapt (2011), a suspense drama by Lucas Belvaux that Andrew O’Hehir in Salon.com called a “cool and ingenious thriller”.

The film comes to Blu-ray and DVD with special features including trailers and a stills gallery. The SRP for the Blu-ray is $34.95, and the SRP for the DVD is $29.95. Both are available on December 6, 2011.

Starring Yvan Attal as wealthy industrialist Stanislas Graff, director Lucas Belvaux tells the intense, thrilling story of Graff’s kidnapping in a daring daylight operation. He’s held for 50 million Euros, which his family is desperate to pay, but his multi-national company has their own agenda, concerned more with their own public image and financial interests.

But that’s only the beginning of Graff’s ordeal. In the process of trying to locate the funds to pay his ransom, the unflattering details of Graff’s private life come under public scrutiny, from his gambling, to infidelity, and worse. As his business associates become less and less invested in securing his release, Graff remains in harrowing and excruciating captivity. However, with the details of his private life that have emerged, Graff begins to realize that his eventual release may not mean a return to his old life.

Resonating powerfully with contemporary economic and political realities, Rapt (2011) is both a taut thriller and a character study into a man whose public image belies his unsavory private life.

La Jetée and Sans Soleil – Blu-ray Edition

One of the most influential, radical science-fiction films ever made and a mind-bending free-form travelogue: La Jetée and Sans Soleil couldn’t seem more different—but they’re the twin pillars of an unparalleled and uncompromising career in cinema. A filmmaker, poet, novelist, photographer, editor, and now videographer and digital multimedia artist, Chris Marker (A Grin Without a Cat) has been challenging moviegoers, philosophers, and himself for years with his investigations of time, memory, and the rapid advancement of life on this planet. These two films—a tale of time travel told in still images and a journey to Africa and Japan—remain his best-loved and most widely seen.

Three Outlaw Samurai – Blu-ray & DVD

This first film by the legendary Hideo Gosha (Sword of the Beast) is among the most canonized chambara (sword-fighting) films. An origin-story offshoot of a Japanese television series phenomenon of the same name, Three Outlaw Samurai is a classic in its own right. In it, a wandering, seen-it-all ronin (Tetsuro Tamba) becomes entangled in the dangerous business of two other samurai (Isamu Nagato and Mikijiro Hira), hired to execute a band of peasants who have kidnapped the daughter of a corrupt magistrate. With remarkable storytelling economy and thrilling action scenes, this is an expertly mounted tale of revenge and loyalty.

Tiny Furniture – Blu-ray & DVD

Lena Dunham got her start making YouTube videos, but she emerged as a major talent thanks to the breakthrough success of this exceptionally sharp comedy, which garnered the twenty-four-year-old writer-director-actor comparisons to the likes of Woody Allen. The filmmaker herself plays Aura, a recent college graduate who returns to New York and moves back in with her mother and sister (played by their real-life counterparts). Though Aura is gripped by stasis and confusion about her future, Dunham locates endless sources of refreshing humor in her plight. As painfully confessional as it is endlessly amusing, Tiny Furniture is an authentic, incisive portrait of a young woman at a crossroads.

Anatomy of a Murder – Blu-ray & DVD

A virtuoso James Stewart (Vertigo) plays a small-town Michigan lawyer who takes on a difficult case: that of a young Army lieutenant (The Killing of a Chinese Bookie’s Ben Gazzara) accused of murdering the local tavern owner who he believes raped his wife (Days of Wine and Roses’ Lee Remick). This gripping, envelope-pushing courtroom potboiler, the most popular film from Hollywood provocateur Otto Preminger (Laura), was groundbreaking for the frankness of its discussion of sex—more than anything else, it is a striking depiction of the power of words. With its outstanding supporting cast—including a young George C. Scott (Patton) as a fiery prosecuting attorney and legendary real-life attorney Joseph N. Welch as the judge—and influential jazz score by Duke Ellington, Anatomy of a Murder is a Hollywood landmark; it was nominated for seven Oscars, including best picture.

World on a Wire – Bluray & DVD

World on a Wire is a gloriously paranoid, boundlessly inventive take on the future from German wunderkind Rainer Werner Fassbinder (The Marriage of Maria Braun). With dashes of Stanley Kubrick, Kurt Vonnegut, and Philip K. Dick, as well as a flavor entirely his own, Fassbinder tells the noir-spiked tale of a reluctant action hero, Fred Stiller (The Odessa File’s Klaus Lowitsch), a cybernetics engineer who uncovers a massive corporate conspiracy. At risk? (Virtual) reality as we know it. Originally made for German television, this recently rediscovered, three-and-a-half-hour labyrinth is a satiric and surreal look at the weird world of tomorrow from one of cinema’s kinkiest geniuses.

Vanya on 42nd Street – Blu-ray & DVD

In the nineties, André Gregory mounted a series of spare, private performances of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya in a crumbling Manhattan playhouse. These treasures of pure theater would have been lost to time had they not been captured on film, with subtle cinematic brilliance, by Louis Malle (My Dinner with André). In Vanya on 42nd Street, a stellar cast of actors—including Wallace Shawn, Julianne Moore, Brooke Smith, and George Gaynes—embark on a full read-through of Uncle Vanya (adapted into English by David Mamet); the result is as memorable and emotional a screen version of Chekhov’s masterpiece as one could ever hope to see. This film, which turned out to be Malle’s last, is a tribute to the playwright’s devastating work as well as to the creative process itself.

Upon learning of Annabel’s imminent early passing, Enoch offers to help her face her last days with an irreverent abandon, tempting fate, tradition and even death itself.

As their unique love for each other grows, so do the realities of the world that they have felt closing in on them. Daring, childlike, and distinctly rare – these two bravely face what life has in store for them. Fighting pain, anger and loss with youth, playfulness and originality, these two misfits turn the tables on life and play by their own rules. Their journey begins to collide with the unstoppable march of time, as the natural cycle of life comes to claim Annabel.

RESTLESS marks the screenwriting debut of Jason Lew. It was co-produced by Brett Cranford (Manson Girls, Nightscape). Executive producers are David Allen Cress (Paranoid Park), Eric Black, Michael Sugar (Rendition), Sarah Bowen (Take Me Home Tonight) and Erica Huggins (Flightplan).

RESTLESS was released theatrically by Sony Pictures Classics. It has a run time of approximately 92 minutes and has been rated PG-13 for thematic elements and brief sensuality.

Kino Classics Releases Two D.W. Griffith Masterpieces on Blu-ray and DVD (November 22, 2011)

November 8, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

New York, NY – November 8, 2011 – Kino Classics is proud to release two landmark American films from master filmmaker D.W. Griffith, now presented in brand-new HD transfers: The Birth of a Nation (1915), frequently cited among the most important (and controversial) films of all time, and Way Down East (1920), a pastoral classic of Americana that fuses Griffith’s affinity for Victorian melodrama with masterful cinematic technique.

Set to become available on Blu-ray and DVD on November 22nd, both of these newly transferred releases represent some of the most significant achievements in the career of D. W. Grffith, a man who almost single-handedly created today’s cinematic conventions and helped transform a five-cent attraction into an exciting new art form.

The Birth of a Nation comes to Blu-ray and DVD in a deluxe three-disc edition, with the Blu-ray priced at $39.95, and the DVD at $29.95. Way Down East is available only on Blu-ray, with a SRP of $34.95. Both films have been newly remastered in HD from 35mm archival prints.

On disc one, Kino’s new The Birth of a Nation features the film with a score by the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra; the new score was recorded in 2011 and is here presented in both Dolby 2.0 stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.

Disc one also includes an introduction to the film, featuring actor Walter Huston and D.W. Griffith discussing the depiction of historical events in the film. This spoken introduction (which was filmed for the 1930 re-issue of the film) also includes the newly-rediscovered intermission sequence from the 1930 re-issue.

Disc two (on standard DVD, both in the Blu-ray and DVD packages) features the 1993 restoration of The Birth of a Nation, restored by David Shepard of Film Preservation Associates. This edition features an orchestral score adapted in 1993 from the original score by Joseph Carl Breil, presented here in 2.0 stereo. Also included is The Making of The Birth of a Nation, a 24-minute documentary produced by David Shepard, featuring screen tests from the film.

Disc three (also only on standard DVD, both in the Blu-ray and DVD sets) contains seven Civil War-themed short films directed by D.W. Griffith from his time at the Biograph Studio. These films show Griffith working with similar historical subject matter, and demonstrate his masterful handling of the subject of war.

Also included is New York vs. The Birth of a Nation, a collection of archival documents pertaining to the censorship battles over the film’s 1922 re-release. Disc three is topped off with an excerpt from the film’s original souvenir program books, distributed at the premiere of the film in 1915.

The original release of The Birth of a Nation energized the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which tried to have the film banned, or at least its most gruesome scenes cut from the film. The film’s vicious and highly problematic portrayal of African Americans has caused great controversy, while also inspiring African Americans to move into filmmaking as a way to offer a more just and historically accurate portrayal of their experiences. But even to this day, to look at The Birth of Nation is to see a moment in American history where racial equality and justice were still a far-away dream.

Way Down East arrives on Blu-ray mastered in HD from the Museum of Modern Art’s 35mm restoration, which restores the original color tints. This presentation features a score by the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, presented here in 2.0 stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound.

Bonus features include a gallery of images from the original souvenir program book; notes and excerpts from the original stage play, written by Lottie Blair Parker in 1898; photos of William Brady’s 1903 stage production of Way Down East; and a film clip of the “ice floe” sequence from the Edison Company’s 1903 production of Uncle Tom’s Cabin , which served as an inspiration for Griffith’s handling of the famous chase across the ice floes in Way Down East.
