Funny, perverse and just all out crazy! “Sora no Otoshimono: Heaven’s Lost Property – Season 1″ is an anime series for fans who love harem anime with a sci-fi element and a dose of raunchiness. If you want to spice up your anime Blu-ray collection, this anime series is for you!

Tomoki’s life was normal until a wish-granting angelic android named Ikaros fell from the sky and started calling him master! Of course, thanks to his raging teenage hormones, most of Tomoki’s wishes have something to do with panties. And that makes things pretty complicated, because one simple wish can lead to a rampaging robot made out of frilly undergarments or turn bloomers into bombs capable of blowing up entire neighborhoods!

If Tomoki doesn’t learn to control his impulses around Ikaros and be more careful with his wishes, the chaos will only get crazier. Luckily, even with such a dirty mind, Tomoki’s heart is in the right place. His hands, however, are a completely different story.

In 2007, mangaka Suu Minazuki created teh manga series “Sora no Otoshimono” (Heaven’s Lost Property) which was published in the manga magazine “Shonen Ace” and is still ongoing in Japan.

With the popularity of the manga series, an anime adaptation by AIC was produced and aired on television on Oct. through Dec. 2009, with a second season that continued in Winter 2010 and a film that was released in June 2011.

Now, “Sora no Otoshimono” has received its anime debut in the U.S. courtesy of FUNimation Entertainment with a hybrid Blu-ray/DVD release in Dec. 2011.

Directing the anime series is Hisashi Saito (“Bamboo Blade”, “Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai”), screenplay by Yuuko Kakihara (“Fairy Musketeers”, “Kage Kara Mamoru!, “Persona 4: The Animation”), music by Motoyoshi Iwasaki (“Hamtaro”, “Geobreeders 2″, “Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat”), character design by Yoshiro Watanabe (“Bamboo Blade”, “Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai”, “Onegai Teacher!”) and art direction by Hiromasa Ogura (“Jin-Roh – The Wolf Brigade”, “Ashita no Joe 2″, “Spirited Away”).

The series continues with FUNimation’s more mature-themed anime series along with “Sekirei: Pure Engagement”, “Rosario+Vampire”, “B Gata H Kei: Yamada’s First Time” featuring perverse humor, fan service and sexual themes.

“Sora no Otoshimono: Heaven’s Lost Property” focuses on a young high school teenager named Tomoki Sakurai, a perverted young man (who was influenced by his equally perverted grandfather) who has panties and sexual things that are constantly on his mind. And if there is one girl he occasionally likes to check out, it’s his neighbor and childhood friend Sohara Mitsuki. Who is aware of Tomoki’s perverseness and is unafraid to give him her special karate shop and knock some sense into him.

Despite how she tends to dislike his perverseness and constantly beats him up, she knows deep inside that she is in love with him. Sohara is also aware that for some reason, Tomoki has had some unusual dreams involving an angel which tends to awaken him like a nightmare since he was young.

Meanwhile, with the start of a new school year… Tomoki meets Eishiro Sugata, a scientist who is trying to discover a “New World” and his friend Mikako Satsukitane, a buxom sadist who has a mafia background and is also the Student Body President.

One day, while Tomoki was outside, he sees something in the sky, a UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animal) and she happens to crash land on Earth. The UMA reveals herself as Ikaros, a “Pet-Class Angeloid, Type Alpha” and together, the two are bonded by an invisible chain and Tomoki becomes her master.

In the beginning, Ikaros is an emotionless individual and because she is bonded to him and goes wherever he goes, it becomes somewhat of an annoyance for Tomoki, but at the same time, he realizes that with her abilities, it can help him make his perverted dreams come true.

Eventually, Sohara, Eishiro and Mikako learn about Ikaros and the two young women try to help Ikaros learn about how humans behave, while Eishiro tries to learn more about her programming and why she was sent to Earth, especially why she chose Tomoki. And in order to keep the activities of Ikaros private, they join Eishiro’s “New World Discovery Club” to see if Ikaros may have some tie to this new world of Angeloids and Synapse that Eishiro is currently researching.

Meanwhile, another Angeloid has appeared on Earth, and her name is Nymph, an “Electronic Warfare Angeloid, Type Beta” who can’t stand humans and is sent to Earth to confront Ikaros. But similar to Ikaros, the more time she spends with Tomoki and friends, she gets to learn about human-kindness and what a nice master that Ikaros has. Unlike Nymph, her master (Master of Synapse) is abusive, maniacal and evil…but because she is tied to him, she will do as he wishes.

It is then revealed after a confrontation between Ikaros and Nymph that she was sent by the sadistic leader “Master of Synapse” to possibly destroy human-kind, something Ikaros does not want to do…especially now that she has started to discover newfound emotions…love for Tomoki. But not just Ikaros, but also Nymph as she wishes more and more each day that she had someone like Tomoki as her master.

As the Master of Synapse plans his scheme against humanity, will Ikaros and Nymph follow his evil orders? Or will they follow their heart and emotions which they have become aware of because of Tomoki?

“Sora no Otoshimono: Heaven’s Lost Property – Season 1″ is presented in 1:78:1 and one has to remember that this is a TV series not an OVA or film, so production is standard for what you would expected for a television anime series. But I have to admit that this series does offer a bit more when it comes to detail and shading. The fact that there are so many locations featured, the characters are featured in various outfits, hanging out all over town and the artistic backgrounds are well-painted. For the most part, this anime series is well-animated.

Also, there is a good amount of lighting effects, especially when featuring the Angeloid’s in battle or Ikaros wings come out. If anything, I found “Sora no Otoshimono: Heaven’s Lost Property – Season 1″ to be a series that looks better than most anime TV series and AIC A.S.T.A. did a pretty good job with it!

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

“Sora no Otoshimono: Heaven’s Lost Property – Season 1″ is presented in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and Japanese DolbyTrue HD 2.0. It’s important to note that despite me typically watching anime series in Japanese, I chose to watch this series with an English dub, primarily for the dynamic range of the lossless 5.1 soundtrack but mostly because FUNimation Entertainment really enhanced the perverseness of the series through its dialogue. From Tomoki’s lyrics for his hard nips song to Nohara joking around with Tomoki of sniffing her underwear, there is this boldness when it comes to perverse dialogue than the Japanese version. It’s much calmer than extreme and because of that, it worked for the English dub.

Dialogue for the most part was crystal clear as was special effects, but I didn’t notice too many use of the surround channels until you reach the confrontation between Ikaros and Nymph and what takes place at the end of the first season.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

It’s important to note that while “Sora no Otoshimono: Heaven’s Lost Property – Season 1″ does not sport the FUNimation Entertainment dub voice actors audio commentary (which I was hoping to hear), we do get many of the textless ending theme songs. But this is probably what I enjoyed with every episode, the voice talent singing songs via anime theme songs from the ’70s, ’80′s and modern-style themes. For anyone who has watched classic anime, will definitely enjoy the different ending themes featured in this series.

Intriguingly perverse, reminiscent of “Urusei Yatsura” and “Chobits”, “Sora no Otoshimono: Heaven’s Lost Property” is an anime series that will appeal to harem anime series fans, especially those who love fan service.

It’s actually an interesting month for FUNimation Entertainment as there have been quite a few of these mature anime series with sexual themes, but with series such as “Sekirei: Pure Engagement” and even “Rosario + Vampire”, the male protagonist is typically reserved and not much of a pervert. But with “Sora no Otoshimono: Heaven’s Lost Property”, the character of Tomoki is a total pervert constantly thinking about panties and what FUNimation Entertainment has done, especially with the English dub is further enhance the perversion.

While the series tends to focus on Ikaros trying to become more human and obviously developing feelings towards her master, part of the absurdity and perverted comedy is Tomoki’s way of using both Ikaros and Nymph to make his perverted dreams come true.

For example, when Tomoki wishes that Nohara would stop wearing her teddy bear panties, Ikaros uses her magic to make Nohara wear no panties at all (when panties are rejected, they fly out the window like a bird) because she wants to make her master’s dreams come true. So, one episode focuses on the group trying to find panties that Tomoki can wear, while Nohara tries her best not to let Tomoki see her naked.

Another episode features Tomoki using the angeloid’s magical cards by changing his physical form to a woman, so he can enter the public baths and give Sohara and Mikako a scrub while they are naked.

And of course, being the perverted guy he is, when Ikaros and Nymph discover his stash of naughty videos, they start wondering if that is how women should be acting towards men.

So, make no doubt about it, this sci-fi harem anime series is perverted and full of sexual themes but its important to note that there is no full frontal nudity or intercourse or anything like that. Private parts are covered by hair (or some cloud) and if anything, the series is more comedy-driven through Tomoki’s behavior and of course, the harem element as we know that Nohara, Ikaros and Nymph are falling for Tomoki.

As mentioned, the series does have some of that “Urusei Yatsura” craziness but also the “Chobits” style of an angeloid who acts almost like an emotionless android but overtime, her emotions start to come into play through more exposure to Tomoki and friends.

So, while the majority of the series does feature more lighthearted to crazy, wacky plots…it does get a bit serious and emotional towards the end.

As for the Blu-ray release, picture quality is good but it’s a TV Series and one should not expect anything near OVA or film quality. The lossless audio is good but it’s the English dub that actually makes this series even more perverse and for special features, while no audio commentary, you do get plenty of ending themes.

Overall, “Sora no Otoshimono: Heaven’s Lost Property – Season 1″ was a fun, perverse anime series. There is no doubt that this will surely entertain anime fans who enjoy harem anime series especially with that sci-fi element with a bit of raunchiness as well.

Bamboo Blade: Part 2 (a J!-ENT Anime DVD Review)

What a fantastic conclusion to the series! “Bamboo Blade” is an anime series that is just all-out fun, hilarious and addictive! The second part of “Bamboo Blade” just gets better and better and when it’s all done, you wish there was more! A DVD series that is highly recommended!

Having a fierce swordswoman like Tamaki at practice every day gives the girls of the Kendo club reason for hope, but this team still has a long way to go. Their sensei is one false move away from losing his job, the team’s facing a suspension, and even Tamaki is about to experience the bitter taste of defeat. So will the girls pick each other up and stick together as a team – or will they crumble under the pressure and go their separate ways?

During his team’s darkest hour, it will be up to Toraji to inspire his warriors and teach Tamaki that sometimes, only a crushing loss can stoke the flames of competition.

In 2004, the manga series “Bamboo Blade” by Masahiro Totsuka and Aguri Igarashi (illustrator) was released and featured in the Japanese seinen manga magazine Young Gangan. An anime adaptation was produced by AIC A.S.T.A. (“Tokimeki Memorial ~Only Love~”, “Tentai Senshi Sunred”, “Godannar”) and was shown on TV Tokyo from October 2007 through April 2008.

The anime series is directed by Hisashi Saito (who worked on series such as “Fullmetal Alchemist”, “Eureka Seven”, “Bleach”) and features a screenplay by Hideyuki Kurata (who created “Read or Die” and “Kamichu!”). Character designs are by Naoto Hosoda (“Jinki: Extend”, “Nagasarete Airantou”, “Shuffle! Memories”) and 3D by Tatsuya Watanabe (“Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie – Conqueror of Shamballa”).

In November, the first half of the 26-episode anime series made its US debut with part 1 featuring the first 13-episodes in a 2-DVD collection courtesy of FUNimation Entertainment.

“Bamboo Blade” is about an economics teacher named Toraji Ishida who is also the coach of the Muroe high school Kendo team. Ishida is a low-paid teacher barely surviving from paycheck to paycheck and literally has to go through days without eating. It’s so bad that the students end up sharing their food with him because they could tell that he’s out of it because of the lack of food.

In the beginning, Sensei Ishida’s intention was to bring in four more girls into the club and train them for competition in order to win a bet against his good friend, Sensei Ishibashi (who teaches and coaches two female high school kendo teams). Whoever wins the competition would ensure him a year’s free sushi, all you can eat from his Ishibashi’s fathers restaurant or if he loses, give up a trophy he won against him when they were younger.

For the most part, the first half of the series shows the team dynamics and the training his kendo students have put in. With long time member Kirino being the heart and soul of the team (and also the team captain), Ishida has the kendo prodigy named Tamaki Kawazoe on his team. The main concern that Ishida has for Tamaki is that she has never lost and has never been in that position before. To make things more interesting, as focused she is in every match, for some reason when the opponent does a high stance (holding the sword above the head), she freezes up for some reason.

Also, to make things worse for Sensei Ishida, his job is on the line after he was involved in a disturbance with a board member’s next door neighbor. Now he has no choice but to make sure the team is prepared to win regionals and the only way he can do that is train them harder than ever before in a short amount of time. Will Sensei Ishida managed to train his team? Will they be ready for these upcoming major competitions?

The second half of “Bamboo Blade” continues to focus on team dynamics but also individual stories that continues the hilarious and fun storyline of the series but also becomes much more serious towards the latter end of the series.

The main characters of “Bamboo Blade” are:

Toraji Ishida – The economics teacher at Muroe High School who is the sensei of the Kendo team. Sensei Ishida hardly makes any money and lives paycheck to paycheck which leaves him without food for days at a time. His love is kendo but has a lax style of teaching. His job is on the line due to an argument with a woman who turned out to be a neighbor of a school board member.

Kirino Chiba - A second year student at Muroe High School who loves kendo and wants to compete. The captain of the team who is full of energy, enthusiastic and her parents own a deli. She is also the heart and soul of the team, putting them first before herself.

Tamaki Kawazoe - A hardcore anime and tokusatsu fan, she’s also the daughter of a father who owns a kendo dojo and has learned since she was a little girl and somewhat of a prodigy of the sport. She joins the kendo club after she sees freshman students being bullied by the male seniors and because she is seen like a hero (like her tokusatsu shows), she joins the team to fight against any evil and for justice. Despite her talent in kendo, Tama-chan is very shy and soft-spoken.

Miyako “Miya-Miya” Miyazaki – The beautiful girlfriend of Danjuro Eiga (aka Dan-kun). Cute and perky on the outside but she also has a dark and evil side to her in which a black aura comes out of her (which other people except her boyfriend can see). Joins the Kendo team so she can utilize her aggressive nature and beat on someone. Her weakness appears to be a female stalker who follows her around and takes away her focus.

Sayako Kuwahara – A second year student and happens to be like a drama queen and has a very low self-confidence. Always changing her goals and up to something new, she has high expectations for herself and when she fails, she quits but with the new team, she has started to find herself and also becoming best friends with Kirino.

Satori Azuma - Very talented in kendo but because of her bad grades, she was forced to quit and to focus on her studies. But now with her return to kendo and also regaining her enthusiasm and becoming much happier, will she be able to succeed in school and kendo?

Yuji Nakata- One of the few male students in the kendo club who is passionate about kendo. Yuji trained at Tama’s fathers kendo dojo. Very smart and the only person on the team who knows his sensei’s true intention of bringing female members to the kendo team. His fellow kendo members think he has a thing for Tamaki.

Danjuro “Dan-kun” Eiga - The short odd looking member of the club who joins because he wants to wield a sword like a ninja. Although he appears to be kind of dumb, he is actually quite smart and even dates the beautiful Miya-Miya. Slowly progressing in his kendo abilities and becoming a formidable kendo opponent.

“Bamboo Blade: Part 2″ comes with episodes 14-26 on two DVD discs. Here are the spoiler-less summaries of each episode:

DISC 3:

EPISODE 14 – Satrin’s Resolve and Nomming – Continued from the last episode, Azuma decides that she needs to focus on her grades and not kendo. Miya-Miya decides to take care of the situation her way.
EPISODE 15 – First Training Camp and First Public Bath – Sensei Ishida holds his first training camp for his kendo students and also Sensei Ishibashi’s Machido five female kendo students and the two groups train hard and bond with each other.
EPISODE 16 – Kirino’s Absence and the Preliminary Tournament – Something happens to Kirino’s mother that prevents her from attending kendo classes right before the major tournament, meanwhile rumors swirl about another high school group and kendo team about their poor sportsmanship. Meanwhile, the Muroe High kendo team competes in a major competition.
EPISODE 17 – Light and Shadow – With the events that happened in the last episode, Tamaki is put into a situation that she has never been in before. With a bad ankle and a vicious opponent, will she be able to compete?
EPISODE 18 – The Tournament and Muroe High After That – Continuing with the tournament and Sensei Ishida having to make a major coaching decision after seeing how bad Tamaki’s ankle is.
EPISODE 19 – The Armadillo and the Pangolin – Miya-Miya wants to train harder in kendo after doing badly in the tournament. As she goes to buy a new shinai, she runs into an American kendo student who starts hugging her boyfriend Dan-kun. Jealous with rage, the American named Carrie challenges Miya-Miya in a kendo battle for Dan-kun!
EPISODE 20 – Braver and Shinaider - Yuuji has tickets for a Braver event (Tama’s favorite show) and she ends up in a competition with another die hard fan named Rin.

DISC 4:

EPISODE 21 – Tamaki Kawazoe and Rin Suzuki – With the Braver film to begin shooting, the film crew stays at Tamaki’s home and Tamaki realizes that the girl Rin from the amusement park quiz competition is there as well.
EPISODE 22 – Winners and Losers – Sensei Ishida has the team prepare for the Kanto High School Kendo tournament and Tamaki will be squaring off with her new friend/rival Rin Suzuki while Miya-Miya will be going against her American nemesis Carrie. Meanwhile, two of the former Muroe High School kendo students Toyama and Iwasa (the bad kids from the first episode) cause trouble and destroy an arcade after a fight.
EPISODE 23 – Lies and Silence – Trouble comes to Muroe High School as the principal informs Sensei Ishida that two of the students has destroyed property and have gotten worst with their aggression. A resolution must come which can lead the team to a one year suspension. Meanwhile, after the competition and the loss, two members decide to quite the kendo club.
EPISODE 24 – The Sword and the Way – With the troubles at Muroe High School, current members of the team try their best to bring their former members back. Meanwhile, Kirino must make the biggest decision as a team captain.
EPISODE 25 – Kendo and What It Brings About – It’s time for the Kendo National competition and with hard training, it all comes down to this moment. Also, Miya-Miya and Tamaki go against their rivals once again!
EPISODE 26 -”Sine Then” and “From Here and Out” – It’s a new school year and two new students come to watch the kendo team. Meanwhile, we see how things have changed with the team especially with a new adviser. What has happened to Sensei Ishida? And who will be the new captain of the Muroe High School kendo team?

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“Bamboo Blade” is presented in 16:9 and for the most part the animation is pretty cool as it integrates CG to the animation. Because of the fast pacing of the kendo, there is quite a bit of action in the series. Character designs are quite interesting as we see cool character designs and sometimes hilarious facial expressions. With the second half of the series, the series takes place in different settings. So, there is more scenery outside of the kendo dojo and the high school this time around. Also, with the series getting a bit more serious towards the latter end, I definitely enjoyed how the animation fit the mood of the series.

Audio is presented in English 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound and Japanese Stereo. For the English dubbed track, the anime is front and center channel driven with certain sounds of the shinai (the wooden bamboo sticks) hitting each other and crowd ambiance to footsteps can be heard through the surround channels. English voice acting is actually very well-done! Japanese dialogue is front channel driven and is Dolby Digital stereo only but for those who have a modern home theater receiver can select stereo on all channels for a more immersive soundtrack.

When it comes to sports related anime, I’m actually a big fan of it. May it be “Slam Dunk”, “Big Windup”, “Yawara”, “Eyeshield 21″, “Prince of Tennis”, “Captain Tsubasa” to name a few… I’ve been a big fan of anime sports series especially if the anime focuses on characters that are underdogs and become high achievers.

So, I was wondering how an anime series based on kendo would be. I’ve learned and even practiced kendo (for a very short time) and mainly because it is a very discipline-based sport (and for some friends its part of their lifestyle), for those on the outside, an anime based on kendo can be seen as boring or quite technical. But “Bamboo Blade” is nowhere near boring, in fact…once you start watching it…you’ll find the series to be quite fun and quite addicting!

For the most part, the series is definitely created to be anime friendly for those not familiar with the sport (or for those who despise sports anime) by including pretty girls who have their own interesting personal character traits, add in a lot of humor, girls (and a few guys) training in kendo and what you get it is a fun anime series known as”Bamboo Blade”. And I think it’s quite appropriate since there are many anime fans who are so against sports-related anime series, “Bamboo Blade” is one of those few anime series that won’t bore them.

Sure the anime series has its share of cute girls, hijinks and craziness but what about those who are fans of kendo, what can they get from “Bamboo Blade”? Well, the series does feature the training of kendo, the action scenes of kendo and also the spirit of kendo. The anime features some of the technical aspects of the sport but for the most part, the for the anime series to be quite fun and enjoyable for non-kendo/non-sports fans, the series is not dominated by it. It’s a character-driven anime series and for the most part, its made to be entertaining.

Overall, every episode of “Bamboo Blade” has been quite entertaining and fun. I found myself laughing and just really enjoying this anime series a lot. So, don’t let the kendo theme scare you, “Bamboo Blade” is not your typical sports anime series. It’s about friendship, teamwork and also adversity. In fact, after watching the complete series, I have to say that “Bamboo Blade” has made it into my top 10 favorite anime series of 2009. The series just gets better and better and definitely enjoyed the series and how they ended it. I just hope that there are plans to continue the series!

“Bamboo Blade” is definitely a series worth checking out! I highly recommend picking up both parts of the series and trust me, you’ll be hooked!

A very fun, hilarious and addictive anime series! Although a sports-related anime series, anime fans not familiar with kendo can easily watch and enjoy this series and become captivated with its fun and wacky characters plus its hilarious, lighthearted, underdog turned winning attitude storyline. Definitely recommended!

It didn’t take long for pint-sized Tamaki’s lightning reflexes to catch the eye of starving Kendo instructor Toraji.

This second-rate sensei is an embarrassment to the sport, and his Kendo club is running out of members. His only hope for redemption – and a full belly – is to get Tamaki to sign-on as his star pupil. Unfortunately, this sword-wielding prodigy is a serious anime addict, so it’ll be a challenge to get her to step away from the television and into the dojo.

But once she feels like a part of the team, Tamaki has the skills to turn any bunch of misfits into a fearsome sisterhood of the bamboo blade!

Now the 26-episode anime series makes it to US with part 1 featuring the first 13-episodes in a 2-DVD collection courtesy of FUNimation Entertainment.

“Bamboo Blade” is about a teacher named Toraji Ishida who is also the coach of the high school Kendo team. Unfortunately or Ishida, a teacher who hasn’t been in the profession all that long is having a hard time keeping afloat with his paycheck. Most of his money goes to bills and food and he tries to live within means but sometimes he’s left starving for a days time and its starting to affect him. But his passion is with the kendo team and when his friend Ishibashi (a teacher who also teaches a high school kendo team) challenges him to a kendo contest among their female members of their kendo club. Ishida immediately takes it because if he wins, he gets free sushi at Ishibashi’s father’s sushi restaurant.

How can the always hungry kendo instructor resist? The problem is that he has only one female member in the team and now he and his only female kendo member Kirino Chiba go on a mission to recruit people to the kendo team and prepare for the competition.

The main characters of “Bamboo Blade” are:

Toraji Ishida – The economics teacher at Muroe High School who is the sensei of the Kendo team. Hardly makes any money and lives paycheck to paycheck which leaves him without food for days at a time. His love is kendo but has a lax style of teaching.

Kirino Chiba - A second year student at Muroe High School who loves kendo and wants to compete. The captain of the team who is full of energy, enthusiastic and her parents own a deli.

Tamaki Kawazoe - A hardcore anime and tokusatsu (which is the name for series such as “Kamen Rider”) fan, she’s also the daughter of a father who owns a kendo dojo and has learned since she was a little girl and somewhat of a prodigy of the sport. She joins the kendo club after she sees freshman students being bullied by the male seniors and because she is seen like a hero (like her tokusatsu shows), she joins the team to fight against any evil and for justice. Despite her talent in kendo, Tama-chan is very shy and soft-spoken.

Sayako Kuwahara - A second year student and happens to be like a drama queen and has a very low self-confidence. Always changing her goals and up to something new, she has high expectations for herself and when she fails, she quits and she has quit the kendo team many times just to come back later on to prove herself that she can beat Kirino.

Satori Azuma - Very talented in kendo but because of her bad grades, she was forced to quit and to focus on her studies.

“Bamboo Blade: Part 1″ comes with episodes 1-13 on two DVD discs. Here are the spoiler-less summaries of each episode:

DISC 1:

EPISODE 1 – A Bamboo Broom and a Champion of Justice – Sensei Ishida and Kirino try to recruit Tamaki Kawazoe to the kendo team. Also, Yuji, Dan-kun and Miya-Miya join the team.
EPISODE 2 – The Blade Bravers and Boxed Lunch – The new members of the Kendo team get to know each other through lunch at school.
EPISODE 3 – Black and Blue – Miya-Miya wants revenge against the boys that have tried to hurt her Dan-kun, meanwhile we learn about the other female member Sayako and Sensei wonders if she will come back to the kendo club.
EPISODE 4 – Pink and Blue – Sayako returns to join the kendo club and realizes that the person she had a bad encounter with is Miya-Miya and that she is part of the kendo team.
EPISODE 5 – Muroe High and Machido High – It’s the day of the competition as sensei Ishida’s Muroe High female kendo team take on Machido High’s five female members of their team.
EPISODE 6 – Tamaki Kawazoe and the Tardy Bureiba – With Muroe High School only having four members, Sensei Ishida tries to have Tama pretend to become a fifth member named Bureiba.
EPISODE 7 – Sushi and Mince Meat Cutlets - Sensei Kenzaburo of Machido High is shocked about Tama’s performance in Kendo and issues her a challenge to fight him.

DISC 2:

EPISODE 8 – Tama and Part-time Work – Tama really wants a DVD box set but she is short of the money. With Miya-Miya injured from competition, she allows Tama to make some money by filling in for her at her part-time job.
EPISODE 9 – Kojiro and the Crossroads of Fate – Kojiro gets into a heated argument at the grocery store with a woman and now his job at the high school is in jeopardy.
EPISODE 10 – Miyako Miyazaki’s Melancholy and the First Tournament – Muroe high school may have a chance of getting a fifth member, meanwhile Miya-Miya is worried that her stalker is back.
EPISODE 11 – Animation and Dreams – Miya-Miya explains to her kendo teammates about her stalker Otajima Reimi. Meanwhile Sensei Ishida and Kirino try to recruit Azuma.
EPISODE 12 – Azuma’s Circumstances and Mei’s Circumstance – We learn why Azuma had to quit kendo and why sensei is forbidden in trying to recruit her. Meanwhile, the girls prepare for their training against Seimei High’s kendo team.
EPISODE 13 – Teachers and Students – Azuma becomes inspired by Tama and wants to go against her in a competition to decide whether or not she will join the team. Meanwhile Muroe High’s female kendo team takes on Seimei High’s female kendo team.

But what about those who are fans of kendo, what can they get from “Bamboo Blade”? Well, the series does feature the training of kendo, the action scenes of kendo and also the spirit of kendo. The anime features some of the technical aspects of the sport but for the most part, the for the anime series to be quite fun and enjoyable for non-kendo/non-sports fans, the series is not dominated by it. It’s a character-driven anime series and for the most part, its made to be entertaining. From Tama being a kendo prodigy, it’s interesting to see her go out and fight the best at various high schools, the cute and perk student Miya-Miya who sometimes unleashes her evil dark side and freaks people out when they can see that aura around her. To the sensei who is trying to survive and teach kendo but at the same time, is looked at quite pitifully because he lives his life poor and without eating while trying to keep this facade that things are going well in his life.

The facial expressions and animation is pretty cool. Animators definitely capture the action of kendo from the shinai hitting the other shinai, the various hits allowed in the sport to the footwork. Everything comes together quite nicely and there are many non-kendo episodes featured as well.

“Bamboo Blade” is definitely a series worth checking out!
