Special Olympics Founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver to Be Posthumously Honored With the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at ‘The 25th ESPYS’ on ABC

June 6, 2017 by · Leave a Comment

Eunice Kennedy Shriver dedicated her life to championing the rights and acceptance of people with intellectual disabilities. Her legacy lives on through Special Olympics, the global movement she founded in 1968 that harnesses the transformative power of sports to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities to become accepted and celebrated members of society. To honor her work and her creation of Special Olympics, Eunice Kennedy Shriver will be posthumously honored with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at “The 25th ESPYS Presented by Capital One” on Wednesday, July 12. Timothy Shriver, one of Shriver’s five children and chairman of Special Olympics, will accept the award on her behalf. The award is sponsored by Cadillac.

“My mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, was a visionary, but, more importantly, a revolutionary,” said Timothy Shriver on behalf of the Shriver family and Special Olympics. “Fueled by love and anger, she used sport to break down the barriers, she used fields of play to bring people together, and she opened the doors of inclusion and equality to the most marginalized on Earth. It is now up to all of us to follow the athletes of Special Olympics who can teach us all to accept and include each other.”

Shriver grew up as a member of the Kennedy Family alongside her sister, Rosemary, who had intellectual disabilities. Rosemary’s talents and gifts made Shriver acutely aware of all that people with intellectual disabilities have to offer, but she recognized early on that there were limited programs and options for people like her sister. The pair bonded through sports like football, skiing and sailing, and Shriver appreciated the role sports play in unifying people from all walks of life.

The idea started in 1962 as Camp Shriver, as a summer day camp in the backyard of her Maryland farm. Camp Shriver grew and eventually evolved into Special Olympics, with the first International Special Olympics Games taking place in 1968 at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois, welcoming 1,000 athletes from 26 states and Canada to compete. Today, Special Olympics is year-round, includes 5.3 million athletes in more than 170 countries, and over 1 million coaches and volunteers, delivering 32 Olympic-type sports and more than 108,000 competitions throughout the year.

Throughout her life, Shriver was a tireless advocate for children’s health and disability issues. In 1984, she was honored for her work with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Ronald Reagan. Shriver passed away on August 11, 2009, but her legacy lives on through Special Olympics, which will mark its 50th anniversary next year.

“The effort that Eunice Kennedy Shriver and her family have been displaying for these past five decades is truly remarkable,” said “ESPYS” executive producer Maura Mandt. “We are honored to celebrate Eunice’s work and the bravery of the athletes of Special Olympics, whose efforts and performances are as inspiring as any of those we celebrate on this show. It’s stories like this one that show what the ‘ESPYS’ are really about.”

Added Connor Schell, ESPN senior vice president and executive producer, original content, who oversees “The ESPYS”:  “Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s legacy is remarkable, far-reaching and still growing. As a proud global supporter of Special Olympics for over 35 years, ESPN has had the privilege of showcasing a small slice of her work to fans and families around the world, allowing many of us to witness first-hand the incredible impact she has had on millions of people.”

Presented annually to individuals whose contributions transcend sports, the award recognizes those individuals who embody the spirit of the trophy’s namesake, tennis legend Arthur Ashe, who dedicated his life to human rights advocacy. “The 25th ESPYS,” hosted by five-time NFL MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion Peyton Manning, will air live on Wednesday, July 12, at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Tickets are available for public purchase at AXS.com. For additional ESPYS news and information, please follow the official Twitter handle: @ESPYS.

The Arthur Ashe Courage Award
The Arthur Ashe Courage Award is presented each year to individuals whose contributions transcend sports. Past honorees include: Jim Valvano (1993); Steve Palermo (1994); Howard Cosell (1995); Loretta Claiborne (1996); Muhammad Ali (1997); Dean Smith (1998); Billie Jean King (1999); Dave Sanders (2000); Olympian Cathy Freeman (2001); Todd Beamer, Mark Bingham, Tom Burnett and Jeremy Glick, four passengers who lost their lives September 11 on United Flight 93 (2002); Pat and Kevin Tillman (2003); Liberian-born soccer legend George Weah (2004); disabled athletes Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah and Jim MacLaren (2005); Afghan female athletes (2006); and Trevor Ringland and Dave Cullen for their work with PeacePlayers (2007); U.S. Olympians Tommie Smith and John Carlos (2008); former president Nelson Mandela (2009);  the Thomas family of Parkersburg, IA (2010); boxer Dewey Bozella (2011); women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt (2012); Robin Roberts (2013), Michael Sam (2014), Caitlyn Jenner (2015), Zaevion Dobson (2016).

RACHEL LINDSAY BEGINS HER SEARCH FOR THAT ONE SPECIAL MAN WHEN ‘THE BACHELORETTE’ PREMIERES MONDAY, MAY 22, ON ABC

May 17, 2017 by · Leave a Comment

What do a professional wrestler by day and a doting dad by night, a chiropractor with magic hands, a secret admirer who has had a crush since early childhood days, a charmer who wanted to go to Las Vegas and immediately get married and a startup recruiter who had a memorable introduction with an unforgettable opening line have in common? They’re all on the hunt for Rachel Lindsay when the 13th edition of ABC’s popular romance reality series “The Bachelorette” premieres on MONDAY, MAY 22, at a special time (9:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network.

Editors’ note: “The Bachelorette” will return to its regular time slot on Monday, May 29 (8:00-10:01 p.m. EDT).

A luminous enthusiastic Bachelorette braces herself for the experience of a lifetime and the possibility of finding her Prince Charming. The memorable first meetings begin with Brady, a male model who hauls out a sledgehammer to “break the ice” and get acquainted. Matt, a construction sales rep, attempts to endear himself to Rachel by wearing a penguin costume. Blake E., one of the men who received an early introduction on the “After the Final Rose” show, doesn’t want to waste his second chance. The aspiring drummer, not to be outdone, brings along a marching band to stir things up.

Inside the mansion, the men continue to try and captivate Rachel. Josiah, a fellow attorney, pulls her away for the first one-one-one conversation. He discusses his troubled past and how it changed the course of his life. Fred, who went to elementary school with Rachel, brings a yearbook and admits to a lifelong fascination with his former classmate. Adam arrives with a surprise friend – an identical dummy named “A.J.” – much to Rachel’s delight. Bryan comes on strong, captivating the Bachelorette and literally sweeping her off her feet. But as passion flourishes, so do the confrontations between the bachelors: Blake E. challenges Lucas about whether he is there for the “right reasons.”

Kenny, a single dad, moves Rachel with her devotion to his daughter. Many relationships look promising as Rachel continues to familiarize herself with the men, but there is only one first impression rose. The Bachelorette follows her best instincts in choosing who should get her first rose.

The apprehensive men have to hope they are among the 23 left to move into the mansion and continue in the race for Rachel’s heart.

Rachel’s 31 suitors are:
Adam, 27, a real estate agent from Dallas, TX
Alex, 28, an information systems supervisor from Grosse Pointe Park, MI
Anthony, 26, an education software manager from Chicago, IL
Blake E., 31, an aspiring drummer from Marina del Rey, CA

The Bachelorette Fantasy League, the official ultimate fantasy game experience from ABC and sister company ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports and fantasy gaming, will be live today at 3 p.m. PDT at ABC.com/BFL and the ESPN Fantasy App.  The league – which is presented this season by Universal Pictures’ “Girls Trip” – allows players to challenge their family, friends and #BachelorNation in predicting the final four men, the one who will receive the final rose on “The Bachelorette,” and play along weekly for chances to win the grand-prize trip for two to Los Angeles for the taping of “The Bachelor: After The Final Rose” in 2018.

ABC Celebrates Valentine’s Day With Themed Specials and New Episodes

January 27, 2017 by · Leave a Comment

OVE IS IN THE AIR WHEN ABC CELEBRATES VALENTINE’S DAY

Love is all around when classic Charlie Brown specials, ABC’s comedies, “General Hospital” and “The Chew” celebrate the most romantic time of the year, Valentine’s Day. Below are highlights of specials and episodes scheduled for February.  All times are EST:

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3
“ Dr. Ken” “A Dr. Ken Valentine’s Day” – Ken lets Allison, who is second-guessing her decision to have a low-key Valentine’s Day, think that a love poem Dave wrote for his sweetheart, Emily (guest star Zooey Jeong, Ken Joeng’s real-life daughter), is meant for her. Meanwhile, Molly and Jae consider Valentine’s Day a corporate concoction; Clark plans a romantic scavenger hunt to lead Connor to his present; and complications arise when Damona and Eric have dinner at a restaurant that she and Pat once frequented when they were dating. (8:31-9:00 p.m.)

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8
“The Goldbergs” “Agassi” – Adam feels like he’s losing his best friend, Chad, so he attempts to join the tennis team. When Chad picks Dave Kim as his partner, Adam vows to take him down with Barry in a tennis match, channeling Andre Agassi. Meanwhile, with the help of Beverly, Erica deals with her post-break up depression just in time for Valentine’s Day. (8:00–8:30 p.m.)

“Speechless” “V-A-L—VALENTINE’S D-A–DAY” – Maya attempts to give Jimmy a Valentine’s Day gift, with the help of his old roommate and her ex-fiancé (guest star Ken Marino as Ethan). Ray is elated to find out he has a secret admirer, but will he learn the truth of who it is?  Meanwhile, JJ is in charge of distributing candy-grams, which proves challenging for both he and Kenneth. (8:30-9:00 p.m.)

“Modern Family” “Do You Believe in Magic?” – Fearful that the romance between him and Claire is fizzling, Phil calls upon his alter ego, Clive Bixby, to get Valentine’s Day back on track. Jay shows a bit of child favoritism when he and Gloria must deal with Joe’s inappropriate Valentine gift-giving and Manny’s dating indecisiveness. When Cam and Mitch empower Lily, Haley and Sal (Elizabeth Banks) to stand up for themselves to the men in their lives, things don’t turn out quite as planned and in fact go a little overboard. Alex discovers she has a secret admirer who may be a little too involved with the family. Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks guest star.  (9:00-9:31 p.m.)

“black-ish” “The Name Game” – Dre and Bow have a gender reveal party, and Dre is thrilled because it’s his turn to name the baby. He decides on a culturally significant name that Bow and Ruby aren’t a fan of. Meanwhile, Zoey’s plan to have an anti-Valentine’s Day with her friend Shelly is thwarted when Junior asks Shelly out on a date, so Diane tries to fill in as Zoey’s BFF. (9:31-10:00 p.m.)

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10
“Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown,” the 1975 special produced and animated by the same team that gave us the now classic holiday specials and taken directly from the late cartoonist Charles M. Schulz’s famed comic strip, will air with the classic “A Charlie Brown Valentine.”  In “Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown,” hearts are fluttering on Valentine’s Day at Birchwood School, and Linus has brought a huge box of candy for his homeroom teacher. Thinking that the candy is for her, Sally reciprocates with a homemade card for Linus. Meanwhile, Lucy demands some affection from Schroeder, and Charlie Brown waits for his cards in the mail… and waits… and waits. In “A Charlie Brown Valentine,” Charlie Brown finally works up the courage to call the little red-haired girl to ask her to the Valentine’s Day dance. But once again he ends up broken-hearted and empty-handed when he dials the wrong number and reaches Peppermint Patty instead. (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 13
“General Hospital” – On “General Hospital,” love is in the air in Port Charles as Kiki and Dillon make another attempt at a romantic first date.  Meanwhile, Anna seizes an opportunity to put one over on Valentin, and the custody battle clouds Valentine’s Day plans for Lulu, Dante, Maxie and Nathan. (2:00-3:00 p.m.)

 TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14
“The Chew”“The Chew” has a Valentine to its viewers with sumptuous recipes for your sweetheart that won’t break the bank and will have your taste buds swooning. (1:00-2:00 p.m. EST/check local listings)

“American Housewife” “Time For Love” – Katie’s least favorite holiday is Valentine’s Day, but her desire for a low-key approach is overridden by Greg’s over-the-top romantic gestures.  Meanwhile Oliver has an expensive gift for the girl he’s crushing on, and Taylor tries to put one over on her parents in order to attend a Valentine’s Day party. (8:30-9:00 p.m.)

“Fresh Off the Boat” “Neighbors with Attitude” – Jessica is disappointed to learn that she is excluded from the Neighborhood Watch, because she has the reputation of not being a team player.  But when Ann’s son goes missing, Jessica proves that her independent security measures work better than everyone else’s.  Meanwhile, Eddie sets the stage for the perfect first kiss with Alison, on a special Valentine’s Day-themed episode. Courtney Thorne-Smith (“Melrose Place”) guest stars as Ann. (9:00–9:30 p.m.).

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28
“The Real O’Neals”“The Real Heartbreak” – Devastated by his break-up with Brett, Kenny tags along with Pat and Jimmy to a Lonely Hearts happy hour, but when they try to use Kenny’s sadness to get attention from single ladies, Kenny inadvertently steals the show. Meanwhile, Eileen shuns the usual Valentine’s Day traditions until a chance encounter changes her mind (9:30–10:00 p.m.)
