  3. Making of

Starring Maki Goto

I can easily remember Maki Goto when she first appeared on a Japanese variety show called ASAYAN and her audition to become the next member of female idol group Morning Musume.  This was back in the late 90′s and she quickly became a popular member.

She had quite a bit of spunk with her blonde hair and was on the group’s “Love Machine” music video.  But what was more shocking about Maki was to find out that she was only 14 at the time.  Even surprising SMAP’s Takuya Kimura during the group’s appearance on the variety show “SMAPxSMAP” and needless to say, it was quite evident that when Maki grew older, there would be no surprise that she’s going to grow up to a beautiful woman.

In 2006, at the age of 21, no longer a member of Morning Musume but now a solo artist, Maki Goto showed off a sexsual side of her through the DVD single “SOME BOYS! TOUCH”.

Unlike other labels which tend to sell their music videos on DVD with a CD single release, PICCOLO TOWN has released Maki Goto’s DVD’s and CD singles separately unless you were a lucky person who pre-ordered and were able to snag a Limited Edition version with both the CD and DVD.

The music video features a sexy music video for her 16th single “SOME BOYS! TOUCH” and features Goto Maki showing off sexy choreography with her backup dancers or strutting her sexiness on the floor.  Suffice to say, this is the sexiest music video to feature Maki.   From suggestive dance choreography, cleavage shots and sexy photos, Maki Goto fans will no doubt enjoy this music video.

The second DVD track features primarily the choreography footage from the main music video with Maki Goto and her two background dancers.

The third DVD track features the making of the music video and photography session for the CD and DVD single.  Maki going through her images on an iMac and practicing the choreography with her dancers.  But most of all, how calm she is during her choreography and photo shoot.

The DVD insert features the lyrics to “SOME BOYS! TOUCH” and production credits.

Overall, this is an awesome DVD single release if you are a big fan of Maki Goto’s music.  The music video for “SOME BOYS! TOUCH” is red hot and for those who watched this artist grow for Morning Musume as a teenager and now a woman, will definitely have their eyes open wide when they watch her music video.

DVD REVIEW:

I admit that I don’t really know too much about The Corrs. I’m a late fan and this started with their performance of “Breathless”. I just fell in love with their music and also loved watching the lead singer that I couldn’t wait to purchase their first DVD with their music from their first two albums.

Anyway, the video is nice and clear and the audio sounds great via Digital 5.1. Unfortunately, there are no special features aside from discography and the menu selections. I wish their were angle selections or music videos but this is from 1998 and not many special DVD’s were out at that time, so I forgive this DVD. Anyway, it’s still better than the VHS version because it does take advantage of Digital 5.1 and thus you will feel like you have a front row seat.

You’ll even enjoy the special guest – Mick Fleetwood as he performs three songs with the family quartet. Especially a Corrs version of “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac.

Many people consider The Corrs the best band to come from Ireland since U2 (what about the Cranberries?)

Anyway, after watching this DVD, I like their music even more and can’t wait to purchase their CD’s or wait for their DVD audio release of their third album.

Based on a true story, Jim Carrey stunningly portrays the late Andy Kaufman-considered the most innovative, eccentric and enigmatic comic of his time-in Man on the Moon.  “Jim Carrey is extraordinary,” says the New York Post.  “Jim Carrey may be a better Andy Kaufman than Andy Kaufman” writes Newsweek.  Also starring Danny DeVito as Kaufman’s manager, Courtney Love as the woman Andy falls in love with and Paul Giamatti as his best friend.  You’ll stand up and cheer for Carrey in one of the year’s most entertaining movies.

DVD REVIEW:

I grew up watching “Taxi” and my memories of Andy Kaufman is not so clear though. I recall a comedy special of his being heckled on one special on cable way back when and now I wonder if that was a true heckler or his partner? After watching this movie and getting to see how Andy Kaufman really is…all I can say is…whoah! The dude was intense! There is more about him on the spotlight section, so make sure you watch that after the movie. The comments from Danny DeVito is very interesting. Cheese and onions…gag!

Jim Carrey is absolutely stunning in this movie.  My gosh, he could be Andy’s twin brother.  Even Andy’s closest friends say that he acted exactly like Andy and that shows his talent as an actor.

The movie is very entertaining and the colors are very nice, so no problems with video and no artifact problems.  Now as for the audio, I give “Man on the Moon” an A+ because Universal did fans a service by including the DTS version of the audio track with this movie.  Most companies have a separate DTS version sold with hardly any extras and Universal continues what they did with “Bowfinger” and made this DVD with a DTS and Dolby Digital version on the same DVD.   Also, they put a number of good extras such as the spotlight on location, deleted scenes and the two R.E.M. music videos and more.

This movie is very entertaining and it’s one of the best Jim Carrey well-acted movies out there.  This  DVD is highly recommended.

KNOWN DVD SECRET(S):

Hidden Audio Clip

At the main menu scroll down to Schematic Overview and click on it. Then press the right arrow button on your remote 5 times. Now select the color bars box by pressing down on your remote. As you watch the color bars you’ll hear a funny audio clip with Spike Johnz. Works on either dvd.

You probably read about this DVD on Entertainment Weekly or any DVD review magazine.  This DVD will perhaps be the reference DVD for how music video anthologies should be like.  If all music video DVD’s follow this pattern of multiple versions of the videos (sometimes camera angles or different cuts from the music video) to the added mix and a capella versions of the song, we would be in heaven.

For example:  You just have to see the boys invade Tokyo in the music video Intergalactic.  There are 9 versions of the Intergalactic Video on the DVD and about 6 or more versions of the song.  You can control it via your angle button and
your audio button.

What’s a trip is to see the Beastie Boys and director Nathanial Hornblower (rumored to be actor & director Spike Jonze – “Three Kings”, “Being John Malkovich”) just walk into Shinjuku station and have fun.  Walk to the government center in Shinjuku and have fun.  Walk in the subways and have
fun.  Walk in the shopping districts of Shinjuku.  It’s just so awesome to watch all these versions and that’s why this DVD is catching on as a must-buy DVD (for Beastie Boys fans) because this collection comes with two DVD’s with 18 music videos.  Almost all videos have three or more versions of the music video and the regular plus, a capella and different versions of the remixes are available for that video.   This DVD has the Intergalactic Robot vs. Octopus monster saga,  Sabotage, choice of 5.1 surround-sound mixes, video quality is awesome and commentary , interviews and more.

Anyway, back to “Intergalactic”…I just laugh how they enter the subways and for those who been on the subways in Tokyo you know that mostly everyone keeps to themselves and seldom do you see people talking (well, aside from Shibuya eki and the young people and the drunk bums who just yell from time to time) and they are just like sitting statues.  You see the Beastie Boys in their weird getup doing their dance movements and weird stuff and yet the people are just sitting there, not looking.  Now, in the Shinjuku station, it’s funny because the whole Japanese crowd did not go to the ticket gates until the Beastie Boys passed through…. They waited.  Hmm…not sure if they could of pulled this off in Osaka.

Everything is so “all good” with this DVD but one missing thing are the Def Jam songs (the songs that made them popular in the mid 80′s).  This is the only reason why I scored them an “A” instead of an A+.

This is a must-buy DVD for Beastie Boys fans and also it’s cheap – $24.00.  I have no idea how long this DVD is but BUY IT!!!
