RATED: M for Mature

Available on February 5, 2o13

The ancient struggle of the gods comes to an epic conclusion as Susano is reborn and the sun goddess Amaterasu awakens within Maya. What does Mitsuomi stand to gain by facing down Susano? How will Masataka endure his greatest challenge?

As Soichiro absorbs tremendous amounts of ki, what role will he play in this last great fight? And can Maya withstand the agony of her transformation and see her friends through to the end of the battle? All fates will be revealed in this final volume of Tenjo Tenge!

For 10 years, mangaka Oh!Great has developed a story about fighters from powerful families who have inherited a curse or an ability that has been passed down from generation to generation.

And for Souchiro Nagi, he now has been transformed to an evil being, but the conscious side of him is hoping someone can defeat him so no one is killed. Meanwhile, his deceased father has been waiting for this moment as he can use Souchiro’s new transformed state as a vessel to make Susano-o reborn and to destroy all humanity.

The first person to take on Souchiro’s new state is Mitsuomi.  While very powerful, unfortunately he can only keep at a certain power level for only a few minutes without stressing out his heart and killing himself.

While Makiko gathers all the ki with the Dragon Fist, instead of killing her son Souchiro, she decides to channel it into the Magatama chakra of Maya and bring her back to life.

And now only one person is left to take on Susano-o and that is Masataka Takayanagi.

With this final volume of “Tenjo Tenge”, we get a glimpse of the past, the present and the future of the characters we have followed for so many volumes.

Find out how the final battle ends in Oh!Great’s action-packed manga series “Tenjo Tenge: Full Contact Edition 2-in-1 Vol. 11”.

What is “Tenjo Tenge”?

In 1998, the mangaka known as “Oh!Great” (known for his manga and video game work and creating series such as “Air Gear”, “Burn-Up W” and “Burn Up Excess”) released his manga series “Tenjo Tenge” which would go on for 22 volumes before ending the manga series in 2010.

The manga would later be adapted into a 26-episode TV anime series in 2004, a two-episode OVA in 2005, followed by a film in 2006.

And while the manga series was released in the United States by CMX, the manga was heavily censored for its sexual content. But now the manga has been licensed and released via Viz’s Viz Signature featuring their “Tenjo Tenge: Full Contact Edition 2-in-1” series (featuring two graphic novels per volume) and featured in all of its uncensored glory. Sex, violence, it’s all there!

The series once revolved around a group of friends who attend Todou Academy, an academy that hosts the best fighters in the area. A few of these friends belong to families which are among the six Red Feather families.

Bad boys Souichiro Nagi and his friend Bob Makihara are attending their first day at the Todou Academy and learn that their fighting skills used at other schools, will definitely be put into great use as everyone in the school can fight. But the two will need to join a fight club.

But the most powerful club at the school is the Katana Group headed by Shin Natsume, the president of the Executive Council who has the power of the dragon eyes, but is slowly starting to lose his composure and becoming insane the more he uses them.

Shin has a busty sister named Maya (who has the ability to shrink herself to an 8-year-old) and also a busty younger sister named Aya (who also possessed the dragon eyes, but allows her to see the past, present and future and see and listen to the dead). For some reason, Shin and Maya have this bond, in fact…a bond that suggests that Shin may be in love with his sister.

But with Shin most of the time is his busty girlfriend Mana Kuzunoha, a girl who was assigned to be Shin’s girlfriend in order for her to collect data for the Takayanagi family. She is also responsible for helping Shin start the Katana group. Despite how insane Shin is, she finds herself falling for him.

But as Shin’s jealousy for his sister Maya becoming close with Mitsuomi Takayanagi, it led to his death.

But unfortunately, for Mitsuomi, the awesome power and strength soon got to his head which led to the deaths of many crime families and now many under the power of Mitsuomi. And Mitsuomi is wanting the Reiki sword that belongs to the Natsume family.

Meanwhile, the Jyuken Club is now ran by Maya, along with her sister Aya and her boyfriend Souichiro, Souichiro’s best friend Bob Makihara, Kagesada Sugano and Masataka Takayanagi (Mitsuomi’s younger brother).

In “Tenjo Tenge” Vol.5 and 6, the group fought Sohaku Kago’s group known as F (the new leaders of the 12 Founding Families), but in the process, a few were severely injured, while Souchiro Nagi was kidnapped.

“Tenjo Tenge” Vol. 7 focuses on Maya trying to recuperate from her injuries and broken arm with hopes that she can end the hundred-year war. As Maya goes out to search for Souchiro, Souchiro is being kept under the watchful eye of the Red Feather Faction leader, Sohaku Kago and being pitted against other warriors in hopes that Souchiro will take the first step into metamorphosis into the Black Dragon.

Meawhile, Tessen Ishiyumi, head of the Ishiyumi family has gone crazy since Souichiro sealed Tessen’s “Dragon Gate” and disabling his chakra. Now, he has become a madman and wants revenge against those who have made fun of him for losing his power, including Katsumi Kabato, head of the Kabuto family.

The second half of the storyline features Mitsuomi and Madoka Mawari teaming up with Maya and Souchiro (along with the help of Shizura Kamura) to enter the Forbidden Souls Echoes Gate go against Sohaku Kago (head of the Kago family and true leader of F, and also the father of Souchiro Nagi) and his most trusted subordinate, Tetsuhito Kagiroi.

Volume 7 also reveals the history of Soichiro’s mother Makiko Nagi and his father Sohaku Kago. We learn of why Makiko has lost her arm and what Sohaku had done to her. Meanwhile, Maya and Tetsuhito Kagiroi fight to the death.

With volume 8, Maya succumbs to her injuries against Tetsuhito. With the Dragon Eyes from afar, Maya witnesses her sister’s possible death. Fearing for the worse for her sister and her love for Souchiro, Maya needs to make sense of all this fighting. Until she is taken to the past to learn about Sohaku Kogo and what he was trying to accomplish then and what he is trying to accomplish now. Many secrets are revealed in this latest volume, including how one can be alive for centuries.

And with volume 9, Todo High’s tournament battle for which club will become “Executive Council” begins! With the Juken Club down to a few members due to injuries or tragedy, will they even have a chance this year?

And volume 10, leads us to the battle for the “Executive Council” and as Mitsuomi tries to fight for dominance and others hoping to defeat him, the Red Wing feather clan plans to bring a rebirth of three gods who were born to fight against death. Ama-Terasu, Susano-o and Tsuk-yomi.

And volume 11 is the final conclusion.  The battle to end Susano-o, where we see the rebirth of Maya, the final battle of the “Executive Council” and Masataka Takayanagi making the decision to fight Susano-o all by himself.

Who will live?  Who will die?  And will this battle that has gone on for centuries come to an end?

For ten years, Oh!Great has created a manga series full of action, full of sex and it was one of the most violent fighting manga series I have read.

But while the series started out about a group of high schoolers that were part of a martial arts club or group at high school trying to be #1, so they would gain control of the school, Oh!Great introduced a complex story about how these powerful friends were part of families with a longstanding history.

But even more complex was seeing how these families carried secrets for many generations of good vs. evil and the evil side trying to have Susano-o reborn in order for evil to take reign and literally destroy humanity.

And now, this evil who has been looking for a powerful vessel has found that one person they can utilize and that is Souchiro Nagi. While a brash teen who loves to fight, he was one that cared about his friends and his mother but yet, his deceased father who has somehow been able to pull strengths in the afterlife, has been waiting for the opportunity to use his son in order to bring out Susano-o.

And everything has led up to this final battle featured in “Tenjo Tenge: Full Contact Edition 2-in-1 Vol. 11”.

And while this long journey and reading about these characters has been exciting, its growing complexity of the past and its use of characters tend to become more confusing as the story went on.

The beginning would kick off with Bob and Souchiro, but then all of a sudden, the series would shift and focus on the rivalry and love between Maya Natsume and Mitsuomi and the jealousy carried by Shin Natsume for Mitsuomi getting close to his sister.  And as the storyline would focus on these individuals, the story would shift back to the junior members of Bob and Souchiro and Maya’s sister.

We have see the Dragon Eyes show what happened in the past and characters we read about, such as good-nature powerful fighter Mitsuomi now becoming a non-caring baddie.

Suffice to say, the nature of this manga series was unpredictable because people you read and followed who you thought were good, would later turn bad.

Souchiro Nagi, a powerful individual who fought for justice and was the protagonist was captured and now being used as the ultimate evil bad guy.

So, many twists and turns and then by volume 10, a person who was usually seen as the horny teen, ends up becoming the main protagonist who would be taking on Susano-o.

Suffice to say, this is one of the most chaotic and action-packed manga series I have read, but also one that is complex that you don’t want to miss a volume, otherwise, you’ll be lost.  There are so many characters featured that one volume, they are the primary protagonist and then later down the line, they become the antagonist.  And I suppose the fact that Oh!Great wants the reader to be on the edge of their seat and not knowing what to predict is a positive thing about this manga.  But it’s also the most maddening when you hope that protagonists that you would like to see in the final battle end up dead or end up being bad themselves.

Suffice to say, if you are a “Tenjo Tenge” fan, vol. 11 goes all out in fast action but not as much sexuality as in past volumes.  Where Oh!Great started out by featuring a lot of nudity and sex, while there are characters who are featured nude in this final volume, there is no intercourse or any sexual situations that happened in past volumes.  So, perhaps that shows the maturation that Oh!Great had underwent while creating the series within that ten year period.

Overall, “Tenjo Tenge” is a pretty awesome manga series that will attract fans who love fight club storylines, especially fighting video games such as “King of Fighters”, “Rival Schools”. There is plenty of action and teenage angst in this manga series but obviously targeted to male readers as the women happen to be overly well-endowed, appear to enjoy being bra-less, wearing short skirts to expose their panties and often having sex with a few of the male characters.

Oh! Great’s artwork for “Tenjo Tenge” is beautiful, well-detailed and he puts so much into each page of his manga series. I’m quite impressed. Most fighting manga tend to not focus on the story, if anything, they tend to rely on the characters (especially if they are based on a popular video game series).

In the case of the final chapters of “Tenjo Tenge”, it has become a complex series with a lot of characters, but you feel that with each volume, you’re getting your money’s worth. Very good character development but you have to stay with it and maybe even have to reread past chapters to figure out what you have missed.

Overall, for a mature action-driven, fighting manga series, “Tenjo Tenge” is one of the craziest manga series I have ever read and the conclusion was somewhat satisfying but even Oh!Great ends with how he probably could have gone for another ten years with another related storyline featuring two of the characters.

If you are looking for a mature fighting, all-action manga series with a lot of sex and violence, “Tenjo Tenge: Full Contact Edition 2-in-1” is for you!
