THE ALCHEMIST TO RELEASE “RUSSIAN ROULETTE” ON DECON JULY 17TH

May 21, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

30-TRACK, NON-STOP BEAT/RAP COLLAGE TO FEATURE SCHOOLBOY Q, ACTION BRONSON, MR. MUTHAFUCKIN’ EXQUIRE, DANNY BROWN, ROC MARCIANO, AND MANY MORE

Heavy lidded, conceptual ambition personified, Los Angeles producer The Alchemist has announced his next project, Russian Roulette, dropping on record label/production house/idea shop Decon on July 17th. A collection of 30 tracks woven into a tapestry of insanely obscure samples and jaw-dropping verses from the top names of indie-rap’s recent resurgence (Danny Brown, Schoolboy Q, Action Bronson, Evidence, Roc Marciano, Mr. Motherfuckin’ eXquire,  Boldy James, and more) The Alchemist creates a cinematic musical experience interwoven through a continuous soundscape demonstrating the vast array of his musical palette.

The latest notch in the belt of one of rap music’s most prolific enablers, Russian Roulette is the third official release this year from the producer responsible for hits from Rick Ross, Eminem, Mobb Deep, and myriad others. Gangrene, his collaborative project with Oh No, generated critical praise in January for Vodka & Ayahuaska, their grimy, prismatic shroom-bap opus, and his ongoing Rapper’s Best Friend series continues to serve instrumentals to aspiring spitters regularly. Not content with merely placing beats on records by rap’s elite and remaining in the shadows, 2012 is proving to be the year that The Alchemist is separating himself from the crowded pack of beat smiths.

MASTERWORKS BROADWAY is pleased to announce the release of the complete New Broadway Cast Recording of Evita, the first complete English language stage recording of the show since the original 1979 Broadway cast album.   The two-CD set, produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Nigel Wright, with Tim Rice as Executive Producer, will be released on June 26, 2012. Visit MasterworksBroadway.com for more information as it develops.

Scott Sanders, Co-Producer of the Broadway production, says: “The all new Broadway production of EVITA is already a huge hit.  There is a genuine hunger from our audience members – expressed at the theatre merchandise stands, on the show’s website and through its social media outlets – for us to deliver a complete recording of this beloved show and its score. We’re proud and excited to partner with Masterworks Broadway to release an historic two-CD event recording of Evita.”

Producers Hal Luftig and Scott Sanders present the first new production of the seven-time Tony Award-winning Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical EVITA, since it debuted on Broadway over 30 years ago. The production stars Grammy-winning international pop icon Ricky Martin as Che, Olivier Award-winning Argentinean actress Elena Roger making her Broadway debut as Eva Perón—a role that earned her critical acclaim in the 2006 production in London‘s West End—and Tony Award-winner Michael Cerveris as Juan Perón. The cast also features Max von Essen as Magaldi and Rachel Potter as the Mistress. Directed by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Michael Grandage and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Rob Ashford, EVITA opened April 5, 2012 at The Marquis Theatre to rave reviews.
The creative team includes Tony Award-winning Scenic and Costume Designer Christopher Oram (Red), Tony Award-winning Lighting Designer Neil Austin (Red), Olivier Award-winning Sound Designer Mick Potter (Woman In White), Wig and Hair Designer Richard Mawbey (Frost/Nixon), Projection Designer Zachary Borovay (Rock of Ages), and Music Supervisor/Director Kristen Blodgette (The Phantom of the Opera), Orchestrations are by Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Cullen (Sunset Boulevard), and dance arrangements are by David Chase (Billy Elliot).

EVITA tells Eva Peron’s passionate and tragic story through Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most dazzling and beloved score, including “Don‘t Cry for Me Argentina,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” and “High Flying Adored,” together with “You Must Love Me,” the Oscar-winning hit from the film EVITA.

After researching the life of Eva Perón for many years, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber released EVITA in 1976 as a concept album with Julie Covington as Evita and it became a world-wide hit. Soon after, the production debuted on stage in London’s West End starring Elaine Paige and directed by Hal Prince. The production transferred to Broadway and opened in 1979 starring Patti LuPone, who went on to win one of the seven 1980 Tony Awards the show earned. A major 1996 film of the musical was made starring Madonna as Evita and Antonio Banderas as Ché. DANNY ELFMAN’S DARK SHADOWS ORIGINAL SCORE MAY 8

April 17, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Film Marks 14th Collaboration Between Composer Danny Elfman And Director Tim Burton

(April 17, 2012 – Los Angeles, CA) – WaterTower Music will release Dark Shadows – Original Score digitally and in stores on May 8, 2012. The album features original music by Grammy Award-winning and four-time Oscar®-nominated composer Danny Elfman, which is featured in director Tim Burton’s new gothic comedy Dark Shadows.

For more than 25 years, Burton and Elfman have collaborated on some of the cinema’s most beloved and recognizable films and soundtracks, including Big Fish, for which Elfman received an Oscar® nomination; Beetlejuice; Batman; Edward Scissorhands; Sleepy Hollow; Corpse Bride; and, more recently, Alice in Wonderland.

“Tim had some specific ideas about the music on Dark Shadows,” says Elfman. “I knew that the bigger dramatic scenes would be played in a rather grand theatrical manner, but the real treat was tapping into the retro pallet Tim had imagined. He wanted something that payed homage to both the original TV series and other ’70s horror genres as well. For that we kept it minimal, eerie, and atmospheric with only electronics and a few solo instruments carrying the melodies.”

Elfman has also received Oscar® nominations for his scores for Barry Sonnenfeld’s Men in Black, and Gus Van Sant’s Good Will Hunting and Milk. Movie audiences worldwide have also heard Danny Elfman’s unique sound and style in some 80 film scores, including Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man; Brian De Palma’s Mission: Impossible; Martin Brest’s Midnight Run; Jon Amiel’s Sommersby; the Hughes Brothers’ Dead Presidents; Rob Marshall’s Academy Award-winning Chicago; and Shawn Levy’s Real Steel.

In the year 1750, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin and the dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets.

Warner Bros. Pictures, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, presents an Infinitum Nihil/GK Films/Zanuck Company production, a Tim Burton Film Dark Shadows in theaters and IMAX on May 11, 2012. “Dark Shadows” stars Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Chloe Grace Moretz, Bella Heathcote and Gully McGrath.
The Dark Shadows — Original Score on WaterTower Music will be available digitally and in stores on May 8, 2012; and on the same date, WaterTower Music will also be releasing the Dark Shadows –Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, containing eleven songs from the film.

BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA TO SPOTLIGHT MEMORIAL PLAQUE IN HONOR OF THE MUSICIANS WHO DROWNED WHILE STILL PLAYING AS THE TITANIC WENT DOWN; TRIBUTE TO TAKE PLACE AT SYMPHONY HALL DURING PERFORMANCES APRIL 12-14

April 11, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

ON APRIL 26, 1912, BOSTON SYMPHONY WAS THE FIRST TO DO A MUSICAL TRIBUTE
IN HONOR OF THE LIVES LOST

In conjunction with this weekend’s commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, the Boston Symphony will spotlight a memorial plaque in honor of the musicians who drowned while still playing (famously alleged as “Nearer, My God, to Thee”); the BSO tribute will take place during performances at Symphony Hall April 12-14.  Boston philanthropist and arts patron Isabella Stewart Gardner, a close friend of BSO founder Henry Lee Higginson, was so moved by the story of the musicians who continued to play while the ship was sinking that she commissioned a marble plaque in their memory. Though the musicians were not members of the BSO—nor were any of them connected to Boston (all Europeans, they were employed through a company out of Liverpool)—the poignant plaque was hung in the main hallway of Symphony Hall, where it remains today, in honor of their bravery.  A press clipping from the Boston Post dated September 23, 1912, describes the plaque, and states that the donor preferred to remain anonymous. It wasn’t until many years later that her identity was revealed.

The BSO is also presumed to be the first institution to do a musical tribute honoring the lives lost (this fact was referred to in a news clipping a day after the tribute), which took place on April 26, 1912  (see program page here). The BSO performed the Funeral March from Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, Symphony No. 3, under the direction of Max Fiedler.

From April 12 through 14, the Boston Symphony will place flowers near the plaque, and a display case in the main hall of Symphony Hall will offer information about the installation of the plaque and the BSO’s musical tribute.

The full text of the plaque is:

In Memory of the Devoted Musicians

Wallace Henry Hartley, bandmaster
John Frederick Preston Clark
Percy Cornelius Taylor
John Wesley Woodward
W. Theodore Brailey
John Law Hume
George Krins
Roger Bricoux

LIZA MINNELLI’S LEGENDARY LIVE AT THE WINTER GARDEN CONCERT AVAILABLE FROM MASTERWORKS BROADWAY

March 19, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

CD and Digital Releases Available For The First Time

Masterworks Broadway releases Liza Minnelli’s historic concert album Legends Of Broadway: Liza Minnelli Live At The Winter Garden.  The long-awaited Live At The Winter Garden recording is derived from the original master engineered by Phil Ramone. The concert recording includes performances from Minnelli’s truly legendary Broadway show in January 1974 as well as three recently discovered live bonus tracks that were recorded but not included on the original LP, including Stevie Wonder’s “You and I” and standards “It Had to Be You” and “My Shining Hour.”

The recording will be available for purchase on CD and digital download exclusively via www.MasterworksBroadway.com April 3, 2012.  The album will be available from all retailers and digital service providers on May 8, 2012.

The story behind the recording is an interesting one.  The 27-year-old dynamo had sold out an entire month’s run of 24 concerts in 36 hours, setting a house record for the Winter Garden Theater.  The show itself, which opened on January 6, was simply titled Liza. The album Liza Minnelli Live At The Winter Garden was quickly released by Columbia Records in April, but had to be withdrawn from the market due to contractual conflicts over her performance of songs from the Cabaret film score, which were available on the then-current soundtrack album. Only pirated versions of the album have circulated since.  This is the first time that the entire show will come out on CD and digital release.

Like Cabaret, Liza was directed by Bob Fosse, who choreographed it with Ron Lewis. Marvin Hamlisch served as musical director, and the celebrated songwriting team of John Kander and Fred Ebb supplied Minnelli with new songs for the shows.

“The thing about doing a show like Liza is that every song means something,” Minnelli reflects. “Fred and John were so brilliant at building a show, plus I had Marvin, so we tried all kinds of different rundowns and finally came up with what you hear on the album, and thank God it worked! But you keep trying, and don’t get satisfied with anything but the best.”

She pauses, then concludes: “It brings back so many memories. I always feel like I’ve never done anything. It’s true! So to have this come out, and to be reminded of how it was and how it was received, it’s just lovely!”

The Liza shows marked a triumphant return to Broadway for Minnelli.  She was already a veteran of the Great White Way and had won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1965 for Flora the Red Menace.  These shows also followed a remarkable rush of career milestones including her Oscar in 1973 for her performance in Cabaret and her Emmy that year for her Liza With a Z TV special.

Opening night guests for Liza included her father Vincente Minnelli and sister Lorna Luft, Halston, Diane Von Furstenberg, Neil Simon, New York’s Mayor Abe Beame, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Dudley Moore, Kay Thompson, Ben Vereen and Kitty Carlisle Hart. The after-party was held at The Rainbow Grill in Rockefeller Center, and Minnelli was later rewarded with a Special Tony Award for “adding luster to the Broadway season.”

“It was thrilling,” Minnelli recalls. “I remember opening night with Bobby [Fosse] and Marvin [Hamlisch] and all the people I looked up to and went to because they were the best. And it was so exciting to go to that theater every night and walk through that stage door and up the stairs and see how excited everybody else was, because it really was a new thing to do a Broadway concert show.”

Minnelli would do similar concert show runs in New York at Radio City Music Hall and twice at Carnegie Hall.
