In a recent review for the Daily Yomiuri, Christoph Mark wrote, “Growing up in the mid-’80s, I was a huge fan of Robotech, a U.S. show comprising three Japanese series, including the popular Super-Dimensional Fortress Macross saga. At my local comic-book store, where you could buy fansubbed videos straight from Japan, there was no shortage of videos, posters and models of Gundam. Despite the easy access, the complex story was anything but accessible, and I instead chose to stick to my slightly more simple Robotech fascination.”
“It turns out to be quite ironic, as the original Gundam series was a similar story to my much-loved Robotech: It told the tale of a war-torn Earth and the refugees caught in the middle. Now, with so many Gundam series on the market and on television, it is difficult to know exactly where to start. To top it off, the original manga adaptation of the animated series–titled Gundam 0079–is fairly difficult to come by. Luckily, there is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, a retelling and minor reenvisioning of the original story. (Viz has also released a partial run of the series in English.)”
