In a recent review by Saori Kan for the Daily Yomiuri, Kan wrote, “There are many comics that have had an impact on Japan’s manga history, but I’m sure Riyoko Ikeda’s Berusaiyu no Bara (The Rose of Versailles) is the most influential comic for girls ever and one of the masterpieces of Japan’s manga history.”"Set in France before and during the French Revolution in 1789, the story mainly revolves around the lives of Queen Marie Antoinette and a fictional character, Oscar Francois de Jarjayes. Oscar, the sixth daughter born to a nobleman, was raised as a boy to become his successor as commander of the royal guards.”
“Berusaiyu no Bara, also known as Berubara, has all the elements it needs to appeal to girls–a life of royal luxury, beautiful characters, romance, unrequited love, conspiracies, tragedies–and long, gorgeous dresses more extravagant than anything we would ever have the chance to wear in our lifetime.”
“It is no surprise that the story has been adapted for a wide range of art forms, such as Takarazuka Revue Company’s musicals, an anime series (which has also been broadcast overseas), a French-Japanese live-action movie, a ballet and an Italian opera.”
