In a manga review of “Nemurenu Shinju” on Daily Yomiuri, Matsumaru Kumi wrote, “According to a club owner who is a close female friend of Sayoko, the protagonist of Nemurenu Shinju, there are two kinds of women: diamonds and pearls.”
“The woman says the former can find happiness easily because their “light shines outward just like a diamond,” clearly signalling their worth to men. She does not say whether women who “absorb light into themselves like a pearl” can become happy, too, but says there are few men who can understand the value of the pearls.”
“Sayoko is a 45-year-old artist who specializes in copperplate engraving. She likes her rather secluded life with her dog Paul in a house near the sea in Zushi, Kanagawa Prefecture. She occasionally sleeps with gallery owner Takuji, but she does not see her relationship with him–a married man who is also dating a twentysomething woman–as anything more than an arrangement based on sex.”
