Film Socialisme comes to Blu-ray and DVD with special features including trailers, a stills gallery, and a special essay about the film by Richard Brody, author of Everything is Cinema: The Working Life of Jean-Luc Godard, which puts the film in the context of Godard’s career. This edition is presented in its original multi-language soundtrack, with two subtitle options including Godard’s “Navajo” English from the theatrical version, and a full English translation of all of the film’s dialog. The first is set on a luxury cruise liner sailing the Mediterranean (with Patti Smith among its passengers), on which Godard examines the garishness of its wealthy passengers with the rich and troubled history of the ship’s ports of call.
The second part depicts the tension between the owners of a rural French rest stop, running for local office, and their children, who have their own ideas about the future. The third part is part-travelogue, part-history lesson, and part-essay, as Godard explores Western history at six different ports of call: Egypt, Hellas, Palestine, Odessa, Naples, and Barcelona, depicting images of art and conflict in order to examine the past and the future of Western civilization.
